"DM of the Rings" - Parts XXV to LVIII Quiz

Continuing the "DM of the Rings" campaign, we go through Loth-Lorien and emerge quite unhappy on the other side. Boromir gets flipped off, and the rest hurry off pursuing an obvious "quest hook" in Rohan.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Dungeon Master mistakenly has Galadriel speak someone else's lines. Whose lines were they supposed to be, originally?

Answer: Gandalf's

It's not uncommon for a Dungeon Master to get his scripts confused, and in this case he completely divulges Gandalf's fate at the Balrog encounter, long before it actually needs to be divulged. Fortunately, none of the players were actually listening! Saved by apathy!
2. The members of the Fellowship steal boats from the Elves to leave Lothlorien.

Answer: False

They initially propose to do so, ignoring the Dungeon Master's protests about the effort it took the Elves to build those boats. Eventually, he relents and has Celeborn give them the boats as gifts (averting the theft) along with Lembas bread for the journey. Sam even asks for some extra rope.

This is one of those few occasions where the group actually make decisions that would've been fine with the book's original plot, although their MOTIVES for this are always completely different from the motives of the book's characters, which makes the entire situation extremely awkward.
3. In their own words, how many battles have the Fellowship members won between the start of the campaign and the time they left Loth Lorien?

Answer: One

Although they've battled a large number of Goblins in Moria, managed to drive off the Ring-Wraiths, and successfully escaped both the Watcher in the Lake and the Balrog, the members of the Fellowship consider none of these as actual "victories", probably because they got no loot or "Experience Points" from any of those encounters.

Their only _perceived_ victory was getting rid of Gandalf (by abandoning him at the Bridge of Khazad-Dum to fight the Balrog alone). They comment that "Anyone can be a winner if their definition of victory is flexible enough"!
4. Where is Gollum killed?

Answer: On the River Anduin.

One of the most major differences between Lord of the Rings and its comical representation is the death of Gollum, who is shot by Legolas on the River Anduin. Legolas spots Gollum floating by on a log, and rolls a perfect hit for maximum damage, killing Gollum immediately (despite the Dungeon Master's protests).

He is subsequently written off from the campaign, which surprisingly really isn't going to change the story at all.
5. When Boromir is killed, what does his player choose to do?

Answer: Leave the game.

Frank's had enough. His pre-ordained death at the hands of, well, an INFINITE NUMBER OF ORCS has convinced him that the game is simply not worth playing (it's surprising he hasn't left earlier, not to mention everyone else). In his death, at least, he's free to do whatever he wants, which is probably what any sane player would've liked at this point.
6. What do all four hobbits leave the game to play?

Answer: Star Wars D&D

You can't really blame them for wanting to play something else. Their lame characters are being dragged on by the Dungeon Master, they get little or no reward from encounters, and they definitely have no free will with the story. Of course, it's also good that they're leaving because they are basically sniveling little idiots who couldn't be expected to roleplay if their lives depended on it. Fortunately for the Dungeon Master, they leave at a point where the plot can be rewritten to not include them at all!
7. What do the remaining members of the Fellowship do with Boromir's Body?

Answer: Nothing.

"Eager" to run off and rescue their hobbit "friends" (good riddance!), the three remaining characters (Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas) rush off to the south, completely forgetting to do anything with Boromir's dead body. He's left lying on the battlefield with all the dead orcs. Then again, no one really cares except the Dungeon Master, who's merely playing out his own fantasy here.
8. According to Eomer, he would've cut Gimli's head off if it was but a few feet higher off the ground.

Answer: False

That would be the movie interpretation. In the comic, Eomer says:

"I would cut off your head, Dwarf... But I don't want to have to look up the rules on mounted combat right now."

Another case of the players actually playing along with the plot, although for the wrongest of reasons. Gimli's comment to Eomer (which sparks this confrontation) is absolutely hilarious, but omitted here for reasons of adult content. ;)
9. After Eomer goes on and on about the terrible predicament he and his men are facing in Rohan, Legolas comments that "It sucks to be you". When asked to revise his words, Legolas instead says: "Hark, thy fate ______!"

Answer: Sucketh

This is by far one of the funniest lines in the entire comic, if not the funniest. Gimli is the only player-character who actually does anything that resembles "in-character" conversation, and even Gimli slips once in a while. In fact, in one of the earlier chapters of the comic, Aragorn is told to revise his combat taunts, so he turns to a Ring-Wraith and shouts the immortal words "Eat it... KNAVE!"
10. Against game rules, who quotes Monty Python when the Fellowship reaches Edoras?

Answer: The Dungeon Master

The Dungeon Master hates Monty Python quotations in the middle of a "serious" fantasy game, and so goes through an entire episode mentioning all of the quotes that he DOESN'T want to hear from any of the players. Of course, by doing so, he puts a wrench in his own gears, breaking the atmosphere single-handedly. Not that there was much atmosphere to begin with.
