Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the film "Gattaca" we hear several public address announcements in a made-up language that is used on a fairly large scale in real life. What is the name of this constructed language?

Answer: Esperanto

Esperanto was created in the 1800s by Dr. Ludwig Lazarus Zamenhof, in an effort to create a language bridge between different cultures.
Esperanto is not genealogically linked to any specific language and elements from French, Spanish, Dutch and a number of other languages make up phrases and words.
2. In the television series "A Game of Thrones" a number of different fictional languages are spoken. However, the language of the nobles and highly educated is spoken by a select few. What is this language that is used mostly in the continent of Essos?

Answer: High Valyrian

High Valyrian was created by linguist David Peterson from a few initial scraps written by George R.R. Martin, on whose "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels the series is based. In the novels and series the main form of communication is in "The Common Tongue", however in the cultured cities in the east High Valyrian and its derivative Astapori Valyrian is still spoken.
3. "The Fifth Element" is a fantasy film by Luc Besson in which future Earth is about to be destroyed by an immense evil. Our salvation comes in the form of a "Supreme Being" called Leeloo with the power to unite the elements. Which fictional language does she speak?

Answer: The Divine Language

The Divine Language is a completely fictional tongue created for the role of Leeloo and the priest that assists her by director Luc Besson and actress Milla Jovovich. Being a Supreme Being Leeloo does manage to learn English in a very short amount of time.
4. JRR Tolkien was known for constructing minute details in his books, resulting in a number of made-up languages. Which language created by Tolkien is commonly known as elf-tongue in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, and is one of the main dialects of Elvish?

Answer: Sindarin

JRR Tolkien created a universe of diverse cultures and the languages that these creatures would need to communicate. Sindarin is the language commonly used by the elves of Middle Earth.
The language is influenced by Welsh and Finnish, with a particular flowing style of writing.
5. A film with as many diverse characters as "Star Wars" is bound to have widely differing languages. In the film, Jabba the Hutt is a crime lord on the planet Tatooine. What fictional language does he speak?

Answer: Huttese

In the "Star Wars" film franchise, the Hutts are a race of slug-like creatures who control several criminal empires in the galaxy. Huttese is a language that was created for the films and is loosely based on the language Quechua. The language also contains several contorted English words, so if you listen very carefully you might be able to understand Huttese.
6. In the 1982 film "Blade Runner" some characters have developed a form of slang that is used as a form of communication on the streets. What is this made-up language called?

Answer: Cityspeak

The made-up language of Cityspeak was created by actor Edward James Olmos for the character of Gaff. It is a mash-up of Spanish, German, Japanese, Hungarian, French and Chinese.
In the movie it is used as a street language by the inhabitants of this world, and unlike some of the other languages in this quiz, is unique to this film.
7. The novel and subsequent film adaptations of Frank Herbert's classic novel "Dune" features a race of desert people that inhabit the planet Arrakis. Their language is named after the race of people who speak it. What is it called?

Answer: Fremen

The fictional planet Arrakis, also called Dune, is home to the Fremen people, who speak a made-up language named after their race. There are some similarities to Arabic and Gypsy Roma in the language, but is completely fictional and constructed for the series.
8. One of the biggest movies of 2009 was James Cameron's "Avatar". In the film the blue-skinned inhabitants of the moon Pandora have a unique language that is also named after said inhabitants. What is the name of these people and their invented language?

Answer: Na'vi

The Na'vi is a fictional race of humanoids that inhabit the moon Pandora, speaking the Na'vi language. The language was initially created by James Cameron but turned over to linguist Dr Paul Frommer, who managed to expand the Na'vi language to over 1500 words.
9. Returning to the continent of Essos in the series "Game of Thrones", this made-up language is spoken mostly by the barbarian tribes, or khalasars of the continent. What is the name of this language which is the same as the tribes for which it is named?

Answer: Dothraki

Dothraki, as with High Valyrian, was created by linguist David Peterson of the Language Creation Society to fit into the mythical world created by George R.R. Martin in his "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels.
Dothraki is available to learn online and has a vocabulary of over 3,000 words, with many fans already able to converse in the language.
10. "Star Trek" has led to the creation of perhaps the most famous fictional language in the history of TV and movies. What is this language called that is spoken by an alien race in the franchise, but has also had parts of the Bible translated to it?

Answer: Klingon

Klingon has become the fastest growing constructed language on the planet, surpassing even Esperanto and Sindarin. The language was initially created by actor James Doohan, who portrayed the role of Scotty in "Star Trek".
Marc Okrand, who was also responsible for the Vulcan language in the series, took over and expanded the language.
A number of books, including parts of the Bible, has since been translated into Klingon.
