Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is a mixture of two or more metals called?

Answer: alloy

When you mix two or more metals (elements) together, no matter what the metals are, the finished product is called an "alloy". The very first alloy that human beings ever used is called 'meteoric iron'. It's a naturally occurring alloy of nickel and iron that was first discovered in meteors which had hit the earth many years ago.
2. What would one call the fine silty area that forms at the mouth of a river?

Answer: a delta

This area is referred to as a "delta". It is triangle-shaped and acts like a catch basin for all the fine sand, silt, and sediment which has been carried down the river by the water currents and settles there.
3. What is a common term, or word, used for an adhesive?

Answer: glue

Dictionary.com defines "adhesive" as "a substance that causes something to adhere as glue or rubber cement". If you're anything like me, then you're very good at sticking your fingers together and making a mess wherever the glue should not be.
4. According to scientists, what is the temperature of the middle (core) of our Sun?

Answer: approximately twenty-seven million degrees Fahrenheit

The surface of our Sun is called the photosphere. The photosphere has a temperature of about 10,000° Fahrenheit. Yowch! The temperature at the Sun's core, or very middle, is about 27 million° Fahrenheit. Anything on our earth that managed to touch the core of the Sun would be immediately disintegrated so don't touch it!
5. What happens to a tree that is called "deciduous"? (pronounced: dee-sid-yoo-us)

Answer: each year the leaves fall off and it grows new ones next year

There are two main types of trees and they are called "deciduous " and "coniferous". Deciduous trees lose their leaves in the fall and new ones regrow in the spring. Coniferous trees as a group can adapt to drier and cooler environments. They are usually of the 'evergreen' type and often have leaves that are needle-shaped and drought resistant.

The trees do not lose their 'leaves' like the deciduous trees do. That's why they are referred to so often as "evergreen".
6. Phosphorus is needed for strong bones. But what other important mineral is needed by bones too?

Answer: calcium

Calcium is the best mineral to help humans build and maintain strong bones. It is also very important in keeping your teeth healthy and cavity-free. The best product for getting your calcium is milk, but it is also found in foods such as eggs and cheese.
7. What colour is a healthy human brain?

Answer: pinkish-beige

Although our brain often gets called "gray matter", its colour is much closer to pinkish-beige than gray. Your brain and spinal cord together make up your 'central nervous system'. The CNS controls everything in your body, but you can call your brain the "boss" of the human body.
8. What event gave Sir Isaac Newton the idea for his Law of Gravity?

Answer: an apple falling from a tree

There's a partially true story that says Isaac Newton was sitting under an apple tree when an apple fell on his head. The blow from the apple immediately caused him to think of the Universal Law of Gravitation. The true part is that Newton saw the apple fall and that's when he began to think about gravity.
9. What is the name of the body tissue that holds muscle to bone?

Answer: tendons

It is our tendons, also known as sinew (pronounced: sin-yoo), that hold muscles to our bones. Tendons are very strong, tough bands of fibrous tissue that keep muscles attached to our bones. They are capable of withstanding much stretching and tension.

They are a lot like ligaments as they are both made of a bodily substance called collagen. The big difference is that ligaments attach bone to bone rather than muscle to bone.
10. What's the name for the set of orders that tell a computer what it should do?

Answer: a program

I'd bet that if a tough drill sergeant told a computer what to do, it might listen! LOL Of course it's the "program" that tells a computer what it should do. A hyperdrive is a piece of electronic equipment that helps the computer work and the "Miranda Warning" is a set of rights that a U.S. policeman must read out loud if he/she is going to arrest a person.
