Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Often touted as the most dangerous breed of dragon, which of these did Harry face during the first task of the Triwizard Tournament?

Answer: Hungarian Horntail

In 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire', Hogwarts hosts the Triwizard Tournament, a series of contests held between one representative each from Hogwarts and the other magical schools of Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. As is the way for Harry Potter, he is mysteriously entered into the tournament as a fourth competitor despite not actually being eligible to take part.

The first task requires the champions to capture a golden egg from under the watchful eye of a dragon, with each facing a different breed. Harry draws the Hungarian Horntail, seemingly the most fearful of the four available options based on the way that everyone reacts. He uses a summoning charm to retrieve his Firebolt broom from the castle, allowing him to outmanoeuvre the Horntail and pick up the egg.
2. Known to feed on the local sheep population, which of these is an actual dragon of the Southern Hemisphere (in the world of 'Harry Potter')?

Answer: Antipodean Opaleye

As with many of the ten breeds of dragon catalogued in 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them', the Antipodean Opaleye doesn't actually feature in the central series of seven 'Harry Potter' books. The breed is named for its distinctive eyes, which don't contain a pupil and are multi-coloured and iridescent. Their favourite food is sheep, an animal found in abundance on the islands of New Zealand.

The photo shows a hobbit hole from the set of the 'Lord of the Rings' films, most of which were filmed in New Zealand.
3. Named for the flame it can produce, which word follows 'Chinese' in the dragon breed faced by Viktor Krum in 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'?

Answer: Fireball

Distinguished by its red scales and golden spikes above the eyes, the Chinese Fireball is the only dragon native to the continent of Asia. When faced with the Chinese Fireball during the first task of the Triwizard Tournament, Viktor Krum used a Conjunctivitis Curse to blind the animal, thus allowing him to grab the golden egg.

However, as the dragon couldn't see, it trampled some of its own eggs and Krum did not receive full points for the task.
4. From which South American country does the smallest dragon, the 'vipertooth', hail?

Answer: Peru

The only breed of dragon native to the entire Americas, the Peruvian Vipertooth is notable for the fact that it is both the smallest and fastest of the dragons in the 'Harry Potter' universe. The Vipertooth is said to have a particular penchant for human flesh, and efforts were taken to reduce numbers in the 19th Century after a population explosion.

The picture clue shows a stuffed toy of Paddington Bear, a fictional character who came to London from "deepest darkest Peru".
5. Which country, in which Charlie Weasley works for a large portion of the 'Harry Potter' books, is also home to the dragon breed known as the 'longhorn'?

Answer: Romania

In addition to the flames and sharp teeth possessed by all dragons, the Romanian Longhorn has a further weapon in its namesake feature. The horns are gold in colour, and can be used to impale prey before it is eaten. 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' describes the creation of a dragon reservation in Romania, created both to breed Longhorns and to study all breeds of dragons. It is assumed that it is at this reservation that the second oldest Weasley child, Charlie, works.

The photo clue shows Bran Castle, one of several Romanian castles that make the claim to be 'Dracula's Castle' from the classic novel by Bram Stoker.
6. Faced by Fleur Delacour in the Triwizard Tournament, the 'common green' breed of dragon is predominantly found in Ireland.

Answer: False

Perhaps the least frighteningly named dragon of those in the 'Harry Potter' universe, the Common Welsh Green is nevertheless a fearsome predator. 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' recounts the 'Ilfracombe Incident', in which a Common Welsh Green attacked a beach full of bathers in 1932. When facing the Welsh Green during the Triwizard Tournament, Fleur Delacour used a charm to put the dragon to sleep, thus allowing her to collect the egg.

The photo clue shows a pair of leeks, a national symbol of Wales since St. David ordered his troops to wear one in their helmets to distinguish friend from foe in battle.
7. The largest breed of dragon in the 'Harry Potter' universe hails from Ukraine, and is named for which of the following distinctive features?

Answer: Ironbelly

Often weighing in at over six tonnes, the Ukrainian Ironbelly is unsurprisingly cumbersome in flight. Based on the description given in 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows', most people have identified the dragon in the bowels of Gringotts to be a Ukrainian Ironbelly, though it is never explicitly mentioned in the book. 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' recounts the tale of an Ironbelly carrying off an entire sailing ship from the Black Sea in 1799.

The picture clue depicts a soldering iron, a device used to melt solder that can then be used to make connections in electrical circuits.
8. Which of the following breeds was Hagrid's pet Norbert, the first dragon to appear in the 'Harry Potter' books?

Answer: Norwegian Ridgeback

Featuring in 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone', the Norwegian Ridgeback is similar in appearance to the Hungarian Horntail. Hagrid's pet Norbert hatched from an egg that he suspiciously won in a pub, giving away more information than he should have in the meantime. Ridgebacks are notable for their aggression towards their own, perhaps the reason why they are one of the rarest of the ten breeds described in 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them'.

The picture clue shows a mountain ridge, an extended peak with a sharp drop on both sides.
9. The dragon faced by Cedric Diggory in 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' is named for its Swedish origin and its short...what?

Answer: Snout

Touted as one of the more attractive dragons in the 'Harry Potter' universe, the Swedish Short-Snout has silvery-blue skin and produces a bright blue flame. In the Triwizard Tournament in 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire', Cedric Diggory managed to distract the Swedish Short-Snout that he was facing by transfiguring a rock into a dog, allowing him to nab the egg.

The picture clue shows the nose of a pig, often referred to as the 'snout'.
10. The aggressive dragon breed known as the 'black' is named for which island group?

Answer: Hebrides

The Hebridean Black is named for the Hebrides island group in Scotland, and can be recognised by their brilliant purple eyes. According to 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them', the Hebridean Black is more aggressive than the Common Welsh Green, though their population is controlled by a clan of wizards and witches that live on the islands.

The picture clue shows a thistle, a national symbol of Scotland since the 18th Century, derived from a group of knights known as the Order of the Thistle.
