Norbert makes his first appearance in Book #1 of the Harry Potter series -"Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (1997). The dragon only appears in the first book but is mentioned in every book in the series with the exception of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince".

In the final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", readers find out that Norbert is actually a Norberta (a female dragon). Hagrid keeps the dragon egg warm over the fire and it hatches in front of Ron, Harry and Hermione. Norbert is described as looking like a "crumpled black umbrella." He has a long skinny body, stubby horns, large spiny wings and a wide snout.

The dragon also has bulbous orange eyes and a fierce venomous bite that actually sends Ron off to the infirmary. Hagrid feeds Norbert from a bucket filled with brandy and chicken blood as recommended by a book entitled "Dragon Breeding for Pleasure and Profit."

Answer: Norwegian Ridgeback

Norbert is identified as a Norwegian Ridgeback dragon. Norbert hatches from his egg in the home of Hagrid on the grounds of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry within the pages of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". Hagrid obtains the dragon egg from a disguised Professor Quirinus Quirrell, who exchanges the egg for information on how to get past Fluffy, the three-headed dog that is guarding the entrance to where the Philosopher's Stone is hidden. Harry, Ron, and Hermione persuade Hagrid to send Norbert to a colony in Romania because he is too dangerous to keep as a pet.

In the film, Norbert is shown to be affectionate rather than violent and it is Dumbledore who orders the dragon to be sent off to Romania.

Answer: Hungarian Horntail

In the 4th book of the series, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (2000), Harry is mysteriously entered for the Triwizard Tournament. In the first challenge he has to steal a golden egg that is protected by a ferocious Hungarian Horntail dragon. This dragon is believed to be the most ferocious of all dragons in the Harry Potter universe.

It has black scales, spikes, horns, can grow to over 50 feet in length, is exceptionally agile and breathes fire. It also has a loud piercing scream and can fly at very impressive speeds.

At the TriWizard Tournament, Harry calls upon his trusty Firebolt broomstick and uses his skills as a seeker to daringly outfly the dragon during the competition.

Answer: Swedish Short-Snout

Harry Potter finds out about the first challenge early and confides in Cedric Diggory that the challenge will involve dragons. Cedric is the first to go, and has to contend with the Swedish Short-Snout. He transfigures a rock into a labrador dog to distract the dragon.

At first it works, but then the dragon turns to pursue Cedric. Diggory escapes successfully with the egg but sustains burns to the side of his face. In the first task, Fleur Delacour of Beauxbatons competes against the Common Welsh Green, and Viktor Krum of Durmstrang contends with the Chinese Fireball.

Answer: Draco Malfoy

From the very start of the Harry Potter series, from the time they first meet in "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter become mortal enemies. Interestingly, Draco is named for the star constellation known as "The Dragon". Draco in Latin literally translates to be "dragon" or "serpent." Draco Malfoy is the son of Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy who are close allies to Lord Voldemort.

The family connection to the Deatheaters continues with Draco's aunt Bellatrix Lestrange. Draco is a member of Slytherin house and is accompanied throughout the series with his two henchmen, Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle. Draco Malfoy was originally given the name of Draco Spungen and then Draco Spinks in early drafts of the first book.

Answer: Hermione Granger

In "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", we meet for the first time Mr. Garrick Ollivander and his wand shop, Ollivanders. It is in the first book of the series that the differences between the different wands is explained. Hermione Granger originally possessed a wand that was 10 3/4 inches and made out of Vinewood. Alas, her wand was stolen by Snatchers toward the end of the series.

Hermione then came into possession of the wand owned by Bellatrix Lestrange. Interestingly, this wand was 12 3/4 inches and made of walnut, but also contained a dragon heartstring.

Hermione would use this wand in the final battle against the Deatheaters. Ron Weasley and Neville Longbottom both had wands that contained unicorn hair. Harry Potter, meanwhile had a wand that contained the feather of a phoenix.

Answer: Charlie Weasley

Charlie Weasley is the second oldest son of Arthur and Molly Weasley. At Hogwarts he was in Gryffindor and was Captain of the House Quidditch team. After graduating, he went on to study Romanian dragons. Charlie is also a member of the Order of the Phoenix and fights against the Deatheaters in the Battle of Hogwarts at the conclusion of Book 7.

Charlie Weasley is mentioned in the first three books: "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", and "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban". He appears in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" as the caretaker of the dragons that he has transported from Romania for the Triwizard Tournament. Charlie is again mentioned in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", and "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince". His last appearance comes at the end of the Battle of Hogwarts in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."

The Coat of Arms for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry depicts the house colors and mascots for each house. In the top right appears the Slytherin snake and the top left is the Gryffindor lion. In the bottom right is the Ravenclaw eagle and the bottom left the Hufflepuff badger. Beneath the shield is the school motto: "Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus", which literally translates to "A sleeping dragon is never to be tickled".

The translation of the Hogwarts motto does not feature in any of the books.

However, the coat of arms is found on the initial pages of almost all editions of each book.

Answer: Dragon Pox

Dragon Pox is mentioned in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". Dragon Pox is evidently a potentially fatal disease that can be contagious within the wizarding community. Symptoms are not unalike the chicken pox, except that the skin remains pocked with a permanent greenish tinge and sparks may or may not emit from the nose when the patient is sneezing.

In the final installment of Harry Potter, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", readers come face-to-face with an imposing dragon. On the Harry Potter Wiki website, the dragon's species is given as a Ukranian Ironbelly. However, the species of dragon is not noted in the book.

The massive, pale, white dragon was assigned to guarding the Lestrange Vault within the deep labyrinth of the Gringott's Bank. Hermione, Ron, and Harry had disguised themselves in order to gain entrance into the vault to search for a Horcrux.

The dragon was enormous, with spiked wings, milky pink eyes, and pale, scarred scales. Hermione freed the dragon from its restraints and the three young wizards blasted a tunnel for the dragon to escape. They emerged in the main foyer of the bank and then flew into the sky. Flying over a lake, the three friends jumped off the dragon's back when it swooped in to take a drink.
