Broccoli is a vegetable of the cabbage family of plants and is a good source of vitamin C and vitamin K. The top, dark green parts are called florets.
2. Brussels Sprouts
Brussels sprouts are small round vegetables that taste a bit like cabbage. The part that is eaten is the bud of the plant. They are called Brussels sprouts after the city of Brussels which is the capital city of the European country Belgium. They are called this because this is where they were first grown.
3. Peas
Peas are small, round vegetables which grow in cases called pods. Peas have been grown since ancient times, but the sweet tasting peas we have today were created in the 1700s in England.
4. Asparagus
Asparagus is a vegetable native to Europe and Asia. In Europe it is traditionally harvested in the spring time. Asparagus is a good source of many vitamins and nutrients and is also known for making people's urine smell funny after they have eaten it!
5. Cabbage
Cabbage is a general term for different types of vegetables of the brassica family. The one pictured here is called a Savoy cabbage and has green outer leaves with a white inside. There are also cabbages which are deep purple in colour called red cabbages.
6. Okra
Okra plants are native to East Africa and are also called lady's fingers in some countries. The part that is eaten is the seed pod. Fried okra is a dish associated with Southern US food.
7. Bell Pepper
Bell peppers (which are called capsicums in some parts of the world) are technically a fruit but are usually cooked as a vegetable. They are from the same family of plants as chili peppers but are not spicy. Bell peppers come in different colours, most commonly green, yellow, orange and red. Green peppers are usually unripe red peppers and are not as sweet in flavour as red peppers.
8. Cucumber
Cucumbers are technically fruits but are eaten like vegetables. They can be eaten raw, often featuring in salads, but can also be pickled. Cucumbers that are pickled are often smaller and are called gherkins.
9. Spinach
Spinach is a leafy, green vegetable originally from Asia. Spinach contains many vitamins and nutrients and is very high in vitamin K. The cartoon character 'Popeye' gets his strength from eating spinach.
10. Celery
Celery has been grown since ancient times; in fact, the English name 'celery' comes from an Ancient Greek word for the vegetable. Celery is a good source of vitamin K. Some people are allergic to celery and must avoid food containing it to avoid becoming unwell.
