Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During what seasonal holiday might people take part in a game of "apple bobbing"?

Answer: Halloween

'Apple Bobbing' is a game where people try to catch apples that are floating in a tub or bowl of water using only their mouth. It is traditionally associated with Halloween, but an annual apple bobbing competition is held in Baltimore MD during the first weekend of July.
2. Which of these American cities is nicknamed "The Big Apple"?

Answer: New York

People disagree about where New York first got this nickname. It was made popular by John J. Fitz Gerald, writing for the "New York Morning Telegraph" in the 1920s.

Some nicknames for the other cities listed are:
Chicago - "The Windy City",
San Francisco - "The City By The Bay"
Atlanta is nicknamed: "The Big Peach".
3. Which of these choices below was known as the "love apple" when it was first introduced to Europe?

Answer: Tomato

Historically, all foreign fruit could be known by the word apple, even including some nuts. Tomatoes were called 'love apples'.

In France, the potato is called the 'pomme de terre' or 'earth apple'.

Oranges are called "golden apples" or "Chinese apples" in some languages, e.g. Greek and Latin.
4. In the Bible, which of these creatures tempted Eve to eat the apple from the forbidden tree in the Garden of Eden?

Answer: Serpent

The Bible does not actually say that the fruit of the forbidden tree was an apple, but this is how people often tell the story in Christianity. The story of Adam & Eve is quite similar to a story from Greek mythology - "The Garden of the Hesperides" - where a Goddess called Eris takes a 'golden apple' from a forbidden garden, leading to the fall of Troy. Perhaps the artists who painted Adam & Eve with an apple were influenced by this story.
5. Which of these fairytale princesses fell into a deep sleep after eating an apple that was been poisoned by a wicked queen?

Answer: Snow White

The queen was jealous of Snow White because the queen's mirror told her that Snow White was now 'the fairest of them all'. The queen gave Snow White a poisoned apple that made her fall asleep. The seven dwarfs thought Snow White was dead, but a handsome prince comes along and wakes her. In the more modern versions, he does this with a kiss.
6. Which of these drinks is most commonly made using apples?

Answer: Cider

Cider can be made with the juice of many different fruits including pears and peaches, but apples are used most often. It takes about 36 apples to make a gallon of cider.

Cider is made all over the world and is usually an alcoholic drink. In America, cider can refer to pressed fruit juice with no alcohol and the alcoholic cider is called 'hard cider'. In Sweden, cider is usually a lot sweeter than in other countries, and tends to be flavoured with other fruits.
7. According to the popular saying, "An apple a day keeps ____________"

Answer: the doctor away.

Apples are very good for you and contain antioxidants and Vitamin C to keep you healthy and away from the doctor. Apples have also been said to be good for keeping the dentist away because the tough skin of the apple helps to clean your teeth while you eat, but remember that apples also contain sugar which teeth do not like.
8. Which of these describes the most famous logo of Apple Inc, who make Macintosh computers, iPhones and iPods?

Answer: A rainbow apple with a bite taken out of it.

The 'rainbow' logo was used from 1976 until 1998, when it was replaced by the same design in a single colour. For a very short time before this, the company used a picture of Sir Isaac Newton underneath an apple tree.

Apple Inc were founded on 1st April 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne.
9. Which of these is the name of a type of apple?

Answer: Golden Delicious

The Golden Delicious is one of the world's most popular apples because of its sweet and tasty flavour. The first Golden Delicious apples were grown in Clay County, West Virginia. The Golden Delicious is just one of over 7500 different kinds of apples in the world!
10. Which of these is famous for being a traditional American dessert?

Answer: Apple Pie

Apple pies are usually made using a pastry case filled with sliced apples and sugar and perhaps a pinch of cinnamon. The pies are popular throughout the world and although they have been enjoyed for many centuries, the apple pie has become a cultural icon in America and a symbol of national pride.
