Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The game of snooker starts with how many balls on the table?

Answer: 22

At the start of the game there are 15 red balls (one point each) and then one of each ball of yellow (two points), green (three points), brown (four points), blue (five points), pink (six points), black (seven points) and the white cue ball.

The snooker table is set up for play by grouping all the red balls together in a tight triangle, with the pink ball immediately in front of the first red ball. The other colored balls are each set at predesignated positions on the table.
2. What does a player do to start a game of snooker?

Answer: Break off

The idea of the break-off is to hit a red ball and make it as difficult as you can for your opponent to score or hit a red ball when he/she plays next. It is very unusual for a red ball to be pocketed on the break-off; this is normally a tactical shot.
3. I have just potted a red ball. What would I score for that?

Answer: One point

Each red ball is worth one point when it is potted. It then allows the player to continue their break by selecting a colour to pot. A player then continues to pot balls (red followed by a nominated coloured ball) until they miss.
4. I've just potted a red and can now choose a coloured ball to pot. What ball would I need to pot to score seven points from that one ball?

Answer: Black

The black ball is the highest scoring ball on the table.
5. After I potted a red ball, the only ball I could choose with a chance of potting it was the yellow ball. How many points will this ball add to my score should I pot it?

Answer: Two

The yellow is the lowest scoring ball of the baulk colours. The "baulk line" is the start line for the cue ball at the beginning of the match or following a foul shot when the cue ball goes in off the target ball. The green, brown and yellow balls are always placed at specific points on the baulk line, and are therefore known as the "baulk colours." The values for these balls are: yellow ball (two points), green ball (three points) and brown ball (four points).
6. A "snooker" is where a player cannot directly hit the object ball with the cue ball, there being either another ball or an obstruction in the way.

Answer: True

Whilst normally a player is "snookered" by another ball, they can also be "snookered" by a lip on a cushion.
7. On a normal size snooker table how many pockets are there?

Answer: 6

There is one pocket in each corner of the table and one each side halfway down the table.
8. If a player has made a foul shot and it has not been noticed by the umpire, they will consider themselves lucky and proceed without a penalty.

Answer: False

Snooker is one of the few sports these days where the sportsmanship is beyond reproach. Anything missed by either the umpire or other player will normally be brought to their attention by the player who has made the foul.
9. When a player knows they are beaten they normally do what?

Answer: Concede

If only one or maybe two snookers are required a player may continue to play, but once they know they have little chance of winning that frame or indeed the match they will concede.
10. What score is generally accepted as the highest score for a single break in snooker?

Answer: 147

It is possible to score 155 in a single break if a free ball is awarded before any other balls are potted, and a black potted off that ball. It is generally accepted though that 147 (or "a maximum") is the highest break in snooker.
