Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Three witches huddle around a boiling cauldron and chant a spell: "Eye of newt, and toe of frog, wool of bat, and tongue of dog." In which play do these conjurers appear?

Answer: William Shakespeare's "Macbeth"

The enchantment by the Three Witches or the Weird Sisters appears in Act IV, Scene 1, of Shakespeare's "Macbeth." They are drawn from (or at least inspired by) Holinshed's "Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland" (1587). Newts were known to frequent bogs and swamps (scary places), which partially explains their presence in the recipe for the witches' brew, as does the toxicity of most newts' skins.
2. In the 1986 science-fiction film "Aliens" (which was a sequel to the 1979 film "Alien"), which of the characters was affectionately nicknamed "Newt"?

Answer: A little girl survivor named Rebecca Jordan

Carrie Henn, the little girl who played Newt, was not a child actress, had never appeared on stage or in films before "Aliens" and never acted again. She earned a degree in liberal arts and child development and became a school teacher.
3. The 1936 novel "War with the Newts" describes a race of newts near Sumatra which are captured and "employed" by humans to work in aquatic endeavours. The newts quickly learn human language and culture, only to turn against humans. Who wrote this satirical work of science fiction?

Answer: Karel Čapek

This work was originally written in Czech but, like Čapek's earlier "Rossum's Universal Robots," was soon translated into English. The work criticizes German national socialism, American racism, capitalist greed, and colonial nationalism.
4. Which politician nicknamed "Newt" served as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999?

Answer: Newton Leroy Gingrich

Speaker Gingrich resigned both his post as Speaker of the House and his congressional seat in 1999. In addition to his "retirement" work as a political commentator and consultant, he is a prolific writer of both political books and historical novels.
5. At Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series of stories, what is the N.E.W.T.?

Answer: Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests

The N.E.W.T. is the rough equivalent of A-level exams in traditional secondary education in the UK. All students at Hogwarts must pass the O.W.L. (Ordinary Wizarding Level) examinations and those who do exceptionally well are allowed to take the N.E.W.T.
6. In what television cartoon series (shown in Germany, Canada and the US in the Nineties) does a newt kept as a pet eat "Zippo for Newts" newt food and grow to be six feet tall (and to speak English)?

Answer: Ned's Newt

In addition to his other powers, Newton (the newt) is able to transform himself into newt versions of such personalities as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable. Newton usually manages to get Ned into trouble ... and then revert to his normal size, leaving Ned to solve the problem.

This Michael Burgess-Andy Knight creation produced three seasons. The three incorrect answers are all actual titles of episodes of the show.
7. In which Kurt Vonnegut novel does Felix Hoenikker, the co-inventor of the atomic bomb, play a children's game with his son Newton "Newt" Hoenikker on the day that Hiroshima is bombed.

Answer: Cat's Cradle

Vonnegut's master's thesis was rejected by the University of Chicago. Years later, the university awarded the Vonnegut his master's in anthropology, accepting "Cat's Cradle" as satisfaction of the thesis requirement.
8. A programming library called NEWT was popular and is still used in some computer applications. What does it do?

Answer: Adds features to colour text-based user interfaces

NEWT stands for Not Erik's Windowing Toolkit. It permits text-mode applications (radio buttons, selection boxes and the like) which are popular in GUI environments to run on the console.
9. All newts are salamanders but not all salamanders are newts. Newts are found in Europe, North America and Asia. To what taxonomic family and subfamily do they belong?

Answer: Salamandridae pleurodelinae

Most newts may be kept as pets. See, for example, Frank Indiviglio, "Newts and Salamanders" (2d ed.), Barron's Educational Series, 2010.
10. In the Jeeves and Wooster stories by P.G. Wodehouse, one of Bertie's chums is fascinated by newts and both studies and keeps them. Who is this newt-enamoured friend?

Answer: Gussie Fink-Nottle

In "What Ho, Jeeves," Bertie says to his manservant, "Newts, Jeeves. Mister Fink-Nottle has a strong newt complex. You must have heard of newts. Those little sort of lizard things that charge about in ponds." Gussie appears in a significant role in four of the Jeeves and Wooster novels.
