Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Animals: Frogs are reptiles.

Answer: False

Frogs are amphibians, which means that while they are cold blooded, like reptiles, they possess the unique ability to breathe both underwater and on dry land. While adult frogs have lungs, which are obviously used to breathe on land, they use their skin to obtain oxygen while underwater. Their skin is permeable, allowing oxygen to move directly into their bloodstream.
Frogs make up the largest portion of amphibians (about 88%).
2. Brain Teasers: A frog falls into a well that is 12 feet deep. He is able to jump three feet at a time to get out, but because the sides of the well are so slippery, he slides back two feet after every jump. How many jumps does he need to make to get out of the well?

Answer: 10

If he falls back two feet for every three feet he jumps, he gains one foot with every jump. By the end of nine jumps, he will be nine feet up the well and just three feet from the top of the well. In his last three foot jump he will reach the top and freedom. Once out of the well he will not slide back another two feet.
3. Celebrities: Kermit the Frog is a puppet who has appeared in a children's, educational, television show, hosted his own variety show, starred in several movies and even played the role of Bob Cratchit in a version of the classic Dickens' tale. Who was the brilliant puppeteer who created and gave voice to Kermit?

Answer: Jim Henson

While still in high school, Henson had a job making puppets for a local children's program, an art that he pursued in college. Kermit, often referred to as Henson's alter-ego, made his first appearance in a short film that Henson created in his first year, entitled "Sam and Friends".
Henson's genius and mastery of his craft finally got the attention it deserved when Children's Television Workshop brought him onboard for their project "Sesame Street" (1969). Henson's talent continued to shine as his easily recognizable Muppets began to star in movies and even in their own variety show with human guest stars. Walt Disney's MGM Studios has a "Muppet Vision in 3D" attraction.
Henson died in 1990, from bacterial pneumonia, at the age of 53.
4. Entertainment: This animated character has been used in commercials for a ringtone, (by Jamba!). However his popularity has increased beyond that and he now has his own music CDs (including a Christmas Collection) that are popular around the world. He has become a celebrity in his own right, with his own fan club and merchandise. His music videos are very popular on You Tube. Who is this character?

Answer: Crazy Frog

According to Wikipedia, Crazy Frog started life as a sound recorded by Daniel Malmedahl, which he then posted on the web. Erik Wernquist liked the sound, and created an animated short called "The Annoying Thing". This was used in a commercial for ringtones and the popularity of the crazy little frog grew from there.
5. For Children: This popular children's game has participants jumping over a line of their friends, crouching down when they reach the end of the row, to be jumped over in turn. What is the name of this game?

Answer: Leapfrog

This simple game might only be played by the very young now, although an online version does exist. However it was very popular with children in the Depression, when electronic toys were non-existent and money was almost as scarce. It is open to any number of participants.
6. General: There are many superstitions involving frogs. They are supposed to bring good luck when they enter a home and killing one is definitely bad luck. What are you supposed to do with a frog, to prevent epilepsy?

Answer: wear its dried out body around your neck in a silk pouch

This not only prevents epilepsy, but it is supposed to be a guard against any kind of fit. How you would achieve this without incurring the bad luck associated with killing one is an interesting point to ponder! Another superstition says that if a frog's skin is shiny then expect good weather, but rain is coming if the skin is dull.
7. Geography: Although there are approximately 175 different species of poisonous frogs, only three of these have a toxicity level high enough to be used on poison darts or arrows. Where are these frogs (and the poisoned weapons) found?

Answer: South America

Poisonous frogs are generally brightly coloured, which serves as a warning to predators, and they tend to be quite small. They can be found in the northern half of South America, and the more toxic among them can kill a person by touch alone. There are no other animals in the world able to do this.
8. History: In 1885, Frog Lake (located in what is now known as Alberta), a group of Cree Indians shot and killed nine settlers in the area, in an incident which came to be known as the Frog Lake Massacre. What event inspired this attack?

Answer: the rebellion of the Metis, led by Louis Riel

The Metis rebellion broke out in March 1885, when a group of Metis successfully engaged a group of Royal Canadian Mounted Police at Duck Lake. The attack at Frog Lake occurred a week later and was caused by the Cree's dissatisfaction over the way their treaties were not being honoured and by the decline of the buffalo population.

The protagonists at Frog Lake were eventually caught and hanged in the largest public hanging in Canadian history.
9. Hobbies: Which part of a frog is/are considered a delicacy in French and Chinese cuisine?

Answer: legs

Frog legs are usually cooked in oil and served with butter and garlic and are also popular in French speaking parts of the American south.
They are most associated with France though, where anywhere from 60 to 80 millions frog legs are eaten every year. In fact the English often scornfully refer to the French as Frogs.

Our Australian friends prefer their frogs to be chocolate. Long before J.K. Rowling made chocolate frogs popular in her "Harry Potter" series, Harry Melbourne created Freddo the Frog, a chocolate delight that was once produced by MacRobertson Chocolates but is now made by Cadburys.
10. Humanities: the expression "frog in your throat" is used to describe a situation where you have swallowed something that has gotten stuck half way down your throat.

Answer: False

The idiom refers to a dry, scratchy feeling that makes you cough and may make it difficult for you to speak properly. The origin of the expression may date back to Medieval times when doctors would put a frog in the mouth of someone who was coughing. They did this because they felt the secretions from the skin would coat the throat of the patient and cure the cough.
11. Literature: There have been many versions of the fairy tale "The Frog Prince" over the years, with the version told by the Brothers Grimm being probably the best known. In this version, what did the princess do to ultimately break the spell?

Answer: She threw the frog against the wall.

In the story, a spoiled princess drops her golden ball into a pond. She agrees to allow the frog to sit beside her, eat from the same plate as her at dinner and to sleep beside her if he retrieves her ball. Once the frog returns the ball she doesn't feel obligated to keep her promise but her father insists that she does. When the frog asks to be put on her bed she throws him against the wall in disgust and he changes back into a handsome prince.
Why the prince would want to marry her after she proved herself to be so untrustworthy is beyond me, but as the fairy tale goes, they do wed.
Over the years the story has evolved so that the princess must kiss the frog to break his enchantment, but violence was a common theme in traditional fairy tales. In one variation of the story, from Scotland, the frog does indeed need to be beheaded.
12. Movies: In "Shrek 2" we find the reverse of the old fairy tale, and learn that Fiona's father, Harold, is actually a frog who has been enchanted by the Fairy Godmother to be human. What happens to Harold in "Shrek the Third"?

Answer: He croaks (dies).

At the end of "Shrek 2" the spell on Harold is broken by the Fairy Godmother, when Harold gets in the way. At the beginning of "Shrek the Third" we find Fiona and Shrek filling in for the king and queen because of Harold's illness. In a stirring deathbed scene (croak is slang for dying), Harold names an unwilling Shrek as his heir to the throne, revealing the name of one other possible heir when Shrek insists that he doesn't want the job.
13. Music: "Jeremiah was a bullfrog; was a good friend of mine. I never understood a single word he said, but I helped him drink his wine." What fun song do these lyrics come from?

Answer: Joy to the World

Written by Hoyt Axton, "Joy to the World" was a huge hit for the rock group Three Dog Night. In fact "Billboard Magazine" named it the top single of the year for 1971.
Legend has it that the group only recorded the song reluctantly, needing one last song to fill out the album they were working on, "Naturally". Much to their surprise, it turned out to be their biggest hit ever.
14. People: Ian Edward Fraser was a lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve during the Second World War. He was a naval frogman, commanded a submarine and received a Victoria Cross after the successful completion of a very dangerous mission. In what capacity did he use his frogman skills after the war?

Answer: in police work

While employed as a police officer, Fraser donned his old scuba gear and went down to look for the body, instead of using the usual drag net approach of searching for a missing body (in water).
He is often cited as being one of the driving forces behind the popularity of scuba diving, as he and some friends set up an exhibit on how the frogman approach to diving and lighter equipment used, was infinitely more useful than the older, heavier equipment had been. He also started Underwaterwork, a commercial diving business.

His Victoria Cross was awarded for a mission that involved the piloting of a submarine underneath a heavy Japanese cruiser. His frogman, James Joseph Magennis, then swam out and attached mines to the bottom of the cruiser, which were subsequently exploded when the sub was out of range. Magennis also received a Victoria Cross.
15. Religion: The Egyptian Goddess Heqet was depicted either as a woman with a frog's head, or as a frog. What was she considered the Goddess of?

Answer: childbirth

Although Heqet was most often associated with childbirth, she was also worshipped as a goddess of fertility and creation, both human and in grain germination. Frogs were very prolific along the banks of the Nile, which is perhaps where the association between frogs and fertility started. The priestesses who served Heqet were usually the midwives of the society.
16. Sci/Tech: As dramatized in the movie "Magnolia", there have been actual incidents where it has rained frogs.

Answer: True

Although the occurrences are rare, there have been incidents of both fish and frogs dropping from the sky in rain. The animals that have been dropped have been both alive (some actually living through the experience) and frozen, and whole or torn to pieces.
The theory behind this phenomenon is that tornadoes and water spouts can be strong enough to lift fish and frogs out of ponds and larger bodies of water. The poor creatures can then be carried for short distances, or even miles, before being released.
17. Sports: In what American State would you find University team, the Horned Frogs?

Answer: Texas

Sports teams at the Texas Christian University, in Fort Worth Texas, are known as the Horned Frogs, after the school's mascot. Female teams are given the name Lady Frogs.
Interestingly enough, the Texas Horned Lizard, which the team's logo most closely resembles, is not a frog, although it is often referred to as one.
18. Television: In a 1955 cartoon entitled "One Froggy Evening", Warner Brothers ("Looney Tunes Cartoons") introduced a talented singing frog called Michigan J. Frog. What song did Michigan sing first?

Answer: Hello Ma Baby

"Hello Ma Baby" was written in 1899 by Ida Emerson and Joseph E, Howard. Michigan J. Frog sang a few other songs, including "Michigan Rag", which was written for the cartoon by the frog's creators, Michael Maltese and Chuck Jones, along with musical director Milt Franklyn.
The basic story of the cartoon is that a rather down-on-his luck man finds this amazing performing frog and thinks his fortune will be made. However the frog will not perform for an audience and he soon leaves the frog back where he found him, where he is found again several years later.
19. Video Games: In 1981, Sega/Gremlin introduced an arcade game wherein the player had to get his little frogs home safely. What was this game called?

Answer: Frogger

In "Frogger" players had to successfully navigate their frogs across both a busy road and a danger filled river. The game was considered quite innovative at the time and online versions of it can still be found.
A popular episode of "Seinfeld" pays homage to the game, with George running across a busy street in much the same way that the frogs in the game would have to.
20. World: Which beer has used three frogs in its advertising campaigns?

Answer: Budweiser

The Budweiser frogs, appropriately named Bud, Weis and Er, are puppets. They were first seen during Budweiser commercials in Superbowl, on January 31, 1993.
The commercial started with first Bud croaking his name, soon to be joined by Weis and then by Er.
Budweiser is a brewing company in the States, with head offices in St. Louis. It uses rice as well as barley in its brewing process, to give the beer a lighter taste.
