Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As we fly into Sky Harbor International Airport, we can see Chase Field from overhead. We'll be heading there later to catch a game by the local MLB team named after what venomous desert critters?

Answer: Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks were one of two expansion teams that began play in Major League Baseball in the 1998 season, the other being the Tampa Bay Rays. In 2001, the Diamondbacks won the World Series in a thrilling seven-game contest over the New York Yankees, becoming the fastest MLB expansion team to a world series victory. That world series crown was also the first ever men's major professional sports team championship for the state of Arizona.
2. From Phoenix, we'll travel to the west to Lake Havasu City, a popular resort destination near the California border. While many people know about the relocation of the London Bridge to Lake Havasu in the late 1960s, you may be less familiar with the entrepreneur who facilitated the purchase and relocation of the bridge, Robert Paxton McCulloch. McCulloch founded what type of manufacturing business in 1943 that allowed him to fork over 2.5 million dollars for 10,000 tons of granite?

Answer: Chainsaws

Robert McCulloch founded McCulloch Motors Corporation in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to manufacture chainsaws and other outdoor power tools. In 1964, McCulloch expanded his business into Arizona and founded Lake Havasu City to house his factory and workers. In 1968, McCulloch bid successfully to purchase the London Bridge.

It took three years to dissemble to bridge, repair the granite blocks, ship the components, and reassemble the bridge in Lake Havasu City.
3. From Lake Havasu City, we'll travel northeast to the south rim of Grand Canyon National Park. It took some effort, but Grand Canyon was officially designated a landmark through legislation signed by which president?

Answer: Woodrow Wilson

The Grand Canyon was initially established as a forest reserve in 1893 by Benjamin Harrison. Theodore Roosevelt later established the Grand Canyon as a national monument in 1908. After multiple failed attempts in the 1910s to establish a national park, a successful vote finally took place in 1919 and the Grand Canyon National Park Act was signed by President Wilson on February 26th, making it the fifteenth national park created.
4. Situated at nearly 7,000 feet (2,100 meters) above sea level, Flagstaff is our next destination. A popular tourist spot due to its mild summer weather and accessibility to the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff is also home to Northern Arizona University, or NAU. NAU's athletic teams compete under what rather appropriate nickname?

Answer: Lumberjacks

Founded in 1899, Northern Arizona University is one of three public four-year universities in the state of Arizona. The Lumberjacks compete in the Big Sky conference in all sports except swimming and diving. A perennial powerhouse in Cross Country, the Lumberjacks won 6 division 1 NCAA national championships between 2016 and 2022.
5. From Flagstaff, we head east on Interstate 40 and stop off in what town where the Eagles stood on a corner and saw a girl in a flatbed Ford?

Answer: Winslow

Winslow (win slow, get it?), the second largest city in Navajo County, was made famous by the Eagles song "Take it Easy" though there is some disputation on which corner in the town is actually being referred to in the song. A statue of Eagles member Glen Frey along with a sign that reads "Standin' on The Corner" can be found where route 66 is intersected by Kinsley Avenue. Local legend, however, places the corner at Route 66 and Switzer Canyon Drive where Glenn Frey met up with fellow musician Jackson Browne (who is credited along with Frey) to finish writing the song.
6. Next, we'll head southeast to the Fort Apache Indian Reservation to spend a few days at Sunrise Park Resort, one of only four of what in the entire state?

Answer: Ski resort

Owned and operated by the White Mountain Apache Tribe, the ski slopes at Sunrise Park Resort boast 7 ski lifts and 67 total runs, the longest of which is just under 3 miles in length. A robust summer season offers mountain biking, zip-lining, and rock climbing. Arizona's other Ski Resorts include the Arizona Snowbowl near Flagstaff, Mt. Lemon Sky Valley northeast of Tucson, and the Elk Ridge Ski Area near Williams, Arizona, which closed down prior to the 2019-2020 ski season.

7. Tombstone, Arizona is our next destination, the site of the infamous 1881 showdown between the Earp brothers and McLaury and Clanton gang. Although it is now known as the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, the fighting didn't actually take place at the O.K. Corral. Instead, the action occurred six doors to the west at what kind of establishment?

Answer: Photography Studio

Though stories vary wildly on how the actual events leading up to the gunfight went down, both McLaury brothers(Tom and Frank) and Billy Clanton were killed. Morgan Earp, Wyatt Earp, and Doc Holiday were wounded in the showdown outside Camillus "Buck" Sydney Fly's photography studio (say cheese). C.S. Fly was eyewitness to the events but did not capture any of it on film.

Many of his photographs, including some of the earliest known pictures of Native Americans, can be seen at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C.
8. From Tombstone, we'll head northwest to the Old Pueblo, Tucson, Arizona, to visit Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. While we enjoy spotting the A-10s flying overhead, we'll also drive around the eastern side of the air force base and take in the largest one of these facilities in the world. What type of facility are we visiting?

Answer: An aircraft boneyard

While all of these things can be found in or around Tucson, it is the Boneyard that takes the prize of largest in the world. Officially called the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group, the David-Monthan Boneyard was established in 1964 and holds nearly 4000 military aircraft.

The hot and dry climate of the region is ideal for preventing corrosion of the metal. Aviation enthusiasts can also find another boneyard about 40 miles to the northwest. Pinal Airpark, built in 1945, stores mostly civilian aircraft.
9. For lunch, we'll grab ourselves a Sonoran Hot Dog. A southwestern take on the American classic, the Sonoran Hot Dog is usually wrapped with bacon and topped with onions, salsa, and what other unusual ingredient?

Answer: Pinto beans

The Sonoran Hot Dog originated in Hermosillo, the capital of the state of Sonora in Mexico which borders Arizona to the south. Although variations exist on the use of toppings, pinto beans are a must. The word "pinto" alludes to coloring of white and dark patches and is typically also used to describe horses that have large white patches.
10. Our final stop in this magnificent road trip will be to a movie studio. On the west side of Tucson lies Old Tucson Studios where scenes for hundreds of movies were shot over the years including this 1980s comedic western starring Chevy Chase, Martin Short, and Steve Martin. Which movie am I describing?

Answer: Three Amigos

Originally built for the 1940 motion picture "Arizona" Old Tucson became a regular shooting location for movie westerns. In 1960, Old Tucson's facilities were upgraded and the theme park was born.

"Three Amigos" premiered in December of 1986 and tells the story of three sombrero-wearing, out-of-work actors who find themselves unwitting participants in a small Mexican town's resistance to a local gang. Though initial reviews were not favorable, the movie has gained a cult-like status among cinema fans.
