1. For which invention is JLL McAdam famous?

Answer: A type of road surface

Waterproof material which was eventually used for making coats etc was invented by C MacIntosh (hence the popular name for raincoats) in 1823. The pneumatic tyre was the invention of RW Thomson and developed by JB Dunlop. The deep fried Mars Bar is apparently served in fish and chip shops. (Thanks to maygrayuk for that)

Answer: Adam Smith

Adam Smith ((1723-1790) was a political economist, the first to establish this as a separate science. His book "The Wealth of Nations" was published in 1776.
3. Who was the last Stuart monarch of Great Britain?

Answer: Anne

Queen Anne died in 1714. In spite of having 17 children, none of them survived her. She was succeeded by George I who was the son of the Elector of Hanover. When he arrived from Germany he spoke no English and was (un)popularly known as farmer George or the wee German Lairdy.
4. Whose monument stands at Glenfinnan?

Answer: Bonnie Prince Charlie

The monument at Glenfinnan marks the arrival of Prince Charles Edward Stuart in Scotland and the beginning of the Jacobite rebellion. It culminated in defeat at the battle of Culloden in 1746.
5. What mathematical system was developed by John Napier?

Answer: Logarithms

John Napier lived from 1550 - 1617. He was a mathematician who invented a calculating system by the use of logarithms in 1614, which made multiplication and division easier. He also devised the modern notation of decimal numbers and an early calculator known as "Napier's Bones.
6. Which range of hills forms the border with England?

Answer: Cheviots

The Cheviots stretch from Longtown in the West to Yetholm in the east. The Cairngorms and Campsies are both in Scotland; the Pennines in England
7. Which 17th century king authorised a translation of the Bible?

Answer: James VI

James VI of Scotland and I of England was the son of Mary Queen of Scots. He succeeded Elizabeth I to the English throne and promptly took his court to London. He was the first Stuart monarch of England and the first monarch of both Scotland and England (the Union of the Crowns in 1603).

He decided on the format of this version to emphasise the episcopal values of the 17th century church as opposed to the King Henry VIII version (the Great Bible). The "authorised" version was never in fact authorised but accepted.
8. Which scientist is associated with the principles of static electricity?

Answer: Kelvin

William Thomson, Lord Kelvin (1824-1907) was born in Ireland and became a professor at Glasgow University. He specialised in the science of thermodynamics and devised a scale of absolute temperature in which zero corresponds to -273C.
9. Which is the second highest mountain in Scotland?

Answer: Ben MacDui

Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the British Isles at 1344m followed by Ben MacDui at 1308m; Ben Wyvis is 1046m and Ben Lawers is 1214m. Ben MacDui is in the Cairngorms in Aberdeenshire. (Information obtained from list of Scottish Munros)
10. What was the original occupation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle?

Answer: Doctor

Scotsman Sir Arthur Conan Doyle(1859-1930) was a doctor before becoming an author. His most famous creation was the character of Sherlock Holmes.
