Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Better start to dig, yo! Which of these playing card suits refers to an item used to dig in one's garden?

Answer: Spades

Spades are one of the four typical suits in a standard deck of fifty-two playing cards. The spade, one of the two black suits, represents a small shovel with a tapered point. You'd most likely use a hand spade when planting flowers; a trowel, a similar implement, can be used to the same effect when gardening. A tree spade, consisting of several large, metal spades, is used to plant and dig out much larger trees.
Speaking of digging, you're also likely to find some diamonds if you dig deep enough. ;)
2. Can I get a question-- what-what?! "We all have a weakness/Some of ours are easier to identify/Look me in the eye" "Dig" was a song released in 2007 by what U.S. alternative rock band?

Answer: Incubus

Released on their 2006 album, "Light Grenades", "Dig" was their second single from the disc. This, their sixth album release, went gold and became their first Billboard number one album in the United States. "Dig" got a great deal of radio airplay and reached number four on the Billboard Alt. Rock chart. Two of their other songs from the album, "Anna-Molly" and "Love Hurts", went to number one on the same chart.

Incubus formed in 1991 and became well-known for their number one single, "Drive", from their third CD, "Make Yourself".
3. Yo, can you dig an idiom? How many 'feet under' would a gravedigger need to dig, according to the old saying?

Answer: Six

A wonderful euphemism, the term 'six feet under' refers to someone who's dead and buried. The phrase was also used as the title of a popular HBO show which ran from 2001 to 2005. The show starred Michael C. Hall (before he starred on "Dexter"), Peter Krause, Frances Conroy, and the remainder of a large ensemble cast. Creator Alan Ball went on to develop "True Blood" for HBO after the emotional finale of "Six Feet Under".

The show followed a family as they lived their lives and ran a funeral home.
4. Time for buried bling-bling! Buried treasure is a motif normally featured film and literature containing which of these collective groups?

Answer: Pirates

Buried treasure has been a pirate motif since Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 children's story "Treasure Island" in which Jim Hawkins and a group of sailors (and some pirates) head to the titular locale to find lost pirate booty. Fictional pirates buried their treasures to hide it from others, using a map (with an X marking the spot) to locate it when they wanted to reclaim it. Unfortunately for them, it would be dug up by other pirates for whatever reason.

The idea of buried treasure is often visualized in the form of a treasure chest.
5. This question's totally underground! Sometimes, tunnels are an efficient method of traveling from place to place. Which of these famous world sites reportedly contains acres upon acres of utilidor tunnels?

Answer: Walt Disney World

In order to maintain the illusion of happiness, clean family fun, and the spectacle of the Disney name, employees at Orlando's Walt Disney World have used a large series of utilidors built underneath the respective theme parks to travel from show to show and perform custodial duties behind the scenes. For decades, Disney 'cast members' used the tunnels to dress up in the costumes of everyone's favourite Disney characters.

These tunnels are so expansive that traveling from end to end requires a vehicle of some sort.
6. Yo, it's time to go down. Underground and Down Under in the hiz-ouse! One of the most famous Australia mining towns is Coober Pedy. What gets dug up in this location?

Answer: Opals

Coober Pedy is a mining town in South Australia found a great deal's distance away from the city of Adelaide (which is on the country's southern coast). This town is known for its digging, its opals, and its hot, hot heat. It's no wonder a number of the houses in Coober Pedy are built under the arid surface of the outback. Opals are beautiful gemstones and the vast majority of them are dug up in Australia. Fortunately, you need to dig deep to get to them. Aside from the mines, the town is also an interesting tourist spot.

The Coober Pedy Golf Club is one of the hottest golf courses in the world.
7. It's time to dig old-school! What Pokemon was well-known for being able to use the attack 'Dig' in battle to harm foes in the original "Pokemon" video games?

Answer: Diglett

Diglett first appeared in "Pokemon Blue and Red", two companion games for the handheld Game Boy Nintendo system. A small ground-type Pokemon, its most famous attack was Dig, a technique which allowed the Pokemon to dig underground and then attack on the following turn, missing whatever attack a following Pokemon would use during its disappearance. Diglett evolved into Dugtrio at level 32; the difference between them was threefold...mainly because the amount of Digletts tripled. Dugtrio is literally three Digletts bound together.
"Dig Dug", of course, is from an arcade game about digging.
8. Say what?! Is it possible to mine for petrified wood?

Answer: Yes

While petrified wood is typically found in petrified forests, it is also possible to find petrified wood, after years of changes to the environment, buried underground-- entire trees, in fact. Petrified wood is formed when the natural materials inside trees are replaced with minerals, giving it the quality of being non-living. Depending on the minerals or elements that are used to replace the natural insides of the wood, it will appear with different colours while still retaining the same textures and shapes as the original plant.

At the point wood becomes petrified, it becomes known as a stone, not a form of plantlife.
9. Yo, can you dig big? In which U.S. state was the 'Big Dig' project started?

Answer: Massachusetts

The Big Dig was a project set in motion to divert and create new roadways in the Boston metropolitan area, alleviating a great deal of congestion in the city's downtown. The Big Dig was conceived in the mid-20th century but never finished until the first decade of the 21st-century due to its immense costs and a great deal of manpower required to create new tunnels and highways. Surprisingly, the half-century of planning and work resulted in even more bottle-necking overall...moreso on the new tunnels. Due to faults in the tunnels, a collapse occurred in 2006, causing even more problems.
10. It's time to dig into some words-- WORD! The prefix 'sub-' means 'under. With this in mind, subway rail systems are only constructed underground.

Answer: False

Subways are rapid transit systems constructed both above and below ground; many subways actually go both ways. Subways are usually built in larger cities to contain a large amount of traffic and transport at faster speeds than on roadways which, for many, can be congested.

The largest subways in the world can be found in New York City, Shanghai, and London. London's Underground, 'The Tube', is one of the most famous in the world. Many countries employ rapid transit systems above and below ground taking thousands upon thousands of cars off the road. New York's subway system, the largest in the world, has over four hundred stations, some of which connect to each other by ferries, many of which rise above-ground, especially in the residential areas in the Bronx and Queens.
