Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Meg Ryan starred opposite which actor in 'Sleepless in Seattle' and 'You've Got Mail'?

Answer: Tom Hanks

Both of these lovely rom-coms were directed by Nora Ephron, with 'Sleepless in Seattle' released in 1993 and 'You've Got Mail' following five years later. Tom Hanks was born in 1956 in California and has played numerous iconic roles in movies such as 'Sully: Miracle on the Hudson' (2016) and 'Philadelphia' (1993).

Margaret Mary Emily Anne Hyra (Meg Ryan) was born in Connecticut in November 1961. Her filmography includes 'When Harry Met Sally' (1989) and 'Kate & Leopold' (2001), among many others.
2. What "meg" is ground and sprinkled across the top of custards or used in meat dishes?

Answer: Nutmeg

The nutmeg is an evergreen tree (Myristica fragrans) that originates in the East Indies, and which is cultivated for its spicy, nutty seed-pods.

The hard, aromatic seed of this tree has its lacy exterior removed (that is also used in cooking; it's ground up and called mace) and the pod inside is grated and used as a spice. While it's most often bought pre-ground, the flavour is much more intense when it's ground freshly into the dish. It is traditionally sprinkled on custard tarts, but can also enhance the flavour of spinach or silverbeet (chard) when added just before serving.
3. Which Aussie megastar, who died in 2023, was a big fan of gladioli, possums?

Answer: Barry Humphries

John Barry Humphries, AC CBE, was born in Kew, Victoria, in 1934. He had a series of characters that he developed for both television and stage performances, and in particular, Dame Edna Everage was popular with audiences across the world. Dame Edna, originally a frumpy Melbourne housewife from Moonee Ponds, developed into a flamboyant and witty megastar.

When greeting the audience, Dame Edna would call out 'Hello, Possums!". She would bestow gladioli on her guests, when interviewing them on her television show; and she appeared in the Royal Variety Performance in 2013.
4. In the Louisa May Alcott novel 'Little Women', what are the names of Meg's sisters?

Answer: Jo, Beth and Amy

'Little Women' was set in New England during the U.S. Civil War, and was published in two parts in 1868 and 1869. The sequels of 'Little Women' were 'Good Wives' (1869), 'Little Men' (1871) and 'Jo's Boys' (1886). In 'Good Wives', the second part of the novel, Meg marries John Brooke, the tutor of their next door neighbour, Theodore Lawrence (Laurie).

This most popular of books has been translated into movies on several occasions.
5. In the video game, "Meg's Monster", it's game over if what happens?

Answer: Meg cries

In this multi-platform game created by Nintendo, the aim is to keep Meg happy while fending off the monster named Roy, who has nearly countless lives. While progressing through a series of challenges to find a way to get Meg home, ghouls must be defeated, playing card puzzles figured out, and malevolent no-gooders have to be evaded.

It looks like it's a remastered game from the 80s, but in fact it was a new game, released in the 2020s. Oh noooo...Meg lost her toy...!
6. In computing, 'megabits' and 'megabytes' are interchangeable terms.

Answer: False

While both of these terms are computer related, they actually refer to different forms of measurement. A bit (b) is the smallest unit of measurable digital information and there are 8 bits in a byte.

The term 'megabits' means one million bits, but it's most commonly used to measure the speed at which data is transmitted across a network. This transmission speed is abbreviated to Mbps (megabits per second).

A megabyte, by contrast, usually refers to the size of a file. A megabyte is equal to 1 million bytes so a megabit is 1/8 of a megabyte. The term 'mega' comes from the Greek word 'megas', meaning large or great. In computing, mega is used for one million of something.
7. Princess Margaret earned the newspaper headline "Princess Meg To Marry Commoner Named Jones" in 1960, when she announced her engagement to whom?

Answer: Antony Armstrong-Jones

Antony Armstrong-Jones was 1st Earl of Snowdon and was married to Princess Margaret for 18 years before their divorce in 1978. Born in 1930 in London, Armstrong-Jones was a British photographer and filmmaker, famous for his feted portraits of high-born people.

He became an artistic adviser of The Sunday Times magazine in 1960. He and Princess Margaret had two children, David Armstrong-Jones and Lady Sarah Chatto.
8. Located north-east of Penrith near Little Salkeld in Cumbria, (England), what kind of feature is 'Long Meg and Her Daughters'?

The 68 daughters are boulders made of a form of granite called rhyolite. The circle has a diameter of about 107m (350 feet). William Wordsworth was so enamoured of it he wrote a poem in its praise in 1822.

"Gracious God, bless the Magyar
With good cheer, prosperity,
In the ravages of war,
Shield them from adversity;
Whom from old ill fate has torn,
Bring us to a happy morn!
Long have we atoned and mourn for past and years unborn!"
