Question 1 of 10
1. He is possibly the archetypal male heartthrob. This gorgeous Myrmidon was half-man, half-God. Add an undefeated record on the battle field and a certain way with the ladies, and he set the standard for millennia! (Just disregard him spending the first half of his life pretending to be a woman.)
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Bachelor number two is a young adventurer whose sword may be a bit faster than his brain. Helped by his three similarly hunky friends however, this hero manages to survive run-ins with the Duke of Buckingham, King of France, Evil Cardinal, and a crazy seductress. Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Lets try someone a little less well known... "In looks, grace, and raw seductive appeal, he knew no equal". He also boasts great cunning, which he uses to make himself a sort of phantom, thereby instilling a supernatural fear in the minions of a tyrannical king, who are invading his own kingdom. It would be a depressing life, if he didn't have all his happy friends behind him. Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Bachelor number four is represented in film beautifully by James Franco, with his dominating figure and sad dark eyes. The character is driven by passion for one woman who saved him from death. But he's torn when that woman is forced to marry his own king, the man who saved his life and raised him as a son. He's also hailed as the single greatest warrior in England and Ireland combined. Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. This man's sultry good looks were enough to captivate every woman in "Wuthering Heights". With his brooding bad manners, arrogance, and womanizing, you have a typical Hollywood heartthrob. Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Bachelor number 6... "was tall and straight; his hair was of shining gold, his face fair and young and fearless and full of joy; his eyes were bright and keen, and his voice like music; on his brow sat wisdom, and in his hand was strength". You can't go wrong with pretty people who have magic powers, and a white horse that saves Frodo at the entrance to Rivendell. Of the following, which of Tolkien's characters is being described? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Speaking of pretty people with power... As a young man this bad guy was reputed to be of unequaled charisma and good looks - that's how he got his way before he could use magic to do it for him. Even if he is trying to kill everyone's favorite boy-wizard, you have to admit... there's just something about the "bad boy". Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Number Eight is simultaneously a simple farm-boy, and the single most revered and feared pirate on the open seas; this guy would never get boring! "With eyes like the sea after a storm", fair hair, and the athletic skill to scale mountains, outfight fencing masters, defeat giants, outwit Sicilian geniuses, and come back from the dead, all for the sake of true love. Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. This guy is dark and twisty as they come. Always shrouded in a long cape and hidden beneath a wide brimmed hat, he surveys his enemies with calculating eyes. He makes a living as a sword-wielding hitman, but his honor prevents him from always carrying out his duties. This earns him mortal enemies in the Spanish Inquisition, but luckily he has a few loyal, if eccentric, friends who are always prepared to fight! Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. And our final bachelor: Ok, so Johnny Depp may have had a hand in this one... But even so, who wouldn't love a perpetually drunk, womanizing, slightly effeminate scallywag? Well, women do tend to like a "fixer-upper". Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. He is possibly the archetypal male heartthrob. This gorgeous Myrmidon was half-man, half-God. Add an undefeated record on the battle field and a certain way with the ladies, and he set the standard for millennia! (Just disregard him spending the first half of his life pretending to be a woman.)

Answer: Achilles

As described by Homer's "Iliad", in the Trojan War Achilles led the Army of Myrmidons, meaning Ants! Not exactly a terrifying battle mascot, but they were pretty effective nonetheless.
Paris was another heartthrob in the "Iliad", but its never been determined if it was his charm that stole Helen's heart, or if he just stole her. Either way, that abduction triggered the Trojan war, bringing the warrior Achilles eternal glory before his death by Paris' arrow.
2. Bachelor number two is a young adventurer whose sword may be a bit faster than his brain. Helped by his three similarly hunky friends however, this hero manages to survive run-ins with the Duke of Buckingham, King of France, Evil Cardinal, and a crazy seductress.

Answer: D'Artagnan

D'Artagnan is aided by Athos, Porthos, and Aramis in my favorite Dumas novel, "The Three Musketeers". He falls in love at the drop of a hat, but aside from that makes a pretty formidable adversary. Planchet is D'Artagnan's servant, who eventually gains some recognition for himself in the Musketeers ranks. Wilfred of Ivanhoe is the colorful protagonist from Sir Walter Scott's "Ivanhoe"; a fun novel which includes Robin Hood (Locksley) and some of his Merry Men.

Answer: Prince Bran ap Brychan

Bran is the hero in Stephen Lawkhead's retelling of the classic story of Robin Hood. Lawkhead's novel is called "Hood" and takes the legend in a fascinating new direction.
Count Dracula is the creation of Bram Stoker, but based on the terrifying figure of Vlad (The Impaler) Tepes III. Vlad was a prince and did invoke some supernatural terror, and he was trying to keep the invading Ottomans out of his kingdom, but I doubt he had many happy friends behind him, and was probably also lacking in the "raw seductive appeal".

Answer: Tristan of Aragon

I had never heard the tragic story of Tristan and Isolde until it was brought to the big screen. It is a "star-crossed-lovers-tragedy", like Romeo and Juliet, but it comes from Celtic myth and predates Shakespeare by several centuries. James Franco plays a wonderful Tristan, and Sophia Myles is the beautiful Isolde.
Aragorn is the wayward King from JRR Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings", and "Othello" is the title character of Shakespeare's play, also about jealousy and temptation.
5. This man's sultry good looks were enough to captivate every woman in "Wuthering Heights". With his brooding bad manners, arrogance, and womanizing, you have a typical Hollywood heartthrob.

Answer: Heathcliff

"Wuthering Heights" is the only novel by Emily Bronte, published in 1847. The plot weaves around the ill-fated love of Heathcliff and Catherine, which consequently makes Heathcliff want to make everyone else on earth miserable.
Mr. Darcy refers to Fitzwilliam Darcy in Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice". David Copperfield is from the Charles Dickens novel of the same name, and Rochester is a grumpy man with a crazy wife locked in his attic in Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre" - my favorite book in this bunch.

Answer: Glorfindel

Glorfindel was a prominent and helpful elf in Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, though he didn't really make it into the movie version. I didn't complain because, well... Orlando Bloom :) Orlando played Legolas, another helpful elf, in the film adaptation, but he's described by Tolkien in the books with less reverence than Glorfindel.
Gandalf is the wise and powerful wizard, sort of shepherding events throughout the trilogy. Elladan is one of Elrond's sons, but his role in "Lord of the Rings" is minor.

Answer: Lord Voldemort

Lord Voldemort was formerly known as Tom Riddle, and used to manipulate people with an innocent face and sweet smile. Mastering that little trick is REAL magic!
Lucius Malfoy is the father of Draco, Harry's in-school nemesis. He would like to see the end of Mr. Potter as well.
Severus Snape is the greasy Potions Master at Hogwarts. I would like to say that he too dreams of slipping some poison into Harry's cauldron, but at this point no one can quite figure him out.
Remus Lupin on the other hand, is one of the good guys and inclined to protect Harry, despite the fact that he's a werewolf.

Answer: Westley

Westley, aka: "farmboy", and "the Dread Pirate Roberts", is the hero of one of my all time favorite movies AND books, "The Princess Bride". Inigo is a hilarious character also in this story. He's on a quest for revenge against the six-fingered man.
Captain Blood is the title character of a fantastic swashbuckling novel by Rafael Sabatini, published in 1922. Theseus was the legendary king of Athens, fathered (at least in part) by the God Poseidon. He had many adventures, including slaying the Minotaur, capturing the Marathonian Bull, and a stint in Hades' Underworld.

Answer: Captain Diego Alatriste

Captain Alatriste is the title character of Arturo Perez's new historical fiction trilogy. The first book has also recently been turned into a movie starring Viggo Mortensen as the Captain. Don Francisco de Quevodo is the Captain's wine-guzzling best friend, prone to exclaim, "we have no choice but to fight!" between gulps.
Don Quixote comes from Miguel Cervantes' classic text of the same name. It's a fun, if lengthy, literary romp through the many misadventures of an old man who imagines he's a great knight.
The Count of Monte Cristo is another excellent work of Dumas, about revenge and forgiveness. It was made into a film by Kevin Reynolds, who also Directed Tristan and Isolde. I must admit to loving this film, despite its plot deviations. Guy Pearce playing a fantastically nasty Fernand Mondego helped.
10. And our final bachelor: Ok, so Johnny Depp may have had a hand in this one... But even so, who wouldn't love a perpetually drunk, womanizing, slightly effeminate scallywag? Well, women do tend to like a "fixer-upper".

Answer: Captain Jack Sparrow

Johnny Depp has received a stunning amount of acclaim for making Captain Jack Sparrow, from "Pirates of the Caribbean", such a unique character.
Will Turner, played by Orlando Bloom, is another sexy sword wielder in the "Pirates" movies, but his more normal character is upstaged by Johnny's antics. Captain Barbossa, played by Geoffry Rush, may be based on real-life pirates, the Barbarossa brothers, who sailed the Mediterranean Sea in the early 1500s.
