Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1983, the song "99 Luftballons" hit number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. What was the name of the German band who recorded this song?

Answer: Nena

"99 Luftballons" was also made into an English version, titled "99 Red Balloons". The song tells of a girl and her boyfriend who release a red balloon into the sky, thus sparking a major alarm from the government and military, believing the country to be under an attack. The song ends with the girl looking at the ruins of a city and releasing a new red balloon.
2. In Greek mythology, the nine Muses are the goddesses of humanities. Which of these is NOT a subject represented by a Muse?

Answer: Chemistry

The nine Muses represent the arts and sciences of the Ancient Greek world. They are the goddesses of epic poetry, erotic poetry, lyric poetry, song, dance, tragedy, comedy, history, and astronomy. Their names, many of which have also found their way into modern vocabulary, are Calliope, Erato, Polyhymnia, Euterpe, Terpsichore, Melpomene, Thalia, Clio, and Urania.
3. Which animal, revered by ancient Egyptians, is commonly represented as having nine lives?

Answer: Cats

"Cats have nine lives" is an old saying, but which still makes sense. Cats are known for disappearing from their owners for several days and then reappearing suddenly; they have also been known to survive accidents well. A 1963 Disney film played off of this saying, titled "The Three Lives of Thomasina".
4. A cat o' nine tails was a particular kind of whip used aboard Royal Navy vessels during the 18th and 19th centuries, on sailors who had committed crimes. In which of these situations would a cat o' nine tails be used?

Answer: All of these

A cat o' nine tails was a whip of nine cords; each cord would be knotted, with more knots for severer crimes. A certain number of lashes would be administered depending on the crime; theft of food rations was often just as severe a crime as desertion and mutiny were. Common crimes usually only required up to fifty lashes, but severe crimes such as those listed could see lashes numbered in the hundreds. Sailors with sentences this high were often not expected to survive.
5. Complete this saying, which means that acting now saves time later: "A _____ in time saves nine."

Answer: stitch

"A stitch in time saves nine" refers to mending that often must be done on clothing and other fabric items. If mended while the tear is small, it will save you having to conduct a massive repair later when the tear is larger. In this case, the number nine has no hidden meaning other than that it rhymes with "time"!
6. "The Nine Tailors" is one of Dorothy L. Sayers' most popular Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries. Who or what are the nine tailors of the title?

Answer: A tolling of bells to report a death

In "The Nine Tailors", Lord Peter finds himself involved in a crime in a rural English town. The church of this town has a tradition of the bell ringers ringing "the nine tailors" at the death of a villager--tolling the church bells to report the death. These bells are, of course, the unlikely instruments of a particularly nasty death in the book.
7. Dante's masterpiece "Divine Comedy" mentions nine circles of Hell.

Answer: True

The "Divine Comedy" is a vision of afterlife, penned by Dante Alighieri. Written between about 1308 and 1320, it is considered a masterpiece of literature. In the first of three sections of the book, that of "Inferno", Dante describes nine circles of Hell.
8. At what point were/are there officially considered to be nine planets in the solar system?

Answer: Before 2006

Before 2006, Pluto was officially considered to be a planet, and thus there were nine planets in the solar system. As early as 2000, however, Pluto began to be left off of some charts of the planets. When other celestial bodies were found that nearly equaled Pluto's size in 2005, the International Astronomical Union met and decided in 2006 to classify Pluto as a dwarf planet.

After that date, however, Pluto was considered too small to be a planet, and the number dropped to eight. Pluto is now considered to be a dwarf planet, and is the ninth-largest object orbiting the sun.
9. This Beatles song sparked a conspiracy theory that band member Paul McCartney had died when it was thought that a voice could be heard speaking the words "turn me on, dead man" in it. What song was it?

Answer: Revolution 9

"Revolution 9" is an experimental song from The Beatles' 1968 album "The White Album". The rumor of Paul's death is said to have been started by Fred LaBour, who claimed that Paul had died in a car crash in 1966 and that clues to this could be found in the band's music and on their album covers. If played in a certain way, he claims that the words "turn me on, dead man" can be heard in "Revolution 9".

He also claimed to have heard the words "Paul is dead" in the Beatles song "I Am the Walrus".
10. A typical human pregnancy lasts about nine months, but which other mammal has the same gestation period?

Answer: Antelope

Sable antelopes are the one of the few mammals to share the same average length of gestation period with humans--270 days. Some other mammals, such as the gorilla, the harbor porpoise, and the deer, have similar gestation periods. The stripe-faced dunnart, a small mouse-like mammal of Australia, has the shortest gestation period of any mammal, at 11 days on average.
