Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who played Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, in the movie "The Wizard of Oz"?

Answer: Billie Burke

Burke's real name was Mary William Ethelbert Appleton Burke. She was born in 1884 and had an extensive film career with over 80 films to her credit. She experienced the show business world from an early age as she travelled with her father who was a singing clown in the circus! Burke died in 1970.
2. In the song "Billy Boy" (Oh where have you been Billy Boy, Billy Boy? Oh where have you been charming Billy?) what kind of pie is referred to?

Answer: cherry pie

"Can she make a cherry pie, Billy Boy, Billy Boy?" This song is at least a century or two old and there are many variations in other languages. A contemporary song about cherry pie is by the band Warrant and is entitled "Cherry Pie." I must be getting old as I have never heard of the band or the song, which is their best known.

It was banned from Canadian MuchMusic for being sexist (it must have been bad!) and has been used on a videogame. What a difference a few centuries makes!
3. Who played the lead in the 1971 film "Billy Jack?"

Answer: Tom Laughlin

Laughlin has been married to his co-star in this movie, Delores Taylor, since 1956. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in this movie, in the category of Most Promising Newcomer - Female. They have three children.
4. Does anyone remember who the artist was who wrote and recorded the silly song "My Girl Bill?"

Answer: Jim Stafford

"Spiders and Snakes" is the only other song I remember by Stafford, another silly one, but one that I have been known to sing a few lines from, from time to time! Stafford is still performing and he presently (2007) owns and operates a theatre in Missouri. I had forgotten that he was married at one time to Bobbie Gentry (now divorced), another popular singer of the period - remember "Ode to Billy Joe?"
5. What was famous jazz singer Billie Holliday's real name?

Answer: Eleanora Fagan Gough

She was born in Pennsylvania in 1915 and, unfortunately, died quite young at the age of forty-four. She is considered one of the greatest jazz voices of all time. I remember first hearing her music as a teenager with feelings of awe, as I had never heard anything like it.
6. What kind of blues did The Fifth Dimension sing about when they sang "Bill, I love you so, I always will...?"

Answer: Wedding Bell Blues

The song was written by Laura Nyro and I used to love the line "but am I ever gonna see my wedding day" and "Oh, come on Bill, Oh, come on Bill." Nyro wrote a lot of hit songs for others - "Eli's Comin'" for Three Dog Night is one example.
7. What was the name of a wonderful British movie in which a boy from a working class family secretly takes ballet classes, when he is supposed to be taking boxing lessons?

Answer: Billy Elliot

Apparently this has also been turned into a stage musical. It is a delightful film and was nominated for many awards including the Academy Award for Best Actress (Julie Walters). The child star who played the title role, Jamie Bell, has continued to act and appeared in Peter Jackson's "King Kong."
8. Name a book written by Herman Melville that fits into this quiz. (It is a book that he wrote several decades after "Moby Dick.")

Answer: Billy Budd

"Billy Budd" was published posthumously. Like the tale of Moby Dick, it is a story with the sea as its background; it has been adapted into a play, movie and opera. The film cast includes Peter Ustinov, Robert Ryan and Melvyn Douglas, big movie names of the day (1962).
9. Which U.S. president had a brother named Billy who promoted a brand of beer which bore his name (Billy Beer)?

Answer: Jimmy Carter

The following were written on each can of Billy Beer: "Brewed expressly for and with the personal approval of one of America's all-time great beer drinkers" - Billy Carter .
"I had this beer brewed just for me. I think it's the best I've ever tasted. And I've tasted a lot. I think you'll like it, too."
Billy Carter died in 1981, of pancreatic cancer; he was only 51.
10. This Billy is a band that released their first album, "Try Honesty", in 2001?

Answer: Billy Talent

Billy Talent is a Toronto based band. They have been nominated for many awards and have won many, starting with their first album in 2004 winning Junos and MuchMusic awards. They are a band with a social conscience as well - they have a scholarship program available for Canadian students with MS.
