There are a number of versions of this myth. In short, the nymphs were under the auspice of Artemis and they vowed to remain virgins. Zeus disguised himself as Artemis and forced himself upon Callisto. Callisto became pregnant and gave birth to a boy, Arcas, but not before she was turned into a bear, either by Hera, in a jealous rage, or on the orders of Hera.

While Arcas was hunting in the woods he saw a bear rush toward him, not knowing that it was his mother. He drew his bow and arrow to kill the bear.

At this point Zeus intervened and took the arrow from Arcas, then turned him into a bear as well and placed both mother and son safely in the sky where they continue to reside as Ursa Major and Ursa Minor.

'B.J. and the Bear' first aired in 1979 and starred Greg Evigan as Billie Joe McKay, a truck driver with the Bear as his companion. The inspiration for 'The Bear's' name was supposedly Paul 'The Bear' Bryant who had been a longstanding football coach for the University of Alabama.

The monkey's real name was 'Sam' and he was cared for by the Wildlife Animal Way Station in Los Angeles. Unfortunately he passed away in the early 1990's as result of kidney failure.
