Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the largest town that was once the administrative centre of the region?

Answer: Keynsham

Keynsham (pronounced Cane-sham), was named after a fifth century holy woman, St Keyne (Keyna). It has a population of around 15,000 and is located roughly halfway between the cities of Bath and Bristol. A certain notoriety was achieved in the 1960s with Radio Luxembourg spelling the name out as the pronunciation does not make the spelling obvious.
2. What range of hills forms the southern border of the region?

Answer: Mendips

Whilst the northern part of the Mendips is in Wansdyke, now Bath and North East Somerset, the southern side is in Somerset and includes Cheddar Gorge and caves. The southern Cotswolds do cover part of the north-eastern area near Bath and the border with Wiltshire.
3. Which major chocolate manufacturer has a large factory on the edge of Keynsham?

Answer: Cadburys

The factory started as J. S. Fry and Sons when they relocated to Somerdale from central Bristol in 1923. Although Frys had merged with Cadburys in 1919 they continued to use the Frys name until 1981.
4. The southwest of the region contains several reservoir lakes. Which is the largest?

Answer: Chew Valley Lake

Chew Valley Lake is the fifth largest artificial lake in the United Kingdom and is nearly three times the size of Blagdon Lake. It was created in the 1950s when the surrounding land, including the small village of Moreton, was flooded. Roads, hedgerows, and tree stumps can reappear in dry summers when the water level is low.

Blagdon Lake was created when the River Yeo was dammed in the 1890s. The much smaller Chew Magna Lake was created in the 1950s with the damming of Winford Brook. Barrow Tanks, otherwise called Barrow Gurney reservoir, is just over the border in North Somerset.
5. What industry was particularly prominent in the Radstock area in the nineteenth century?

Answer: Coal Mining

Coal mining existed in Radstock and the surrounding area from 1763 until 1973, with over fifty collieries serviced by tramways, railways and canals. The Somerset coal fields were noted for their difficult geology, having shallow and frequently fractured seams.
6. Purnells factory was for many years the major business in Paulton. What type of business was it?

Answer: Printing

In 1839, Charles Dando Purnell "established what was to become Europe's biggest printing firm" (BBC Somerset Online, 2008). At its height, 2000 people were employed there. In 1964 Purnells merged with Hazell Sun to form British Printing Corporation, later to be bought out by Polestar Group. The factory closed in December 2005 with the loss of 400 jobs.
7. St Catherine, a small village near Batheaston, is dominated by St Catherine's Court. Which Hollywood star owned this between 1984 and 2007?

Answer: Jane Seymour

St Catherine's Court is a Tudor mansion, which Jane Seymour bought after filming "Jamaica Inn" there. She spent around three million pounds restoring the property to its former glory. She subsequently rented it out as a film set and recording studio, which have been used by Radiohead and Robbie Williams amongst others.
8. Which canal goes through Bathampton?

Answer: Kennet and Avon

The Kennet and Avon canal linked the River Kennet in Newbury to the River Avon in Bath, a total of 87 miles. The George Inn alongside the canal in Bathampton has been a picturesque and popular place to stop whilst walking or cycling along the canal path.
9. Claverton, a small village in the east of the region, includes Claverton Manor which houses what museum?

Answer: American Museum in Britain

The American Museum in Britain was founded by Dallas Pratt (an American psychiatrist and collector), John Judkyn (a British born antiques dealer, who had become a United States citizen), and Nick Bell Knight (a furniture restorer employed at nearby Freshford Manor). It was opened to the public in 1961.

The grounds include spectacular views over the Limpley Stoke Valley and the River Avon, as well as an arboretum devoted to American trees and shrubs. There is also a unique replica of George Washington's flower garden at Mount Vernon, Virginia.
10. Just a little south of Claverton is Dundas. It is known for what impressive structure?

Answer: Aqueduct

The aqueduct at Dundas is a Grade 1 listed, Bath stone structure built in 1800. It carries the Kennet and Avon Canal over the Avon River from Bath towards Bradford-on-Avon. Dundas also has Brassknocker Basin, which is where the Somerset Coal Canal joins the Kennet and Avon Canal.
