3. Which Nevada city, located near Lake Tahoe, calls itself "The Biggest Little City In the World?"

Answer: Reno

Reno got its start as a railroad town, serving as one of the principal stops on the transcontinental railroad. When gambling was legalized in Nevada in 1931, Reno became the gambling capital of the country. Many people also came to Reno to take advantage of Nevada's liberal divorce laws.

Although now largely eclipsed by Las Vegas, Reno remains a popular tourist destination.

4. What state known for its space program facilities has towns named Venus, Mars, and Jupiter?

5. The 11th-largest U.S. state overall, which state has the highest percentage of its area occupied by water at 41.54%? Bordering four of the five Great Lakes certainly helps.

Answer: Michigan

Michigan narrowly beats Hawaii (41.25%) in its percentage of water area. Interestingly, the name Michigan means 'large lake' in the Ojibwe language which is very fitting since it borders Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, and Lake Saint Clair.

6. Ignoring the state capital, Casper, Laramie, Gillette and Rock Springs are the largest cities in which US state?

Answer: Wyoming

Wyoming is the least-populated state in the U.S., and although its capital, Cheyenne, is also its largest city, it is still one of the smaller state capitals in the country with less than 60,000 (2010 Census) living there. Casper, nicknamed "Oil City" is only slightly smaller with a population of 55,000. Laramie, home to the University of Wyoming, is the state's largest city even though its 2010 Census population was only just over 30,000.

7. This river in Nebraska has been described as "a mile wide and an inch deep". What river am I referring to?

Answer: Platte River

Early settlers and travelers noted this description of the river in their diaries and journals. Today the river is no longer a mile wide or an inch deep due to dredging new routes for the river.

8. I intend to drive east from Munich in Germany to the Slovakian capital Bratislava by the shortest route possible. Which country will I have to pass through to get there?

Answer: Austria

The journey from Munich to Bratislava is a drive I have undertaken and it's a good one. Roughly 530 kilometers, it took me best part of half a day on good fast roads and through some beautiful countryside. I did stop at the Austrian cities of Linz, Steyr and the capital Vienna. Austria is predominantly mountainous being located in the Alps.

The cities whilst modern, with great bars and restaurants, are still filled with character and have a traditional feel about them. Around 90% of Austrians speak German as their native tongue. Roman Catholicism is the principal religion.

9. Which is the shortest river in New Zealand?

Answer: Turanganui

The Turanganui river is the shortest in New Zealand and is only 0.9 kilometres or 0.56 miles long. It is formed where the Waimata and Taruheru rivers meet in the city of Gisborne in the northeastern part of North Island. From there the tidal Turanganui river flows through part of Gisborne to join the Pacific Ocean at Poverty Bay's northern end. Waikato is the longest river in New Zealand and Murray is the longest single river in Australia, while Orinoco is a long river in Venezuela and Colombia.
