Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
The Iberian Peninsula is a roughly square-shaped landmass located in southwestern Europe, eparated from the rest of the continent by the Pyrenees mountain range, which marks the border between France and Spain. Covering an area of about 583,254 km² (225,196 sq mi), it is the second-largest peninsula in Europe after the Scandinavian Peninsula. Largely mountainous, the Iberian Peninsula is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, west and southwest, and the Mediterranean Sea to the east and southeast. The continental territories of Portugal and Spain are located on the Iberian Peninsula, as well as a small part of the French department of Pyrenées-Orientales, the microstate of Andorra, and the British overseas territory of Gibraltar.
The name Iberia comes from the Ebro River. Found in north and northeastern Spain, it flows for 930 km ((580 mi) from its headwaters in the Cantabrian Mountains, passing through the city of Zaragoza (Aragon); it then empties in the Mediterranean Sea, forming a large delta. The Guadalquivir (from the Arabic for "the great river) flows through southern Spain in a westward direction into the Gulf of Cádiz (Atlantic Ocean). With a length of 657 km (408 mi), it is Spain's only major navigable river, though only from Seville (which is the main port on the river) to its mouth. Another major city of Andalusía, Córdoba, lies along the river's course. The peninsula's longest river at 1,007 km (626 mi), the Tagus rises in central Spain, east of Madrid, and flows westward through the historic city of Toledo - emptying into the Atlantic Ocean in Lisbon, Portugal's capital.
Located in Galicia, in northwestern Spain, Cape Finisterre is a small, rocky peninsula on the Atlantic coast that in ancient times was believed to be the end of the known world - hence its name (from Latin "finis terrae", end of the Earth). It is also the final destination of the iconic pilgrimage route known as the Way of St James. Though Cape Finisterre was also long regarded as the westernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula, this distinction goes instead to Cabo da Roca, located near the town of Sintra in Portugal - also the westernmost point of continental Europe and the whole of the Eurasian landmass. Both Cape Finisterre and Cabo da Roca are known for their prominent lighthouses; the Cabo da Roca lighthouse at sunset is shown in the quiz's cover photo. Punta de Tarifa (Tarifa Point) is the southernmost point of both the Iberian peninsula and continental Europe. Named after the commander who led the Arab conquest of Hispania, it lies in Andalusia, on the Atlantic end of the Straits of Gibraltar.
Located in the Sierra Nevada range of southern Spain, Mulhacén is named after a Muslim ruler of Granada. Standing at an elevation of 3,479 m (11,414 ft), it is the highest mountain in the Iberian Peninsula, and also in Southern Europe outside of the Alps. Spain's third-highest mountain, Pico Aneto is also the highest mountain in the Pyrenees. Reaching a height of 3,404 m (11,168 ft), it lies roughly in the centre of the range, about 6 km (4 mi) south of the border between Spain and France. Spain's highest mountain, however, is the active volcano Teide, which is located in the Canary Islands, on the island of Tenerife.
Both popular tourist destinations on the Mediterranean Sea, the Costa Brava and the Costa del Sol lie at opposite ends of continental Spain. The Costa Brava ("wild coast") is a coastal area located in northeastern Spain, in the province of Girona (Catalonia). Along with developed tourist resorts with plenty of hotels and restaurants, the area offers stretches of rugged coastline and a rich cultural heritage. Named for its year-round sunny climate, the Costa del Sol ("coast of the sun") is located in Andalusia, and comprises the coastline of the province of Málaga, with well-known seaside resorts such as Marbella and Torremolinos.
Lake Sanabria ("Lago de Sanabria" in Spanish), in the western Spanish province of Zamora (Castile and León), is the largest lake in the Iberian Peninsula. A glacial lake, with a surface area of 3.48 km² (1.34 sq mi), it lies at an elevation of 1,018 m (3,340 ft) above sea level.
Located in the southeastern province of Almería (Andalusia), the Tabernas Desert has the distinction of being Europe's only true desert. Covering an area of 280 km² (110 sq mi), it has a climate characterized by little rainfall and sparse, shrubby vegetation. Due to its high elevation, however, its average summer temperatures are not excessive. Since the 1950s the Tabernas Desert has become internationally renowned as a setting for films and TV series.
Of the six incorrect options, Cape Agulhas (Cape of Needles) is the southernmost point of the African continent; the Brazos River flows through the US state of Texas; Chimborazo, a dormant stratovolcano, is the highest mountain in Ecuador; the Atacama Desert is located in southern Peru and northern Chile; Lake Maracaibo is located in northwestern Venezuela; the Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast) is found in northeastern Sardinia (Italy).
