Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

When the Mayflower departed from England and landed in what is now Massachusetts in 1620, the Pilgrims who took the journey to the New World did so with the hope for freedom from the Church of England. In what would become Provincetown Harbor, the 101 on board (along with thirty crew members) devised the document that would become the Mayflower Compact, signing the papers with forty-one signatures-- all the men amongst the passengers.

Though the original document is lost to time, many copies of it were made due to its importance in separating England from its departing faction. The Mayflower Compact was, effectively, one of the earliest constitutional documents of what would become, after another hundred and fifty years, the United States of America. It would also be repealed a couple of times with the latter instance, in 1691, leading to a replacement text, specifically the Massachusetts Charter, the effects of which, down the line, led to great dissatisfaction from colonists and the spurring of the Boston Tea Party.

Amongst the signatories of the document were:
- John Carver, who is believed to have written the document and who was its first signer (and he would later become the first Governor of Plymouth Colony).
- William Bradford, who was twice the President of the United Colonies of New England.
- Captain Myles Standish, who became the first military adviser for the Pilgrims, helping create a more defensive colony.
- William Brewster, who became the elder of the first Plymouth Church.
- Stephen Hopkins, who had previously been to the New World with Capt. John Smith (of the expedition that is believed to have encountered Pocahontas) and who had also been shipwrecked in Bermuda for nine months from 1609-1610.
