The House of Burgesses was the first representative government in the colonies. It was started in 1619 under the authorization of the London Company, and allowed the settlers to meet and represent themselves.

The English claimed many small West Indian islands as their own in the 1600s, and gained the very large prize of Jamaica in 1655.
