Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Separatists who would travel on the Mayflower lived in Holland for 12 years. Besides religious freedom, what was a reason they decided to leave?

Answer: Their children were assimilating into the Dutch culture.

The Separatists were afraid they were losing their English culture as their children spoke more Dutch than English and learned Dutch customs as their way of doing things.
2. Which of the following animals were known to be on the Mayflower?

Answer: chickens

Accounts of the voyage tell us there were chickens, a goat, and two dogs.
3. What did the Pilgrims do to pass the time during the voyage?

Answer: Read the Bible and sang hymns

When they weren't seasick, the Pilgrims practiced activities of their faith. The ship was crowded and there was not enough water for washing or bathing.
4. When the Mayflower landed first at Provincetown, what did the women go ashore to do?

Answer: launder their clothes

There was concern for the safety of the passengers, since this was an unknown land, with evidence of previous occupation. The women and children were not allowed to stray away from the shore. They washed the clothes and then returned to the Mayflower.
5. Who was the Pilgrim military leader?

Answer: Myles Standish

Myles Standish had been a soldier while living in Holland. Paul Revere, Nathaniel Greene, and George Washington were all Revolutionary War leaders.
6. What was the primary occupation of the Pilgrims when they lived in Holland?

Answer: Tradesmen

The Pilgrims included a carpenter, a cooper, merchants, a doctor and other middle class occupations. They expected to farm and fish in New England.
7. About half of the passengers died the first winter in Plymouth. How many died the second winter?

Answer: 0

A second ship arrived in November 1621, adding to the colony, but bringing little food or supplies. The second winter was not as harsh as the first winter had been, and the 86 Pilgrims survived it without any deaths.
8. Who was the Chief of the Wampanoag, known as Protector and Preserver of the Pilgrims?

Answer: Massasoit

Massasoit entered into a peace agreement with the Pilgrims March 22, 1621. He honored this agreement until his death in 1661. Samoset was from Maine and met the Pilgrims briefly in 1621. Squanto signed the 1621 peace agreement, lived with the Pilgrims, but died in 1622. Powhattan was a Jamestown tribal leader.
9. What was the primary method of transportation for the Pilgrims as the colony began to grow and expand to other areas?

Answer: Walking

Horses and oxen did not arrive in the colony for many years. Occasionally, travel would be made by shallop, but this was not common.
10. The Pilgrim policy for gaining land was to purchase the land from the Indians. How did they pay for it?

Answer: With tools and trinkets

Tools and trinkets (wampum) were more useful than anything else that was available. Cash and horses were not available. The Indians had their own crops and fish.
