Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is a chicken soup?

Answer: Aguadito

Also known as aguadito de pollo, this is a traditional Peruvian chicken soup. The soup normally has various vegetables, coriander (cilantro) gets mentioned frequently, and may be spiced to give it some heat. As for the image clue: 'agua' is Spanish for 'water' hence the bottles of water, the second bottle gives 'ditto' as a hint for 'dito'.
2. One of these is a potato dish. Which is it?

Answer: Aloo tikki

Also known as aloo ki tikkia, this potato snack is from the Indian subcontinent. 'Aloo', meaning 'potato' in Hindu-Urdu, is combined with peas and curry spices to make a small cutlet or croquette (the 'tikki' part) and served with sauces such as mint, tamarind and yoghurt. For the image clue, the metronome makes a ticking sound ('tikki') which, sitting in a bathroom, combines to hint at the name.
3. Which is the meat stew?

Answer: Armenian kashlama

A meat stew, kashlama is Armenian in origin. Made with beef, lamb, mutton or chicken, it is boiled and may include vegetables, but not necessarily. The broth used to cook the meat is often used for other dishes. As for the image, if you know your camelids, the animal with a mouth full of cash is a llama.

It is an AI-generated image so no animals were encouraged to eat inedible matter for the image.
4. If you wanted a traditional fish soup, which is the dish to pick?

Answer: Bouillabaisse

It is the Provençal region of France that is the origin of this fish soup. The port city of Marseille gets the credit. The name is a compound of words meaning to boil and to simmer. The original recipe used fish that the fishermen were unable to sell, typically bony fish. This and the Provençal herbs and spices used sets it apart from other fish soups. The image clue shows a bit of a bass guitar in a bowl.
5. What pastry-encased steak dish has been linked the British soldier Arthur Wellesley?

Answer: Beef Wellington

A steak dish found on British menus, it consists of beef steak coated in pâté and minced mushrooms, which is then wrapped in pastry before being baked. It is not clear where the Wellington part of the name comes from. It is usually assumed to be after Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington, of the Napoleonic era however written recipes don't appear until the end of the 19th century. Probably nothing to do with the wellingtons (or gumboots as they are called here) shown in the image clue.
6. If wanting dessert, which one features rice balls?

Answer: Bilo-bilo

Also known as pinaltok, bilo-bilo is a Filipino dessert dish. It is made with small glutinous rice balls in coconut milk and sugar. Jackfruit or other starchy items such as tapioca or sweet potato are added. Traditionally eaten hot, some prefer it cold. The name 'bilo-bilo' refers to the round shape of the sticky rice balls. The image clue is of a billowing towel.
7. Which of the following is also a form of preserved food?

Answer: Biltong

A type of air-dried cured meat with a South African origin, biltong is also popular in other countries in south Africa. Different types of meat are used including game meats such as ostrich. Although both are spiced, it differs from beef jerky in that jerky is heat-treated.

The Afrikaans word 'bil' means 'buttock' whilst 'tong' means 'strip' or 'tongue'. The image clue shows a pair of tongs on a poster or bill.
8. From Mexico, which is the meat dish?

Answer: Birria

Birria comes from western Mexico and is a regional variant of the dish barbacoa. Typically made with goat, it can also be made with beef or lamb. It is marinated before being cooked in a beer broth. The image clue is of a burr.
9. If you wanted a dessert with chocolate in it, which should you choose?

Answer: Black forest gateau

In the US the Black Forest gateau is a chocolate and cream cake with a cherry filling between the sponge cake layers. The equivalent in Germany, home of the Black Forest, is the Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte ('Black Forest cherry torte'). The German version is required by German law to include Kirschwasser, an alcoholic spirit made from morello cherries.

The image clue shows a gate in front of water ('eau' in French) in front of a bit of forest, perhaps even the Black Forest.
10. Which is the Afrikaans dish?

Answer: Bobotie

Another South African dish, this is minced meat baked with a topping. The toppings usually involve egg and milk. There are variants such as Leipoldt's recipe or Tulleken's recipe and a suggestion that it is a variant of an ancient Roman recipe. The meaning of the Afrikaans name is unclear.

The image clue is a bit obscure as well. Bobo was originally a Dutch children's magazine which features a blue rabbit called Bobo. An Indonesian version of the magazine has been going for over 50 years. The most helpful bit of the clue perhaps is the tie he is wearing.
