Root (Board Game) [4] Trivia Quiz

"Root" is a 2018 board game designed by Cole Wehrle, illustrated by Kyle Ferrin, and published by Leder Games. This is my fourth quiz about this cute asymmetrical war game. Note, this quiz is only about the base game, and does not include expansions.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The cards Command Warren (may battle during daylight) and Cobbler (may move during evening) belong to which suit?

Answer: Rabbit

Each of the three suits has a different focus. The mice cards are about intelligence, with Scouting Party preventing the use of Ambush cards, and Codebreakers letting players look at their opponents' hands. The rabbit cards are about logistics. Apart from Command Warren and Cobbler, they also have Better Burrow Bank, which lets them and another player each draw a card.

The fox cards are about economy, with Stand and Deliver letting players steal cards from each other, and Tax Collector letting them trade a warrior for a card.

The Bird cards generally help in battle, adding extra hits, or preventing some hits.
2. What does the Keep token do for the Marquise de Cat?

Answer: Prevents enemy pieces from being placed in its clearing

The keep prevents the placement of any opponent buildings or tokens, or the recruitment of warriors. For example, the Woodland Alliance cannot place a sympathy token in the keep's clearing, even with their Organize action (replace a warrior with a sympathy token).

This does not stop players from moving warriors into the clearing from adjacent clearings, and it is possible for other players to rule the clearing if they get enough warriors in.

The keep is also where fallen warriors are reconstituted when using the Field Hospital ability.
3. Which Marquise de Cat action is restricted to once per turn?

Answer: Recruit

The Marquise de Cat may build as many buildings as they have the lumber and open slots for, and may initiate as many battles as they want in clearings with enemy pieces, and may march their warriors around to their heart's content (respecting move rules), but they may only recruit once per turn.

The recruit action adds a warrior from the supply at each recruiter building. If this action was not limited, the cats would be able to field a massive army too quickly for the other factions to counter.
4. What happens if the Eyrie Dynasties depose all four of their leaders?

Answer: All four leaders become available again

All four leaders are refreshed and a new one is selected just like the start of the game. While this might not seem too bad, if the Eyrie have gone into turmoil four times in a game, they're probably already having a bad time.
5. The Eyrie Dynasties carry out actions according to their Royal Decree. What's the order of the Royal Decree?

Answer: Recruit, Move, Battle, Build

The order of the decree is always set, and each component of the decree must be completed before moving on to the next part. Within an individual part of the decree (e.g. move), the actions can be completed in any order. If a fox card was added to the move decree one turn, and a rabbit card the next, the rabbit move action could be performed before the fox move.

But all move actions would have to be completed before any battle actions took place.
6. What does an Eyrie Dynasties player do if they run out of warriors in their supply during their recruit decree?

Answer: They enter turmoil

The Eyrie must strictly perform every action in the decree exactly. When the Eyrie enter turmoil, they discard all the cards in their decree, select a new leader, and immediately move to the end of their turn. This can be devastating when it occurs during the recruit decree because that means all the move, battle, and build actions are skipped.
7. Apart from the first token, the Woodland Alliance can only spread Sympathy to clearings adjacent those with existing sympathy tokens.

Answer: True

The Woodland Alliance start the game with no pieces on the board. They can place their first sympathy token anywhere (discarding a card matching the suit of the clearing from their supporters). After that, all new Sympathy tokens must be placed in adjacent clearings. The other players can limit where the Alliance can spread by destroying specific tokens. If all are removed, then the Alliance can again spread Sympathy anywhere.

The Organize action, where they replace a warrior with a sympathy token, does not have this limitation.
8. The Vagabond can explore ruins to clear building slots. What happens when there is no Vagabond in the game?

Answer: The building slots are permanently blocked

The four ruins tokens are just left on the board, forever taking up a building slot. The third major expansion for "Root," the "Marauder Expansion" released in 2022, introduced a new faction that could interact with ruins tiles: the Lord of the Hundreds.
9. Which Vagabond character can get three hammers (letting them craft high level cards like Favors)?

Answer: Tinker (can take cards from the discard pile)

There is one hammer that can be crafted by any player, and another hammer is one of the four ruins tiles. The only third hammer is one that the Vagabond starts with, and the only character that starts with one (in the base game) is the Tinker. The Tinker has a reputation as being a particularly troubling Vagabond. It's the only one that can craft Favor cards (remove all enemy pieces from all clearings matching the suit of the Favor card). This is paired with its special ability to take any card out of the discard pile, so as soon as a Favor card is discarded, the Tinker can easily get it instead of having to randomly draw it.

"The Vagabond Pack" was a mini expansion released in 2020 that came with three new Vagabond cards. The new Adventurer character from the pack also starts with a hammer.
10. The Favor of the Mice will remove all enemy pieces in all mouse clearings. There are similar cards for the other suits. What does Favor of the Birds do?

Answer: There is no such card

There is a bird Dominance card (rule clearings on opposite corners), and bird Ambush cards (which can be used in any clearing), but the is no Favor of the Birds card; only the three non-wild suits. One of the mini expansions for "Root" is the "Exiles and Partisans" deck, which replaces the original deck of cards.

Many players feel it is a superior deck to play with, partially because there are no Favor cards in it.
