2. You deal the cards. Your hand contains the following: AH-3H-7D-JS-QC-QD. You decide to throw the AH and 3H to your crib. Once I've thrown my cards, I cut the deck, and you turn over a 7H. I start the pegging, playing a 4C. You follow with a 7D. My next card is a 2D. You play a JS. I follow with a 6H, giving me one point for the go. You lead the next round with a QC. I play a 5S, giving me two points for the 15. You play your last card, the QD, and get one point for the last card. Now, we count our hands. My hand is 2D-4C-5S-6H. Together with the starter card (7H), how many points does my hand hold?

I smile an evil smile, and you have a sinking feeling in your gut. You start the pegging this time with the 8H. I follow with the KS, which you follow with your 8D. I play a 5S, and peg 2 for the 31. You shake your head, and lead the second round with a 2D. I play a JD. You play your last card, the 5D, and I play my last card, a JH, pegging one for the last card. As the pone (which is the nondealer), you get to count your hand first. With 2D-5D-8D-8H, and the QH starter card, what do you have in your hand?

Now it's your turn to smile that evil smile. I start the pegging, leading a 7H. You play your JS, which I immediately pair with JC. With the go, I peg 3 points there. Your turn to lead, and you choose KS. I play 8C, and you follow with KD, pegging 1 for the go. I play my last card, 7S, and you play yours, QH, pegging one more for the last card. I play 7C for 15, and 2 points. You follow that with 9C (3 points for a run of 3). I play 6D, and peg 5 - 4 for the run, 1 for the go. We play out the next round, 2S (you), 6C (me), 5S (you), and 8S (me, 1 for the go.) You count your hand first, and it holds 2S-5S-8H-9C. With the 7H cut, what did you get?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the cut for deal, one of us cut a 2 of spades (2S), and the other cut a 9 of clubs (9C). Since you have first deal, which card did you cut?

Answer: 2S

According to the official rules of cribbage (which you can check out yourself at www.cribbage.org), the low card to be cut gets first deal.

Answer: 8

I have 15 for 2 (4C-5S-6H), 4 (2D-6H-7H), and a run of 4 (4C-5S-6H-7H) for 8.
3. Now, you count your hand (7D-JS-QC-QD, 7H starter card). How many points do you hold?

Answer: 4

You have two pairs at two points each (7D-7H, QC-QD) for 4.
4. Because you dealt, you get to count the crib as well. There, you have AH-3H-8H-JC, with the 7H starter card. What's the count?

Answer: 2

All you have is one 15 (7H-8H) for 2. So, after one hand, the score is 11-7, with me in the lead.
5. Hand #2, and my deal. You look at your cards and see AH-2D-5D-8D-8H-10C. You think for a moment, and decide to throw the 10C and AH into my crib. You cut the cards and I turn over a QH.

Answer: 8

You have 15 for 2 (2D-5D-8D), 4 (2D-5D-8H), and 6 (5D-QH), as well as a pair of 8s for 2 more, making your total 8.
6. I show you my hand, 5S-JH-JD-KS. With the QH starter, what does that give me for this hand?

Answer: 17

Now you see why I was smiling like that. I have fifteen for 2 (5S-JH), 4 (5S-JD), 6 (5S-QH), and 8 (5S-KS). On top of that, I have a double run of three (two sets of J-Q-K and a pair of Js) for 8, and nobs (my JH is the same suit as the cut card, QH) for 1 more. That gives me 17.
7. My crib contains AH-7D-7H-10C. How many can I peg for that hand (including the QH starter)?

Answer: 4

I have 15 for 2 (AH-7D-7H), and a pair of 7s for 2 more. That gives me 4. While not as exciting as my hand, it does make the score 35-15, with me firmly in the lead. But, never fear! It's still early!
8. On to Hand #3, your deal. You pick up your cards, and see 2S-7D-JS-QH-KD-KS. You decide (after very little thought) to throw the 2 and 7 to your crib. I cut the cards and you turn over a QD. I, as the pone, count first. I'm holding 7S-7H-8C-JC, with the QD starter. How many points is that?

Answer: 6

I have 15 for 2 (7S-8C) and 4 (7H-8C). With my pair of 7s for 2, that gives me 6.
9. Grinning knowingly, you show me your hand, JS-QH-KD-KS, with the QD starter. I shake my head as I realize how many points you just scored. How many?

Answer: 16

You have a double-double run of 3. That's four sets of J-Q-K for 3 points each, and 2 each for the pair of Qs and the pair of Ks. 3+3+3+3+2+2=16. Nice hand.
10. Your smug smile vanishes as you look in your crib, where you find 2H-2S-7D-KC. With the QD starter, how many points in your crib?

Answer: 2

The pair of 2s is all you have, for 2 points. But you gained some ground on me that hand, bringing the score to 44-35, with me clinging to the lead.
11. Hand #4, my deal. Your hand holds 3C-4S-5H-6S-JH-QS. You decide to throw the J and the Q to my crib. You cut the cards, and I turn over 8S. You start the pegging with 4S. I play KH on that. You follow with 6S. I play QD. With the count at 30, you can't go, so I play AS and peg two for the 31 count. You lead the second round with 3C. I play my last card, QH, so you finish it off with 5H, and peg 1 for the last card. You count first. Your hand is 3C-4S-5H-6S. With the 8S starter card, you score...

Answer: 8

You have 15 for 2 (3C-4S-8S) and 4 (4S-5H-6S). The run of 4 (3C-4S-5H-6S) gives you a total of 8 for this hand.
12. My hand is AS-QD-QH-KH. With the 8S starter, I score...

Answer: 2

The pair of Qs is all I have as the ace only plays low in runs. If only I had cut a J or a 5...
13. I turn over my crib, exposing 6D-7S-JH-QS, 8S starter. How many points does this hand score for me?

Answer: 5

I have 15 for 2 (7S-8S), and a run of 3 (6D-7S-8S) for a total of 5. So after a really lousy hand and crib, I maintain my 9 point lead, 53-44.
14. Hand #5, your deal. Your hand looks pretty good, 2H-2S-5C-10D-KD-KS. You throw the pair of 2s because it's your crib. I cut the cards, you turn over 5D. I start the pegging with 2D. You follow it up with 10D. I play 6S, which you follow with KD. That's a go for you, so you peg 1. I start again, this time with 7C. You play KS, I play 7D, you play 5C and score one more for the last card. My hand consists of 2D-6S-7D-7C, and the 5D starter. This hands scores...

Answer: 12

I have 15 for 2 (2D-6S-7D) and 4 (2D-6S-7C), as well as a double run of 3 (two sets of 5-6-7, and a pair of 7s) for 8 more. That gives me 12.
15. You got a really nice cut with that 5D starter card. Your hand has 5C-10D-KD-KS. What did you score with it?

Answer: 16

You got 15 for 2 (10D-5C), 4 (10D-5D), 6 (KD-5C), 8 (KD-5D), 10 (KS-5C), and 12 (KD-5D). You also got two pairs (5s and Ks) for 4 more, giving you 16. Nice hand.
16. Your crib holds 2H-2S-9S-QS. With the 5D starter card, what did you score?

Answer: 4

You have 15 for 2 (QS-5D), and a pair of 2s for 4. After 5 hands, you've taken the lead, 66-65.
17. Hand #6, my deal. Your hand consists of AC-5S-5H-9C-10H-KC. You throw the A and the 9. You cut the cards and I turn over QH. Your turn to start the pegging. You lead your 10H. I pair it with 10D for 2. You play your KC and peg 1 for the go. I lead the next round with 10C. You make 15 with 5H, scoring 2. We keep playing - I play 9D, you the 5S, scoring 1 for the go. I get the last card with JH, scoring 1. You count your hand first, 5S-5H-10H-KC with the QH starter. What's your score for this hand?

Answer: 14

You have 15 for 2 (10H-5H), 4 (10H-5S), 6 (QH-5H), 8 (QH-5S), 10 (KC-5H), and 12 (KC-5S). You also got a pair of 5s for 2 more, bringing the total to 14.
18. My hand is 9D-10C-10D-JH. With the QH cut, what did I score?

Answer: 11

I got a double run of 4 (two sets of 9-10-J-Q and a pair of 10s) for 10. I also got 1 for nobs (my JH matches the QH suit), giving me a grand total of 11.
19. My crib is AC-2H-8D-9C. With the QH starter, how many points does that score?

Answer: 0

Zero. Zilch. Nada. Goose egg. Nothing. You managed to extend your lead after that hand to 79-84. (By the way, I have been informed that a zero hand is also known as a nineteen hand, seeing as nineteen is the only score between 0 and 24 that it is impossible to score in cribbage. However, since you don't actually score those 19 points, that would be an incorrect answer.)
20. On to Hand #7, your deal. The cards you deal to yourself are AH-2S-7D-8S-KC-KS. It's your crib, and you throw the A and the 2. I cut the cards, you turn over a 4D. It's my turn to start the pegging, and I lead with a 7C. You make 15 with 8S, scoring 2. I play my 9C, making a run of 3 for 3 points. You play your 7D, making 31 for 2 and a run of 3 for 5. I start again with 8C. You respond with your KS. I play 3C, and you make 31 with KC, for 2. I count first. My hand is 3C-7C-8C-9C. With the 4D starter, that makes...

Answer: 11

I have 15 for 2 (7C-8C) and 4 (3C-4D-8C). I have a run of 3 (7-8-9) for 7, and the flush of four clubs in my hand makes 11.
21. Your hand contains 7D-8S-KC-KS. With the 4D starter, what does this get you?

Answer: 4

You have 15 for 2 (7D-8S), and a pair of Ks for 4.
22. When you turn over your crib, you find AH-2S-4S-10H. With the 4D starter, that gives you...

Answer: 6

You have 15 for 2 (AH-4S-10H) and 4 (AH-10H-4D), as well as a pair of 4s for 6. Now, after 7 hands, you lead 103-93. You need 18 to win, I need 28.
23. Hand #8, my deal. You decide to throw the J and Q from a 2S-5S-8H-9C-JC-QD hand. You cut the cards, I turn over 7H. I giggle. You flinch. You lead off the pegging with 8H.

Answer: 7

You got 15 for 2 (7H-8H) and 4 (2S-5S-8H), and a run of 3 (7-8-9) for 7. You still lead, 113-101.
24. I got a GREAT cut. My hand, 6C-6D-7C-8S, along with the 7H cut, gives me how many?

Answer: 20

I got 15 for 2 (7C-8S) and 4 (7H-8S), AS WELL AS a double-double run of three (four sets of 6-7-8, a pair of 6s and a pair of 7s) for 20. That's all folks. 121-113. I win. Thanks for playing, we have some lovely parting gifts. It's a good thing, too, because my crib (AD-2D-JC-QD) had nothing in it.
25. There's no reason to look in my crib (if you didn't keep score yourself, you won't know why until you read the interesting information). So, I'll end this quiz on one final question. What is the cribbage term for claiming points that your opponent failed to peg?

Answer: Muggins

Nibs is when the starter card is a J, giving the dealer two points. A skunk is when you or your opponent wins by 31 or more points (a double skunk is 61 or more). A street is one of the divisions of the board - holes 1-30 is first street, 31-60 is second, 61-90 is third, and 91-120 is fourth. If anybody out there can claim muggins on me, or if you have different ideas on how to play the hands, let me know. I'm far from a professional cribbage enthusiast and appreciate other strategies and opinions. Hope you enjoyed the game. We must do this again sometime.
