A braai is a barbecue. When invited to a bring and braai you are supposed to take along your own choice of meat, chicken, etc. plus a salad or dessert to be shared.
2. A few days later another neighbour came around with a dish of "bobotie" as a welcoming gift. What is bobotie?

Answer: A dish of savoury mince with an egg-based topping

Bobotie is a traditional South African dish made with savoury mince and topped with egg custard type topping. It is believed to have originated from the Dutch settlers. The mince is usually curried, but there are many variations, all of which are delicious.

Answer: A mischievious dwarf like spirit

A tokoloshe is well known in South African mythology. It is very mischievous and invisible. Witch Doctors are usually called in to remove the tokoloshe, although exorcisms have also been performed successfully. The presence of a tokoloshe is seemed to be similar to that of a poltergeist, with it behaving in a similar fashion.

This confused me a lot, as in England we know traffic signals as traffic lights. The first time I heard the term robot I started looking around expecting to see some kind of machine in the road.

Answer: He was suffering from a hangover

When someone has a babbelas they are suffering from a hangover, usually a severe one where you look and feel terrible, with a headache, puffy eyes, etc. Many people say the only cure is to have another drink.
6. As a soccer fan I was invited to attend a soccer match. My friend gave me a vuvuzela as a gift. What would I do with it?

Answer: Blow it

A vuvuzela is a long plastic horn that most South African soccer fans take along to games. They became well known in the 2010 FIFA World Cup for the noise that they make.
7. I heard my neighbour screaming and when I asked what was wrong she told me there was a "gogga" in her kitchen. What made her scream?

Answer: A bug

Gogga is a word used for any bug such as a spider or cockroach.
8. Planning a day trip I was told not to forget to pack some "padkos". What is "padkos"?

Answer: Something to eat

Padkos comes from the Afrikaans words pad - meaning road and kos - meaning food. On a long journey a picnic basket is usually packed and filled with sandwiches, fruit, chips and juice or cool drink.
9. My domestic worker told me that her husband is a real "mampara". What was she telling me?

Answer: That he is a fool

A mampara is a person who is seen to do something foolish. The word mampara originates from the Sotho language, one of 11 official languages in South Africa.
10. Now that this quiz is over I am going to settle down and watch tv with some "rooibos". What am I going to be doing?

Answer: Having a cup of tea

Rooibos is a very popular South African tea. It has good health benefits, and is included in many health and beauty products.
