Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
Shangti (Shangdi or simply Di) was the chief god of Chinese mythology, known as the "Lord Above". Believed to be the ancestor of all Chinese, he was also called The Jade Emperor, amongst other titles. During the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BCE) he was thought of as a deified king who had ruled long before. In modern times, the term has come to be used to refer to a singular deity rather than one amongst many.
Guanyin (Guan Yin) was the goddess of mercy and patron goddess of seamen. Her origin was in India, as the product of the tears of Avalokitesvara, a compassionate god, and brought to China via the Silk Road.
Yan Wang (Yang Wang) was the god of death and ruler of Hell. As such he was a god to be feared.
Nuwa (Nu Wa) and her husband/brother Fuxi were often mentioned together and usually depicted as half serpents (or dragons). Nuwa was credited with the creation of humans and animals.
Caishen was likely to be quite popular, as he was one of the gods of money and wealth, though he made people prove themselves worthy of his generosity.
Niu Lang and Zhi Nu were star-crossed lovers, revered as the god and goddess of love, whose legend gave an account of the formation of the Milky Way.
Fu-Shen was the god of happiness and fortune, while Hou-Ji was a god of agriculture (particularly millet).
Guan Gong (Guandi) was the god of war, whose face was said to have turned red when he was about to slay his enemies. He was very popular due to his power over evil spirits and demons.
The incorrect choices are all gods from Japanese mythology.
