Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is another name for deadly nightshade?

Answer: Belladonna

Belladonna (Atropa belladonna), or deadly nightshade as it is also known, is a toxic plant that grows throughout Europe, Northern Africa, and Western Asia. It has also naturalized as an invasive species in North America. Eating any of the leaves, flowers, or berries on this plant can cause hallucinations, delirium, or death. Even brushing bare skin on the plant can cause rashes.

It is best to avoid the plant if possible, or wear gloves if removing it is necessary.
2. Who is responsible for hairstyling, facials, and fingernail treatments such as manicures and polish?

Answer: Beautician

Beauticians receive training in a wide variety of beauty treatments. These include hair styling, skin care treatments such as facials and waxing, manicures, and pedicures. Licenses are required for these services in some areas. In other parts of the world, they are considered low-risk activities so beauticians do not need a license to practice. That said, if you are going to a beautician, you should look around to ensure that they are engaging in safe practices such as using clean combs and sterilizing manicure/pedicure tools between clients.
3. What kind of dancers are in "The Nutcracker"?

Answer: Ballerinas

The term "ballerina" is Italian, and was historically given to the principal female dancer in a ballet troop. Male ballet dancers who were the principal dancers were known as "ballerinos" in Italian. Today, non-gendered terminology is used by most ballet troops, with "principal dancer" taking over from "ballerina" or "ballerino".
4. What is the opening for a shirt fastener called?

Answer: Buttonhole

It is known that buttonholes were used in Germany in the 1200s, but some historians believe that the Ancient Persians used them long before that. Buttonholes are simply a cut in the fabric that is reinforced to avoid tearing. They are sized to be about the same size as the button. This allows the button to pass through, but held securely to keep clothing closed.
5. What is a person who can read and write in two languages?

Answer: Biliterate

A person who can speak two language is someone who is bilingual (nine letters, so not an answer for this quiz) or a bilinguist (only speaking two languages). A person who is able to read and write in two languages is biliterate. A person who is biliterate is typically considered bilingual, but a person who is bilingual is not necessarily biliterate if they are unable to read and write the second language.
6. What is a gem that represents when you were born?

Answer: Birthstone

Josephus, a historian in the 1st century, seems to be the original author of a list of birth stones. He referred to the twelve stones in the breast plate of Aaron as mentioned in the book of Exodus in the Bible. They were supposed to represent the twelve tribes of Israel, but Josephus suggested that the stones were also connected to the twelve months of the year and the twelve signs of the zodiac. Things have changed over the years, and now, the gems that are identified as birthstones are no longer associated with Aaron's breastplate.

In 1912, a group of jewellers developed a list of birthstones that has mainly been used for marketing purposes ever since. It is reviewed and updated every now and then.
7. What is a delicious fruit, similar to a raspberry, but dark purple?

Answer: Blackberry

Like raspberries, blackberries grow on thorny vines in gardens and hedgerows. They ripen from late June through August in most areas. They can be served raw, over ice cream, baked in cakes or muffins, or any other way you'd use raspberries. I love making blackberry jam or jelly too!
8. What are weapons or tools used by some Aboriginal Australian people for hunting?

Answer: Boomerangs

Boomerangs are flat tools, traditionally made of wood or bone. There are two types of boomerangs - the returning boomerang and the non-returning boomerang. The returning boomerang is made in such a way that it's aerodynamics cause it to return to the thrower.

The non-returning boomerang is typically heavier, doesn't return to the thrower, and is designed to be thrown at birds and small animals that are hunted. Despite the fact that many think boomerangs have only been used by Aboriginal Australians, examples of boomerang-type weapons and tools have also been found in areas such as ancient Europe, Egypt, and North America.
9. What type of dolphin fits with this quiz?

Answer: Bottlenose

There are two species of bottlenose dolphins - the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus). Bottlenose dolphins can be found in all oceans of the world except those that surround the polar areas. Bottlenose dolphins are very intelligent.

In fact, they have been shown to use tools, communicate with one another, transmit their knowledge and skills to younger generations, and they have the third-largest relative brain size amongst mammals (after humans and great apes).
10. What is a leftover sandwich material, often fed to birds?

Answer: Breadcrumb

Many people feed breadcrumbs to birds, but experts agree that this is not the best choice. Although bread is technically not toxic for them, it does them no good because it is basically empty carbohydrates with no nutrients. Birds will fill up on the bread and not eat other food that they should, so they become malnourished.

They also tend to defecate more often when they eat bread. This spreads disease amongst the birds, and sometimes to other animals or even humans. If birds don't happen to eat all pieces of bread that are thrown out, mould or other pests such as insects and rodents will be attracted.

In other words, be careful with your breadcrumbs to keep your neighbourhood birds healthy.
