Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sunset
French artist Eugène Delacroix (April 26, 1798 to August 13, 1863), regarded as the leader of the French Romantic school, created "Sunset" circa 1850. Not strictly speaking a painting, this work was done with pastels, that is a powdered substance most often formed into sticks resembling colored chalks, on blue laid paper, mounted on paperboard.
The dimensions are 8 1/16 x 10 3/16 in. (20.4 x 25.9 cm). It is housed in the Drawings and Prints collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
2. After Sunset
French-born American Artist Louis Aston Knight (August 3, 1873 to May 8, 1948) was the contemporary of artistic giant Paul Gaugin and on visiting terms with Claude Monet, whose garden at Giverny inspired his own at Beaumont-le-Roger. But rather than great works of art, Aston Knight painted pretty pictures, mostly of Normandy.
He was admired in the Paris Salon, earning a Gold Medal and other honors. In the early 1920s U.S. President Warren Harding bought one of his paintings for the White House. Yet, today, he is so little regarded that, though several of his paintings can be found online, there is no information on when they were painted. This pretty piece, "After Sunset", oil on canvass, is in a private collection. But I can't even find its dimensions, let alone when it was painted. Moreover, while Gaugins and Monets sell for multi-millions, Aston Knight's paintings sell for mere thousands. To my decidedly non-expert way of thinking, that doesn't seem right.
3. A Winter's Evening
Danish landscape painter Anders Andersen-Lundby (December 16, 1841 to January 4, 1923) is perhaps best known for his winter scenes, often depicting late afternoon sunshine or sunset, as in the lovely picture shown here. He painted the oil on canvas "A Winter's Evening" (also given as "Winter Evening") in 1886.
The work's dimensions are 29.7 by 41.4 in. (75.5 by 105.4 cm). I can't find any information on where this work is currently housed.
4. Twilight, Mount Ktaadn
A leading figure in the Hudson River School, Hartford, Connecticut-born Frederic Edwin Church (May 4, 1826 to April 7, 1900) was both a painter and an extensive traveler. He painted this view of Mane's Mt. Katahdin, "Twilight, Mount Ktaadn", oil on paper mounted on panel, circa 1858-60. It measures 10.5 by 13.6 in. (26.6 by 34.6 cm). It is in a private collection.
5. Moonrise over the Sea
German Romantic landscape painter Caspar David Friedrich (September 5, 1774 to May 7, 1840) was born in Greifswald in the present German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. At the time of his birth, the area was part of Swedish Pomerania.
Considered the most important German painter of his generation, Friedrich studied in Copenhagen before settling in Dresden, where he died. His paintings are considered gentle and contemplative. He painted "Moonrise over the Sea" (also given as "Moonrise by the Sea") in 1822. Oil on canvas, the work measures 21.6 by 27.9 in. (55 by 71 cm). It is in the collection of the Alte Nationalgalerie, a daughter institution of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
6. Summer Evening at Skagen
Danish painter and sculptor Peder Severin Krøyer (July 23, 1851 to November 21, 1909) painted his wife Marie and their dog Rap in 1892. The full title of the work is "Summer Evening at Skagen. The Artist's Wife and Dog by the Shore". The work is oil on canvas, 48 by 81 in. (123 by 206 cm).
It is in the collection of the Skagen Museum in Skagen, Denmark, on loan from: Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen.
7. Moonlight
Among the most highly regarded of all American artists, the Bostonian Winslow Homer (February 24, 1836 to September 29, 1910) is most renowned for his seascapes. He created "Moonlight" in 1874 with watercolor and graphite pencil on paper. It is held by the Arkell Museum in Canajoharie, New York.
8. Sailing by Moonlight
Martin Johnson Heade (August 11, 1819 to September 4, 1904) is now regarded as perhaps the foremost American artist of his generation. Though born in the Delaware River hamlet of Lumberville, Pennsylvania, he is best known for his New England marshscapes and seascapes.
He also made exquisite paintings of tropical birds and flowers as well as documenting the landscapes of Florida, where he spent his last years. He painted the ethereal "Sailing by Moonlight" circa 1860. It is oil on canvas, 14.2 by 22.2 in. (36.2 by 56.5 cm).
The work is held in a private collection.
9. Evening Sky with Moon
Though renowned as one of the pioneers of 20th-century abstract art, Dutch artist Piet Mondrian (March 7, 1872 to February 1, 1944) spent many years as a figurative painter. He produced "Evening sky with moon" in 1907. Housed in the collection of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag in The Hague, it is oil on board, 24.8 by 29.1 in. (63 by 74 cm.
10. Mountain Stream in the Moonlight

Rieger painted "picturesque" landscapes and seascapes, including alpine subjects, North Sea motifs and depictions of Italian coastlines.
