Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Whom did Emily Arundell suspect to have caused her accident?

Answer: Charles Arundell

In a conversation with Emily a few days before the incident, Charles had warned her not be so tight-fisted with her money. He had issued a thinly veiled threat that her refusal to part with her money could lead to her being 'bumped off'. Thus it was only natural that she suspected him to have caused her accident.
2. What was the name of Emily's dog?

Answer: Bob

Bob had a rubber ball which he often left on the stairs after he finished playing with it. Charles on his way to dinner once slipped on it and almost broke his neck which planted the idea of staging such an accident in the killer's mind.
3. Why was Emily disappointed with her niece, Bella?

Answer: She had married a Greek.

Emily had an inherent dislike for foreigners, especially Greeks, Turks and Argentines. Dr. Tanios was a capable doctor and had charming manners but she was still wary of him. The fact that he had lost most of Bella's money while speculating did not help matters.
When Hastings suggests that Dr. Tanios seems too affable a person to be a murderer, Hercule Poirot mentions a few other murderers he had caught in previous cases with a similar disposition.
4. Who had taken arsenic from the garden shed with the intention of poisoning Emily?

Answer: Theresa Arundell

Theresa thought it would be an easy way of getting rid of her aunt but found that she wasn't cold-blooded enough to go through with it. Charles had also thought of poisoning his aunt and discussed the use of arsenic with the gardener.
5. To whom did Emily Arundell leave the bulk of her estate?

Answer: Miss Lawson

Miss Lawson had only been with Emily Arundell for a year and Emily seemed to have no special liking for her. Also, Miss Lawson was hardly the kind of person who could be charged with unduly influencing Emily into altering her will. Emily was afraid that Charles had caused her accident and had shown him the new will as a precaution against further such 'accidents'.

She had no plans to leave her money outside the family.
6. Theresa Arundell required money to help her fiancé undertake his research work.

Answer: True

Dr. Donaldson was brilliant in his field of work but due to lack of money was forced to work as a general physician. In the last chapter, Hastings mentions that Dr. Donaldson had made a name for himself and was 'an authority on the functions of ductless glands'.
7. Whom did Miss Lawson claim to have seen kneeling on the stairs, the night before Emily had her accident?

Answer: Theresa Arundell

On being questioned by Hercule Poirot, Miss Lawson claimed to have seen Theresa Arundell kneeling on the stairs the night before Emily's accident. Miss Lawson remembered that the smell of varnish had been very strong and she had heard a soft tapping on the stairs.

In her mirror, she had seen a woman on the stairs who was wearing a brooch with the initials T.A. on it. Theresa had a similar brooch and she was sure that it had been her that night.
8. What kind of poison did Poirot suspect was used to kill Emily?

Answer: Phosphorus

The symptoms of phosphorus poisoning were the same as yellow atrophy of the liver. Since Emily Arundell had suffered from liver trouble for many years, no foul play was suspected. Dr. Grainger, Emily's family physician, had lost his sense of smell during a bout of flu and thus couldn't detect the garlic odour of her breath which was a distinct sign of phosphorus poisoning. Poirot's only clue was that Emily's breath was phosphorescent on the night of her death.
9. Bella was forced to take an overdose of chloral by her husband.

Answer: False

Bella committed suicide when she realized that Hercule Poirot had caught her. She preferred to take her own life rather than be hanged for her crime.
10. Who murdered Emily Arundell?

Answer: Bella Tanios

Bella was unhappy with her husband and she didn't like living in Smyrna, Greece. She hoped the money her aunt left her would help her begin a new life in England with her two children.
