Answer: Nice cigars

Paul and Albert give him quite a few cigars and in return they both are sent to a nice Catholic hospital.
5. What does Paul first describe the Russians as?

Answer: Meek, scolded St. Bernard dogs

When Paul sees the Russians, he eventually realizes that they are people too and begins to see that all the men fighting in World War II are one great brotherhood. Eventually, after seeing the Russians and humanizing them, Paul comes up with a purpose. Paul's purpose is to show the world the horrible and gruesome nature of war. Remarque had the same idea, so he wrote "All Quiet on the Western Front".
6. Where does the title derive from in the novel?

Answer: The description of the day Paul died.

Paul gave up on life because all of his friends had died in the world and he had lost all motivation to live. Paul stood up to see nature and got shot.
7. Who is the "terror of Klosterburg"?

Answer: Himmelstoss

Himmelstoss is a cruel, nationalistic man who wants respect and loves power. Himmelstoss was a postman before the war.
8. What are the two things soldiers believe in at the front?

Answer: Chance and Mother Earth

Paul has an entire poem about how Earth protects soldiers from bullets. Another example of Paul experiencing chance is seen when he walks to one outpost, leaves to go to another, comes back to the first and sees it was destroyed by a mortar, goes to the second outpost, and sees that is was also hit by a mortar while he was gone.
9. Who is Kantorek?

Answer: Paul's nationalistic school teacher

Kantorek convinces Paul's entire class (in school) to join the army and one kid, Joseph Behm, doesn't want to go. Kantorek and his parents pressure him to go and when he does, he is the first to die. Kantorek has a very ignorant and romantic image of the German soldiers.
10. What do the wounded horses represent?

Answer: The innocent wounded men fighting in WWI who were also born in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Both the horses and the recruits are following their orders and getting killed and wounded by doing society's requirements. They were both born at the wrong place in the wrong time.
