Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What event kicks off the novel?

Answer: an Algerian drug runner is killed in Paris

The three wrong answers are from the books "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and "From Russia With Love" and from the film version of "Live and Let Die".

Drug smuggler Yusuf Hahim is executed in Paris in an especially savage way: his tongue is ripped from his mouth with pliers, because he's informed to the authorities! By the way, the novel is set in the middle to late 1960s, when the Vietnam War was in full swing, and the popularity of the Bond stories were skyrocketing, thanks to the popular film versions.
2. Where do we first see James Bond?

Answer: Vatican City, Rome

Bond is seeing an Papal audience in St. Peter's Square in his first scene in the book. He's on the last leg of a three-month sabbatical to see if he wants to continue his globe-trotting career or settle down to desk work. He's also been on a regimen of exercise to get back in shape.
3. Scarlett Papava is the "Bond girl" in this novel, a banker sent to assist 007. What's the identity she assumes on first meeting Bond?

Answer: Larissa Rossi

Scarlett first meets Bond in the guise of a married aristocrat, but afterwards she reveals her true identity.

Tiffany Case is the jewel thief of "Diamonds Are Forever", Jill Masterton is the aide of Auric Goldfinger who later gets gold-plated for her switching to Bond's side in "Goldfinger" and Bond meets Ryder on a Caribbean isle in "Dr. No".
4. The novel's villain, Julius Gortner, makes illegal drugs in the Middle East. What physical deformity does he have?

Answer: he has a left arm like a monkey's

Dr. No, in the novel, has ugly steel pincers in place of hands (the movie switched them to less gruesome metallic hands). Franscesco Saramanga of "The Man With The Golden Gun" is born with a third nipple. No Bond villain's ever had a clubfoot to my knowledge!

Julien Gortner hides his simian left hand in an oversize silk glove.
5. What game does Gortner challenge Bond to in Paris?

Answer: tennis

Though tennis isn't a game associated with Bond, he defeats Gortner (with some help from Scarlett). Bond is quite athletic, being proficient at judo, skiing and skin diving. Faulks plays tennis, so he made a tennis match the meeting place between Bond and his foe. Bond played a golf match with Goldfinger for a bar of gold and faced Louis Jourdan's Kamil Khan at backgammon in the film of "Octopussy". Baccarat is on of the card games Bond regularly plays.
6. What is Gortner's plan?

Answer: explode an A-bomb in Russia and blame England for it

Gortner has a consuming hatred of Great Britain ever since the end of World War 2. Gortner fought for both the Nazis and Soviets. He has pipelined narcotics into England, but now wants Soviet Russia to attack England, so he plots to explode an atomic bomb inside Russia and make it look as if England attacked.
7. Who's Bond's contact in Iran?

Answer: Darius Alizadeh

Bond meets Alizadeh on arriving in Iran. Alizadeh proves a loyal and brave ally, finally dying in a gun battle with traitor J.D. Silver on a Iran street.

Kimball O'Hara and Gunga Din are creations of Rudyard Kipling, while Mr. Moto was created by John P. Marquand.
8. Bond also meets Scarlett's twin sister. What's her name and what distinguishes her from Scarlett?

Answer: Poppy; a strawberry birthmark on her thigh

On meeting Bond, Poppy wants him to kill Gortner. She shows Bond the birthmark on her thigh so he'll know it's her and not her sister.

Tilly is Jill Masterton's sister, but doesn't have gold-flecked eyes (I got that from pulp superhero Doc Savage). Sabrina and Claire aren't real Bond girls (I took the white streak in red hair from Cotton Hawes of the late Ed McBain's 87th Precinct series).
9. What's the deformity of Gortner's aide Chagrin?

Answer: a flap in his skull from an operation

Chagrin is a Vietnamese ex-soldier who had an botched operation on his brain after being wounded in battle. He covers his flap with a kepi, the cap with a cloth in back used by the French Foreign Legion. Bond suffers much from Chagrin's ruthless sadism.
10. What does Gortner do to Scarlett after she and Bond are captured?

Answer: give her to his drug-addicted workers

Gortner has a work force of drug addicts making his drugs, from all over the world. He puts Scarlett on display along with other woman prisoners on a runway before the addicts and lets them have the women. Bond is forced to watch.
11. T or F: Bond is to fly Gortner's plane.

Answer: True

Since Gortner plans for England to be framed for his attack on Russia, why shouldn't Bond be at the controls?
12. How does Bond defeat Chagrin in the battle on the plane?

Answer: he removes Chagrin's hat

Like Gortner, Chagrin is abnormally sensitive about his skull-flap. Bond simply takes Chagrin's kepi off, and Chagrin hides it in shame. Bond then snaps Chagrin's neck, and with Scarlett's help subdues the rest of the crew and crahes the plane before it attacks Russia.
13. T or F: Bond's friend Felix Leiter appears.

Answer: True

Leiter, an ex-C.I.A. agent, turns up to help his pal Bond defeat Gortner and his gang.
14. How does Gortner die?

Answer: Gortner commits suicide

In the last battle with Bond , Gortner tries to escape, then shoots it out with Bond. Bond then exposes Gortner's left arm, as he took off Chagrin's hat, and gets the advantage. Rather than let Bond win, Gortner dives into the Seine, right into the path of a side-wheeler steamboat and perishes.
15. What do we learn about Scarlett at the end?

Answer: she was both Agent 004 and Poppy

Bond has learned that Scarlett was 004, the agent assigned to Bond to check if he was still up to spying, as well as her "twin sister". Bond and Scarlett wind up, of course, in bed!
