Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the start of chapter nine, "A Home With a Family Waiting", Edward and Alphonse finally arrive in Resembool and stop by the house of the Rockbells, Winry and Pinako. Almost immediately, both Winry and Pinako start yelling at Edward. In addition, Winry also hits Edward in the head with something. What is it?

Answer: A wrench

Winry, being a talented automail mechanic, has an affinity for tools. She is as enthusiastic about automail as Edward and Alphonse are with alchemy. It is no surprise that the item she grabs to pitch at Edward is a wrench.
2. In chapter nine, when Ed enters Pinako's house, she inspects Ed's automail. Ed expects that a repair would take a while, but Pinako says it would take less time than he expected. How long did she claim it would take?

Answer: Three days

Ed expected that it would take a week for Pinako to build a new arm from scratch and adjust his leg. However, ambitious Pinako says she can complete both (with Winry's help) in just three days. Afterward, Winry, excited to see Ed again after several years, jokes with him and then gives him a soft, joking shove but because he is not used to his temporary spare leg, the shove knocks him into a pile of boxes and other containers.
3. On the same day that Ed got his license and became a "dog of the military", what happened to his and Alphonse's house?

Answer: Ed and Alphonse burned it down

The day that Ed got his military license, he started his journey to find the Philosopher's Stone. Because of the things that had happened in the house (Ed and Al's mother's death and the failed alchemic ritual to bring her back), the brothers decided to burn it to the ground. They didn't want to return to Resembool.
4. At the start of chapter ten, "The Philosopher's Stone", we are introduced to Second Lieutenant Ross and Sergeant Brosh who are there to escort Major Armstrong and the Elric brothers. They notice Al and, because he is in full armor, they assume that he is the Fullmetal Alchemist. When they are informed that he is not, Sergeant Brosh asks Al why he wears armor. What do the brothers reply, in unison?

Answer: "It's a hobby."

The brothers cannot afford to admit that they attempted to perform an illegal human transmutation, so they have to quickly think up a convincing excuse. "It's a hobby" is the humorous response the brothers give, which prompts Brosh and Ross to wonder what sort of hobby the kids have.
5. In chapter ten, we are also introduced to Sheska. Sheska is a woman with an unusual talent. What is it?

Answer: She has memorized everything she has ever read

Sheska's talent comes in handy, especially since Lust burned down the library that the Elrics needed to visit. Sheska worked at that library at one point and had read every book in there, including the book by Dr. Marcoh that the brothers needed. The military hired her to write down the contents of that book which, at first, appears to be nothing more than a cookbook.
6. Once the brothers discover that the book that Marcoh wrote is more than what it seems on the surface, Edward studies the book intently. He eventually discovers the main ingredient necessary to make a Philosopher's Stone. What is it?

Answer: A living human

Chapter ten ends with Ed finally deciphering Marcoh's "cook book". When he discovers that the main ingredient necessary to make a Philosopher's Stone is a living human, he becomes understandably frustrated, both at Marcoh and at the fact that it will be impossible for him to obtain a Philosopher's Stone without sacrificing a life.
7. In chapter eleven, "The Two Guardians", Ed, with the help of Al, Armstrong, Ross, and Brosh, tries to figure out where Marcoh performed his experiments in an attempt to make a Philosopher's Stone. There were several labs in Central City, but what was the number of the one that Ed decided must be where Marcoh did his experimenting?

Answer: 5

The fifth research laboratory in Central City was shut down, supposedly due to fear of collapse. However, Ed figured that that was most likely where Marcoh performed his experiments because it was right next to a prison, where there were plenty of live humans whose lives he could use for his experiments.
8. When Ed and Al enter the abandoned research laboratory, they have to split up because Al is too big to fit into the small opening that Ed must enter to get into the lab. While they are split up, they are each confronted by attackers who are only known by numbers. Which two numbers do they go by?

Answer: 48 and 66

Number 66 was the attacker that came after Al. He wore a mask that looked like a skull and he carried a short sword and what looked like a large butcher knife. Number 48 attacked Ed. He wore a suit of armor somewhat similar to Al's and he carried a longer sword. Ed discovers that 48 is nothing more than an empty suit of armor, like Al.
9. In chapter twelve, "The Definition of Human", Al's attacker reveals his real name. He says that his first name is Barry, but he was once known as Barry the __________.

Answer: Chopper

To Barry's shock, Al isn't aware of who he is. In a second attempt to surprise and scare Al, Barry admits that he is nothing more than an empty suit of armor. When Al proves that he is, too, Barry is the one who is shocked and he calls Al a freak.
10. When it appears as if Ed is going to be killed by his attacker at the end of chapter twelve, he thinks of something that makes him angry and gives him the strength to fight back. What does he think of?

Answer: He is being attacked by Scar

Remembering Scar gives Ed the strength to perform the alchemy to destroy his attacker's armor. Defeated, number 48 asked Ed to kill him but Ed refused because he didn't want to kill any living person and saying that number 48 wasn't alive was like saying Al wasn't alive, either. Number 48 gets murdered shortly after, anyway, when Lust stabs his blood seal.

She and Envy threaten Ed, ending volume three of the manga.
