Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the first characters we meet in the "Fullmetal Alchemist" manga is Father Cornello, a man who claims to have a connection with the Sun God, Leto. He claims that he can perform "miracles" because of Leto. Which of these is the first "miracle" we see him perform?

Answer: Creating a large flower from a small flower

Cornello comes outside to speak to a large crowd in his city, Lior. When he is first shown outside, there are small flowers falling from the sky. He catches one and performs the "miracle" of turning it into a large sunflower.
2. Edward Elric suspected that Cornello's "miracles" were simply alchemy. However, there was something different about the alchemy that Cornello was performing that couldn't normally happen. What was it?

Answer: Cornello ignored alchemical laws

One of the main laws of alchemy, according to "Fullmetal Alchemist", is called "equivalent exchange". This means that in order to create something, you must sacrifice something of equal value. For example, if you wanted to make a wooden desk, you would need to have something wooden available, like a tree, in order to make that desk. Cornello was not sacrificing anything to create the items he was creating.

By the way, no incantations need to be said and there is no rule that states alchemy can't be done in the open.
3. The Elrics determine that Cornello is using the Philosopher's Stone, the item that the boys have been searching for this whole time. During their final confrontation with Cornello, Ed and Alphonse come face to face with a chimera, a creature that is a mix of two creatures fused together alchemically. What two creatures were fused together to create this particular chimera?

Answer: A lion and a lizard

Chimeras can be created from fusing together any two animals, including humans! In this case, the chimera happens to have the head and front portion of the body of a lion and the tail and rear portion of the body of a lizard. After a hard fought battle, the chimera is finally defeated with a swift kick to the head, knocking it out.
4. During the second chapter, interspersed within the main story are flashbacks showing how the Elric brothers became the way they are today. During a failed attempt to use alchemy to resurrect their mother from the dead, Ed lost a limb and Alphonse lost his entire body as equivalent exchange. Alphonse's body was gone, but Ed was able to save his soul and attach it to a suit of armor using alchemy. The equivalent exchange to do this was another of his limbs. Which of his limbs did Ed lose in exchange for Alphonse's soul?

Answer: Right arm

Ed lost his left leg as part of the equivalent exchange for his mother's body. He then sacrificed his right arm to save his brother's soul. He created a transmutation circle (a drawing that most alchemists need to perform their alchemy) from his own blood on the inside of a suit of armor in his basement and attached Al's soul to it.
5. At the end of the second chapter, after Ed and Al expose Cornello as a fraud, they find out that the Philosopher's Stone that they thought they had found at last was actually a fake. After this, the brothers leave Lior to continue their search, but back in the city, what do we find out is Cornello's fate?

Answer: He is eaten

At the end of this chapter, we meet the characters Lust and Gluttony who, we find out, gave Cornello the fake Philosopher's Stone. When they realize Cornello is no longer of any use to them, Lust kills him and then Gluttony eats his body.
6. In the third chapter, Ed and Al make there way to the mining town of Youswell. Shortly after they arrive, they go to the only inn in the town to try to get a room. Ed eventually is denied a room for what reason?

Answer: He is a state alchemist

After arriving at the inn, Ed, thinking he has enough money for a room because of his salary as a state alchemist, finds out that a room costs 200,000 (the monetary unit is not mentioned), which is even more than he can afford. In exchange for a room, he decides to repair broken items around the town using alchemy, but when he lets everyone know that his name is Edward Elric, the people in the inn recognize him as a state alchemist and throw him out of the inn.
7. Shortly after Ed is denied a room, we are introduced to Lieutenant Yoki. His attitude becomes obvious right away, as he insults the appearance of the place as he enters. For what purpose does the egotistic Yoki enter the inn?

Answer: To collect taxes

The citizens of Youswell are a poor people and they can't afford the high taxes that they are expected to pay. Despite this, Yoki comes in expecting payment, as they are already behind on their taxes. Ed saves the day by letting Yoki know that he is a state alchemist, at which time Yoki invites Ed back to his home.
8. Ed is asked to use alchemy to make gold so that the citizens of Youswell can pay their taxes. What is the main reason that Ed is unable to do this for them?

Answer: Creating gold using alchemy is illegal

If anyone knew that a state alchemist had used alchemy to create gold, he or she would be immediately stripped of their title by the military. Despite that, after some thought, Ed takes some gold coins and alchemically mixes them with some dust and coal dirt to create fake gold bars when no one is looking.

He then uses these gold bars to buy the Youswell deed from Yoki which Ed then sells back to the people of Youswell in exchange for one night's stay at the inn. Yoki's new stash of gold then turns back into the dirt and coal dust that it was created from.
9. In the final chapter of volume one, the Elrics are riding on a train after leaving Youswell. During their trip, the train gets hijacked. At one point, one of the hijackers tries to shoot Al, but this doesn't turn out well for the shooter. What happens?

Answer: The bullets ricochet off of Al's armor

Al tries to warn the shooter of what would happen if he fired, but he doesn't listen. The shooter is lucky that many of the bullets missed him, but one of the ricochetted bullets hits him in the leg, drawing blood and causing him to collapse.
10. After having won the battle against the hijackers, Ed and Al exit the train at their destination where they meet Colonel Roy Mustang. Not long after they greet each other, the leader of the hijackers exits the train and tries to attack with a concealed knife. Roy uses his alchemical abilities to take down this man by doing what?

Answer: Lighting a spark that causes an explosion

Roy Mustang is also known as the flame alchemist for his ability to create sparks to cause fire. This is done by specialized gloves that have transmutation circles on them that cause a spark to be created just by Roy snapping his fingers. Of course, the downfall to this ability is that the gloves are useless if they get wet.
