Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of chapter 5, "The Alchemist's Suffering", Edward is being informed by Roy Mustang about an alchemist, Shou Tucker, who created a chimera that could speak like a human. However, this chimera would only say one thing. What was it?

Answer: "I want to die."

The creation of this chimera earned Tucker a state alchemist's certification. Unfortunately, this chimera wanted to die so badly that it refused to eat and passed away shortly after its creation.
2. Ed later discovers that Tucker had just created a second chimera that could talk. This one was special because it could say several different things. What did Ed find out that this chimera was made from?

Answer: A human and a dog

In fact, it was Tucker's own dog, Alexander, and his own daughter, Nina, that he used to create this chimera. Ed realized this when the chimera called him "big brother", a term that Nina used when speaking with Ed. He also realized that the original talking chimera that Tucker created was made from his wife. Ed became infuriated and punched Tucker until Alphonse stopped him.
3. At the end of the fifth chapter, we are introduced to a new villain whose agenda is to rid the world of state alchemists, though at this point, it is unclear why. What is this villain's name (which is discovered in the following chapter)?

Answer: Scar

It is not revealed what his real name is, but he is known as Scar for the X-shaped scar on his forehead. When he is first introduced, he enters Tucker's house and murders Tucker. In addition, he murders the talking chimera in order to put it to rest and end its suffering.
4. At the start of chapter six, "The Right Hand of Destruction", Ed is having a flashback to his childhood with his mother. In this flashback, what did he use alchemy to create?

Answer: A toy horse

It was when Ed showed his mother this toy horse, as she was outside picking tomatoes, that she compares him to his father. His father is not shown, but it is made clear that he is a talented alchemist. After this, though, Ed's flashback turns into a nightmare as his mother becomes bloody and points out that he couldn't save her.
5. At the end of chapter six, Ed and Al encounter the same man that killed Tucker. During the battle that ensues, which of the following does NOT occur?

Answer: Ed gets his automail leg destroyed

Initially, Ed and Al run from Scar and Al creates a wall to block off the alley that the brothers ran in. However, Scar's right arm has a strange ability to destroy and it quickly destroys the wall. He then destroys Al's armor and attempts to destroy Ed's arm, but fails.

He needs to know what material something is made out of before he can destroy it and he assumed that Ed's arm was flesh and bone. Once he found out it was automail, he was able to destroy it.
6. At the start of "After the Rain", chapter 7, several members of the military come to Ed and Al's rescue. Among them is Alex Louis Armstrong. What does he say is his alchemist title?

Answer: The Strong Arm Alchemist

Appropriately known as the Strong Arm Alchemist, Armstrong has a very muscular frame, but despite his exterior, he is gentle when not fighting. Roy Mustang is the Flame Alchemist and the late Shou Tucker was the Sewing Life Alchemist. Riza Hawkeye is excellent with guns and indeed fires several bullets at Scar during the fight, but is not an alchemist.
7. Thirteen years prior to the events unfolding in the story, a civil war broke out in the country of Ishbal (here, called "Ishvar", but changed in later volumes). During the Ishbalan Civil War, what role were state alchemists recruited to play?

Answer: Human weapons

Roy Mustang reveals to Ed and Al that he was one of the alchemists involved in the Ishbalan Civil War. In addition, it is shown that Alex Louis Armstrong was involved. The alchemists were sent over to Ishbal in what Roy referred to as an "all-out genocide campaign."
8. In chapter 8, "The Road of Hope", Ed is shown sitting on a train. Along with him was a member of the military who was chosen to watch over him because, without his automail arm, he cannot perform alchemy. Who was it that was chosen to watch over him?

Answer: Alex Louis Armstrong

Ed is visibly frustrated that Armstrong ended up being the person to watch over him. Armstrong is sometimes too kind for his own good and nearly crushed Ed while hugging him.

The others were asked to protect him, but came up with excuses.

Hughes: "I got a ton of work waiting for me back in Central."
Roy: "I can't leave the East Headquarters."
Riza: "I'm too busy babysitting the Colonel (someone has to keep him in line)."
9. Because Al's body was so badly destroyed, he could not walk on his own, so he was placed in a wooden crate for the duration of the train ride. Ed's "bodyguard" put Al in an odd car of the train. Which car did Al wind up in?

Answer: The livestock car

Ed wanted to make sure Armstrong actually put Al on the train and Armstrong said he took care of everything. When he told Ed where he left Al, he said he thought Al might get lonely by himself. Al is shown surrounded by sheep and rams and Ed points out that that's worse than being left in the luggage car.
10. When at a train stop, Armstrong notices an old friend and former member of the military. When he tries to say hi, the man flees. When Ed asks who the man was, Armstrong tells him that he was formerly in the alchemy research department. What was this man's name?

Answer: Dr. Marcoh

Finding out that Marcoh had done alchemy research, Ed decides to get off of the train, despite not having reached his mechanic, in order to find out if Marcoh knows anything about the Philosopher's Stone. He learns that Marcoh is living under the name Mauro to disguise himself.

When confronted, he admits his identity and gives Ed as much information as he can on the Philosopher's Stone and gives him a lead on where he can get more information, the National Central Library, first branch. Later, Lust pays a visit to Marcoh and, when she threatens to kill a young girl, Marcoh reveals to her where he sent Ed. Lust makes plans to destroy the library before Ed can get there. To be continued....
