Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why is Haymitch Abernathy not able to fully celebrate his birthday as other kids are in "Sunrise on the Reaping"?

Answer: His birthday falls on Reaping Day each year.

"Sunrise on the Reaping" opens with Haymitch being woken up by his 10-year old brother Sid on his 16th birthday. Haymitch's birthday falls on July 4th which is Reaping Day each year in the 12 districts. Since Reaping Day is such a sorrowful day for the districts, it causes Haymitch to not be able to fully celebrate his birthday as other kids are.

However, Haymitch does like that he doesn't have to go to school on Reaping Day and that he is able to sleep in a little later.
2. In "Sunrise on the Reaping", what is the occupation of Haymitch's mom, Willamae Abernathy, who has to take care of her two boys herself since her husband died in a coal mine fire?

Answer: Washerwoman

In the book's opening chapter, Haymitch describes his mom as being only 35 years old in age but being much older in experience. Willamae works as a washerwoman, particularly for the miners of District 12 that constantly need their clothes cleaned after working in dirty and dangerous conditions. In addition to washing them, Willamae also tailors clothes.
3. What illegal activity does Haymitch Abernathy engage in to help earn extra money for his family in "Sunrise on the Reaping"?

Answer: Bootlegging

Haymitch works with Hattie Meeney who is a bootlegger specializing in a concoction she refers to as 'white liquor'. At first Mattie would only let Haymitch do the heavy lifting and grunt work parts of bootlegging but eventually she allows him to help with the distilling. On his 16th birthday, Mattie gives Haymitch a pint of their brew that he eventually trades for other items in the Hob area of District 12.
4. After he assists Mattie, Haymitch goes and meets his girlfriend Lenore Dove. Rather than the bird, what does she tell him that her name Dove represents in "Sunrise on the Reaping"?

Answer: Color

Haymitch Abernathy describes that he has been head over heels in love with Lenore Dove since the day they met. On that day, about six years ago as Haymitch describes that he was 10 at the time, she tells him that Dove is a representation of the color rather than the bird. Comically he asks her what that color is and she tells him like the bird.

Indeed dove refers to a color that is a light gray with tinges of beige or white.
5. What special use does the metal strip birthday gift have that Lenore gives to Haymitch in "Sunrise on the Reaping"?

Answer: It is a flint striker for starting fires.

When Lenore gives Haymitch the gift he marvels at the craftsmanship. The metal strip has been crafted into a design with a snake and a bird on opposite sides that eventually become one. Upon inspecting it, Haymitch realizes that it is also a flint striker that can be used to create sparks and start a fire.

After he returns home, Haymitch tells his brother Sid that he will show him how to use the flint striker.
6. What causes Haymitch to be chosen by Drusilla to be District 12's second boy at the reaping in "Sunrise on the Reaping"?

Answer: Haymitch intervenes with a Peacekeeper to save Lenore.

For the 50th Hunger Games each district has two boys and two girls chosen on Reaping Day. Haymitch initially thinks that he is safe since two other boys' names are drawn out of the canister. However, the second boy, Woodbine Chance, tries to escape when his name is called and he is shot by a Peacekeeper.

The boy's mom and Lenore try to retrieve his body and, after they did not obey the commands of the Peacekeepers, one of them raises a gun at Lenore. At this point Haymitch intervenes by getting in the line of fire.

The Peacekeeper uses his gun to hit Haymitch in the face. Drusilla then tells Haymitch that he is to be District 12's second boy for the Hunger Games and to make it look good for tv, his name is staged to be drawn out of the canister.
7. What fellow District 12 tribute and friend of Haymitch Abernathy dies on the chariot procession in "Sunrise on the Reaping"?

Answer: Louella McCoy

Louella McCoy and Haymitch had been friends for a long time as she was Haymitch's neighbor when they lived in the Seam. At the time of her death Louella was just 13 years old. On the train Haymitch and Louella discussed forming an alliance to better their chances of winning the Hunger Games.

At the chariot parade someone from the crowd throws a firecracker that startled the horses pulling the District 12 tributes. This caused horses from other chariots to also act erratically and tragically Louella was thrown from her carriage and killed.
8. A boy named Ampert from District 3 forms an alliance to combat the Career tributes. What is the novel name of this alliance?

Answer: Newcomers

When Ampert introduces himself, Haymitch is amazed at his composure and confidence for a 12-year old. Initially Haymitch does not want to ally with those from other districts but he eventually agrees and by the end of Part One the alliance has six districts. Since they have not been training for the Hunger Games like the Career tributes have, Haymitch recommends they call themselves Neddy Newcomer which was a term his father told him that miners in his district use.

This eventually gets shortened to Newcomers for the alliance's nickname.
9. What is the first training exercise that Haymitch and his District 12 allies have in "Sunrise on the Reaping"?

Answer: Knife throwing

Haymitch is relieved that their first training exercise is knife throwing. With his friends Burdock and Blair, Haymitch would throw knifes at targets back in District 12. In the training Haymitch meets Ringina from District 7, who hits a bullseye on one of her throws and discusses rebelling against the Peacekeepers.
10. Due to Haymitch's behavior at the chariot parade, he is summoned to meet President Snow. What does Snow tell Haymitch his behavior over the next few days will determine?

Answer: How Haymitch will die in the Hunger Games

During the chariot parade a terrible accident occurs that causes the death of Haymitch's friend Louella. A distraught Haymitch (accompanied by a lifeless Louella) rides a chariot up to President Snow's residence and yells at him that Louella's death is on his hands.

This act of defiance prompts Snow to have a talk with Haymitch in which Haymitch is told that that the way he acts going forward will determine if he has an agonizing death in the Hunger Games or a fair one. Earlier Haymitch had told his District 12 tribute allies that he does not want to die by some mechanical animal created by the Capitol.
