Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What sudden event at the other end of the arena startles Haymitch and makes him search for cover?

Answer: The mountain has turned into an erupting volcano.

For most of the first few days of the 50th Hunger Games, Haymitch has been at the northern end of the arena. His initial plan was to blast the water tank with the hope that this would cause the power to go out in the arena and essentially end the games. This plan did not work as the Capitol had a back-up generator. To make matters worse, Haymitch's friend and ally, Ampert, got killed shortly after the water tank was blasted by deadly squirrel 'mutts'.

Even before Haymitch can mourn the loss of his friend, he is startled by a deafening noise on the other side of the arena. To his horror, the mountain has turned into an actively erupting volcano. A dozen tributes end up dying from the volcano and those in the area that survived had to flee to avoid choking on the ash clouds.
2. Some of the Career tributes find Haymitch and a battle ensues. How does Maysilee save Haymitch by taking down Panache?

Answer: A poison dart

After the volcanic eruption, Haymitch tries to find the northern terminus of the arena but just ends up getting lost in a maze filled with holly bushes. After he gets out he is ambushed. Haymitch is able to take down the two tributes from District 4 before he encounters Panache from District 1. Panache bests Haymitch in combat by knocking him down and getting his weapon. Just as Panache is about to deliver a death blow to Haymitch, Maysilee lodges a poison dart in Panache's neck.

The darts that Maysilee found were not originally poisonous, but she made them deadly by dipping their tips in the juices of fruits that the Gamemakers had poisoned.

These darts were launched through a blowgun that helped generate speed and accuracy.
3. What animal that the Gamemakers have turned into a deadly 'muttation' do Haymitch and Maysilee encounter at the northern end of the arena's holly maze?

Answer: Ladybug

Haymitch doesn't fully tell Maysilee why he wants to try and find the northern edge of the arena but she agrees to follow him anyway. Their plan is to try and hack through the holly bushes, but when they start they are attacked by ladybug 'mutts'. Dozens of these ladybugs attach themselves to Haymitch and Maysilee, then suck their blood and explode. Haymitch and Maysilee take turns removing these ladybug 'mutts' from each other and luckily don't lose enough blood to pass out or get seriously injured.
4. Three of Haymitch's allies (Newcomers) are killed by a porcupine 'muttation'. What type of recognizable sound does this creature make to attract its prey?

Answer: It cries like a baby.

The porcupine 'mutt' created by the Gamemakers is the size of a bear and it is capable of ejecting its quills, which are poisonous. Haymitch and Maysilee are confused as to why there is a baby crying in the arena and are then horrified to see the damage caused. Luckily the two have a tarp to protect them from the razor sharp quills. Like you would do for a human baby that is crying, Haymitch tries to soothe the porcupine 'mutt' by tossing it food and talking to it.

After leading it astray, Haymitch and Maysilee realize that they are too late to save their three Newcomer allies that the porcupine encountered.
5. Surprisingly, Maysilee and a Career tribute named Magritte simultaneously attack some unsuspecting victims. Who do they attack, for which they will be punished later?

Answer: A group of Gamekeepers

Haymich and Maysilee are running for their lives away from the two remaining District 4 tributes when they encounter three Gamekeepers. The Gamekeepers are trying to fix a part of the arena that is malfunctioning and they plead with the tributes to not attack them. Magritte ends up throwing her trident into one of them and Maysilee attacks another with a poison dart.

The third Gamekeeper tries to escape but also perishes after falling onto the concrete while descending through a 'mutt' portal door. Maysilee is angry at Haymitch for not attacking the Gamekeepers, but Haymitch correctly assumes that it will just bring about retaliation from the Capitol.
6. In addition to being too far down, what does Haymitch learn is protecting the generator outside the arena's northern terminus?

Answer: A force field

Haymitch is trying to destroy the generator as it is what is powering the arena after he flooded Sub-level A. However, the generator is too far down for Haymitch to climb to. To determine how far down it is, Haymitch drops a rock at the generator and he is amazed to see that the rock comes back to him at the same trajectory. Haymitch determines that there must be some type of impenetrable force field that is protecting the generator and that he cannot destroy it.
7. After Maysilee and Wellie perish in the arena, Haymitch battles a Career tribute to determine the winner of the 50th Hunger Games. What is the name of this tribute from District 1 that nearly kills Haymitch but ends up being the final victim of the games?

Answer: Silka

Haymitch, Maysilee, Wellie and Silka are the final four tributes. Maysilee ends up being killed by 'mutt' geese. Haymitch is able to locate the Newcomer ally Wellie first and since she is so weak he goes off to look for food for her. Tragically, Wellie is killed by Silka's axe, leaving just Haymitch and Silka left to battle. Silka ends up goring Haymitch in the stomach but Haymitch is able to knife her in the eye. Eventually the two make it outside the arena's northern terminus that Haymitch had previously been to. Silka throws her axe at Haymitch and it goes over the cliff. However, the force field from the generator propels the axe back up and it hits Silka in the face at high speed. Before Haymitch succumbs to his wounds, Silka dies and thus Haymitch becomes the winner of the 50th Hunger Games.

Before he passes out, Haymitch creates a bomb and throws it at the generator's force field. He hears the explosion go off but is unsure if he has destroyed the generator. When Haymitch wakes up, he is no longer in the arena but rather in some building in the Capitol.
8. What does Haymitch notice about the video recap of the 50th Hunger Games during his victor's celebration?

Answer: It has been heavily edited.

Haymitch takes several days to recover from the wounds that he sustained in the 50th Hunger Games. Then President Snow has him attend parades and various events throughout the Capitol that he cannot stand. One of these is an interview with Caesar Flickerman about his time in the arena. During the interview Haymitch watches a recap of the games that he feels does not accurately portray his time in the arena. Specifically, the video is edited to not include moments where Haymitch helped other tributes, how he blew up the water tank and how he attempted to blow up the generator.

The recap video was edited to really play up the 'rascal' angle of Haymitch.
9. Eventually Haymitch is able to return to District 12 where he has lived his whole life. What tragedy takes place right after Haymitch arrives?

Answer: Haymitch's mother and brother die in a fire.

Haymitch traveled from the Capitol to District 12 on a train. After he is dropped off at the station and heads to his home, he notices that there is a raging fire. Sadly, Haymitch's mother and brother perish in the fire that, it is assumed, was purposely set on the orders of President Snow. Haymitch attempts to enter the house in spite of the flames but he is held back by his friend Burdock who tells him that they had already tried to rescue his family but were too late.
10. When Haymitch returns home to District 12, he is not able to find Lenore Dove and assumes that she must have run off.

Answer: False

After the death of his mother and brother in a fire, Haymitch seeks to find his love, Lenore Dove. He finds her in one of their normal spots in a field by a lake. Their love has not abated at all and they are so happy to see each other when they both thought they likely never would, with Haymitch competing in the Hunger Games. However, tragedy strikes again when Lenore eats a poisoned candy and dies from it. Her dying words to Haymitch are to promise her to "not let there be another sunrise on the reaping".

In the epilogue it is described that Haymitch has to be a mentor every year on his birthday (Reaping Day). For over 20 years there were no more victors from District 12 until the 74th Hunger Games, in which Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark competed and won.
