Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. President Snow has another girl take Louella McCoy's place as a District 12 tribute. What do Haymitch, Maysilee and Wyatt notice about this new girl that startles them?

Answer: She is being drugged through a chest pump.

Haymitch is summoned to President Snow to discuss his insubordinate and rebel-like behavior after Louella's death in the chariot parade. When he is there he is amazed to see that another girl that looks just like Louella McCoy has been found by President Snow to be the replacement District 12 tribute.

After he talks with this new girl he tells Snow that she is nothing like his friend that he knew for years that has died. Even so, Snow orders Haymitch to watch after her and make it appear that she is Louella McCoy.

When Maysilee and Wyatt meet the replacement girl, they sense that her robotic behavior is being controlled by the Capitol. Sure enough, Haymitch finds that she has a chest pump that is pumping drugs into her system and an earpiece for communication. Haymitch, Maysilee and Wyatt decide to call the new girl 'Lou Lou' as it is similar to their deceased friend's name but not exactly the same.
2. The first night the District 12 tributes stay at their quarters, Haymitch has a conversation with Beetee about trying to bring down the arena. What is the explosive idea that Beetee has?

Answer: Blow up the water tank and flood Sub-level A.

Beetee is a winner of a prior Hunger Games and his behavior has been flagged as problematic. Tragically Beetee's son, Ampert, is also a tribute at the 50th Hunger Games that Haymitch will be participating in and he is part of the plot to disrupt the games. Beetee tells Haymitch that the plan is to blow up the massive water tank in Sub-level A, which will drown the computer systems and cause them to malfunction. The hope is that this will end the 50th Hunger Games as its primary appeal is to broadcast the carnage to the citizens of the Capitol watching at home.
3. It is assumed that the higher score that a tribute receives from the Gamemakers, the more gifts (such as food) they will receive from sponsors when the Hunger Games begins. What tribute receives a score of 1 on a scale that goes from 1-12?

Answer: Haymitch (D12)

President Snow's influence is certainly felt when Haymitch receives a 1 from the Gamemakers. Even Lou Lou, who is being drugged and is clearly not herself, gets a score of 3. The Career tributes like Panache typically score from 8 to 11 whereas the Non-Careers (branded as Newcomers) typically score in the 4 to 7 range. From watching prior Hunger Games, Haymitch doesn't remember any tribute ever getting a score below a 3 so his 1 is quite unique.

Interestingly, Haymitch owns the 1 and uses it to his advantage to portray himself as a 'rascal' being targeted by the Gamemakers.
4. What individual, a popular character in the first three "Hunger Games" novels, takes over as the stylist for District 12 in "Sunrise on the Reaping" after Magno is unreliable?

Answer: Effie Trinket

Magno Stift's reputation precedes him, as the District 12 tributes had actually heard stories about how terrible their stylist is beforehand. Luckily for Haymitch, Maysilee, Wyatt and Lou Lou, Magno was too late showing up to prep them for their interviews so someone else had to step in. Effie Trinket ends up receiving a call from her sister, Proserpina, informing her the tributes from her district need clothes for their big interviews with Caesar Flickerman in which they are introduced to the Capitol. Thankfully, Effie is able to retrieve some black clothes from her great aunt & uncle.

She also assists the tributes with primping them for the camera. Even though she is essentially 'voluntold' to function as the stylist, Effie takes on the task with her typical optimism.
5. What Capitol resident surprisingly allows Haymitch to talk to Lenore Dove on the phone and then tells Haymitch clues about the arena and the plot to bring it down?

Answer: Plutarch

Plutarch is the photographer assigned to District 12 for the 50th Hunger Games. He is at the beck and call of Drusilla, but his obedience appears to be a farce. At any chance he gets, Plutarch tries to get Haymitch to trust him and buy into the plan to take down the arena and ultimately start a rebellion. Haymitch's girlfriend, Lenore Dove, has been arrested back home in District 12 and, while their phone conversation is short, it is full of love and hope. Plutarch's big clues for Haymitch are that to get to Sub-Level A he should find a 'mutt portal' below a flower berm and that the sun is oriented in the arena as it would be outside in real life (rises in the east, sets in the west).
6. What comical nickname do the Newcomer tributes give to the Career tributes that mocks how they suck up to the Capitol but are still from the districts?

Answer: Near beer

Not surprisingly considering his bootlegging background, Haymitch is the one that recommends the term 'Near Beer' to refer to the Careers. Being rather fond of beer myself, I find this term hilarious because as much as it tries to taste like beer, near beer is just not the same. Similarly, as much as the Career tributes from districts 1, 2 and 4 try to suck up to the Capitol, they are still not afforded the same luxuries as the Capitol residents.

Many residents of the Capitol view residents from all of the districts as inferior.
7. Haymitch makes his way north at the start of the 50th Hunger Games and he comes upon a stream. How does Haymitch determine that the stream is poisoned?

Answer: A rabbit drinks from it and then dies.

The night before the Hunger Games, the District 12 tributes are given advice from Wiress, the winner of the year's prior games: "first avoid the slaughter, then get weapons, then look for water, then find food and where to sleep". Rather than try to go to the Cornucopia to get prime weapons and supplies, Haymitch seeks to avoid the slaughter that will occur there and he heads north. Luckily, he is still able to retrieve a pack and a few weapons.

As he is traveling north, Haymitch is surprised to see how pristine the arena's environment is. Lo and behold, the serenity is a farce and what looks edible and drinkable in the arena is likely poisonous. Haymitch believes that the rabbit drinking from the stream in front of him was somehow sacrificing itself to warn Haymitch about it being poisoned. Luckily, Haymitch's pack has some tablets to help combat poison.
8. Lou Lou finds Haymitch in the arena's northern section and they pass several flower berms. Which one does Lou Lou lovingly hug?

Answer: Bee Balm

Since Haymitch, Maysilee and Wyatt all had never met Lou Lou before, they initially assume that she is from another district. While in training, Lou Lou sings a song that is popular in District 11 and her hugging the Bee Balm is another indication that she is likely from that district.

In District 11, Bee Balm is known for its aromatic associations and its healing qualities. However, like much of the rest of the arena, the Bee Balm is poisonous. Lou Lou ends up not being able to breathe and essentially dies in Haymitch's arms after he yanks out the pump that the Capitol had placed on her.
9. What animal 'muttation' that had attacked him does Haymitch follow to find an opening to carry out his arena destruction plot?

Answer: Butterfly

After Lou Lou's agonizing death, Haymitch tries to not allow the Gamemakers to remove her body with their drone claws. This causes the Gamemakers to send artificially mutated butterflies after Haymitch. Quick thinking saves Haymitch as he is able to start a fire that repels the butterflies. Knowing that these mutated butterflies will retreat to a 'mutt portal', Haymitch follows them. Comically, a flower berm called butterfly bush covers this portal door to Sub-Level A and Haymitch decides to fake sleep near it so as to carry out his arena destruction plot at nighttime.
10. Which of Haymitch's friends tragically dies at the end of Part 2 after mutated squirrels are sent after him?

Answer: Ampert

Ampert meets up with Haymitch at which time Haymitch is provided the blasting cap that he needs to blow up the water tank. Haymitch is able to detonate an explosion that destroys the water tank and flood Sub-Level A but regrettably a backup generator allows the Capitol to still control the arena. Seemingly for punishment, and for Haymitch to have to witness, when Haymitch returns back to the main arena, he is horrified to see that Ampert has been attacked by mutated, ravenous squirrels.

These squirrels leave nothing but bone. Haymitch hadn't known Ampert long but he admired his confidence, intelligence and the way he reminded him of his own brother, Sid.
