Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the maze-like canyon system where the story takes place?

Answer: The Mars Labyrinth

The Mars Labyrinth is a seemingly-odd area that has a hot climate and rough terrain. In the beginning of the story, the protagonist, Fujiki, wakes up in this location with no recollection of how he arrived there. Beside him is a red lunch pail containing a small pouch, a thermos, and a Pocket Game Kids (a small handheld gaming system) which tells him to head in a certain direction. Using his watch as a compass, he heads along, but in the middle of the night, he comes across another person, whom he discovers is named Ai Otomo.

The two decide to partner up in order to head to their destination.
2. After arriving at the first checkpoint, in which direction do Fujiki and Ai head?

Answer: North

When they arrive at Checkpoint #1, Ai and Fujiki meet seven other people who have woken up in the labyrinth. This checkpoint allows the others to use their Pocket Game Kids devices to gain more information (via satellite). However, Ai's device is broken from a fall she suffered from when she first passed Fujiki.

This device gives everyone directions. North (taken by Fujiki and Ai) will give them information while south will give food. East will give items of survival while west will give items of self-defense. Everyone splits into teams of two (with the exception of the team of three that heads south).
3. In which country is the labyrinth?

Answer: Australia

Along the way, Ai and Fujiki continue through the deserted expanses of fields and narrow paths. They finally reach their second (northern) checkpoint and receive new info on Fujiki's Pocket Game Kids. Because they chose 'information', a small character named Duckbilly Platy introduces them to the setting: Bungle Bungle, West Australia.

The area is a large, untouched piece of land with no real civilization for miles in any direction. Duckbilly also lets them know every other item at the other checkpoints including two that are denoted as traps (canned beer and FS biscuits). Fujiki and Ai return to the others at the first checkpoint in order to evenly distribute the items and the others nearly deny them their respective share due to the fact they only returned with info (such as their location) which really has no bearing anyway.

Items that they are given include a hatchet, matches, nylon fishing line, plastic dishes, fly nets, a hi-fi receiver (without batteries that can be used), and condoms (which can be used to store water as well). Ai and Fujiki quickly notice that many of the items on the list (including the FS biscuits and beer) are not present during the selection process.
4. At the third checkpoint, Ai and Fujiki come across a book. What kind of book is it?

Answer: A role-playing book

After departing from checkpoint #1 and returning to their second stop, Ai and Fujiki continue to the next stop somewhere in Bungle Bungle. Fujiki notes how it's a zero-sum game that they're playing and both note the feeling that they think they're being watched.

At the third checkpoint, they discover a hunting guide that allows them to learn how to make traps and snares (highly effective if mastered in order to catch animals for food). They also discover a book entitled 'Mars Labyrinth', which was an early version of a role-playing book.

It outlines a situation in which a man, sent to Mars to rescue a princess, is followed by ghosts. Later, on the way to checkpoint #4, Ai tells Fujiki of her life with drugs and why she was given a hearing aid.
5. Between the third and fourth checkpoints, Ai and Fujiki reunite with Funaoka and Seno. What do the two trade peaches and plums for?

Answer: A gas canister and a baton

As they continue, Ai and Fujiki sleep in the open and realize their error as they are soon pursued by wild animals. The next morning, the two meet up with Funaoka and Seno, who chose the self-defense items. They make a trade of peaches and plums for a gas canister and a baton (which the two feel will have no discernible use in the hands of Ai and Fujiki) and continue on their way.

At the fourth checkpoint, Ai and Fujiki learn of bad animals from Duckbilly Platy. They also learn of the wallaby and the snakes of the area (which are the deadliest in the world) before continuing once more to checkpoint #5. Along the way, a plane passes by, but the two are powerless and unable to signal it as the rules of the 'game' specify that they can't.
6. What is the name of the mouse that takes over the role of Duckbilly Platy?

Answer: Lucifer

As they move along, Fujiki is able to use a simple snare to catch food for himself and Ai. As well, he begins reading 'The Mars Labyrinth' and gathering a bit of info. For example, he discovers that there are numerous Bad Ends involving being caught by ghosts.

There are also a few Happy Ends, but there is only one True End. He also notes the similar situations that themselves and the role-player seem to be getting into. At checkpoint #5, a character named Lucifer kills the beloved Duckbilly Platy (who seemed to get more and more menacing as time went by) and they move on with knowledge of how to locate poisonous snakes with the Roman numeral for the number 5.

After they leave, they spot two men in the distance with bulging eyes. It turns out to be Naramoto and Tsurumi, who went for the food checkpoint (who they were warned against at the information checkpoint early on).

They also notice that Fumiko, the third traveller in their group, is missing. Soon, they discover her body in an underground oven, having been cooked and eaten.

When Fujiki discovers her Pocket Game Kids, it has Bad End on its screen. He destroys the object by throwing it at a rock.
7. What is considered the 'Magic Conch' from the book?

Answer: The receiver

After coming across 'the foodies' who have turned ravenous and cannibalistic, Fujiki and Ai realize what was meant by Duckbilly Platy when he said that 'There are two kinds of dangerous mammals in Bungle Bungle', one being snakes. Fujiki also determines that the magic conch that is found on the quest for the True End in the 'Mars Labyrinth' book is the receiver that require batteries (which could have been from Ai's or even Fumiko's Pocket Game Kids). Unfortunately, removing the batteries from the gaming devices wipes out the information on them.
At the sixth and seventh checkpoints they learn the deadly secret behind the trap foods. The FS in FS Biscuits stands for Fat Slicer, so the foodies have been losing weight all this time, and the beer has contained narcotics, causing them to become ravenous, hallucinating, hungry killing machines. They had become the ghosts of the Mars Labyrinth.
Fujiki takes the risk and uses the batteries to make the magic conch out of the receiver. He ends up getting a signal from a transponder and listens in on Naramoto and Funaoka's conversation. The two end up discovering Ai and Fujiki's third checkpoint asking them to replace the cartridge in their Pocket Game Kids and they decide to go after them.
8. Which participant is not eaten during the course of the book?

Answer: Norota

Ai and Fujiki come across Norota who managed to escape the foodies with a small injury. Kato, his partner, was unable to escape and was eaten by the two. Meanwhile, Seno's partner, Funaoka, decides to sabotage the man to benefit the foodies and they manage to ambush him.

They end up force-feeding Seno to Funaoka, but Fujiki discovers that they're only using him to store the meat inside himself. The group continues on, now with the wounded Norota keeping them lagging behind. When Norota lights a fire, Fujiki realizes that they might be discovered because of it, and they keep moving along.
9. Who does Ai realize is the Gamemaster?

Answer: Norota

Along their way, the three come across a cavernous path marked with a natural V shape. Fujiki notes that deadly snakes are inside. Along the way, Fujiki sets traps to protect themselves from the foodies, but when he discovers that they're down a natural corridor that runs parallel to their position, he is forced to scrap his idea. Fujiki risks breaking the rules and climbs up the canyon wall only to discover the foodies on the other side right beside them. Funaoka is eaten shortly after. Fujiki accidentally overhears a conversation between Ai and Norota about Norota being the 'Gamemaster'.

They figure that he clearly knew that making a fire would lead the foodies to their location. Norota denies this, and when a crossbow nearly hits them, they begin a mad dash in the opposite direction. Norota stays behind to try and make a deal with the others, but he is killed in the process, allowing the others to escape.
10. Fujiki survives his stay in the labyrinth.

Answer: True

Tsurumi attacks the two further along the route, but Fujiki is able to utilize his spear trap and is able to kill the man with the spear, the gas canister, and the baton that he and Ai acquired. The two head along and actually manage to escape Bungle Bungle and find an Aboriginal. However, the man is shot before he can save them. The two manage to race back to the labyrinth with Naramoto in hot pursuit. Fujiki discovers another snake cavern, this time containing the deadliest snake on the planet; the taipan. The two make their way in, somehow managing not to disturb the snakes, and Naramoto falls into the final trap, being bitten numerous times and poisoned beyond help. One, however, also bites Fujiki and he blacks out.

He wakes up in Japan and begins to determine what really happened, who was behind it, and what happened to Ai. He realizes that Norota was indeed the gamemaster, but Ai also played an important role. He notices her poor depth perception and the lack of sight on her left side and begins to assume that her eye wasn't real. It contained a camera used to view him the entire time. Ai actually stood for 'eye'. Her hearing aid was also important, as it was a transponder to send the feed to those in charge. In the end, Fujiki is left with many questions involving Ai and the Mars Labyrinth, but all he really has left is the game book, which states that he saves the princess and reunites with her. All he has left is to wait to find her, but until then, he knows that he has reached his True End.
