Writing About "Me" Trivia Quiz

Autobiographies are probably my favorite non-fiction genre. Sometimes they are "tell all" books. Sometimes they are straight accounts of the author's life. But they are almost always interesting reading. Enjoy this quiz!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What entertainer titled his autobiography "Yes I Can"?

Answer: Sammy Davis Jr.

"Yes I Can" was actually the first of three autobiographies written by the great Sammy Davis Jr. The second, "Why Me", was published shortly before his death and the third, "Sammy", was a condensed version of the first two with previously unreleased additional material.
2. What dancer-singer-actor co-authored an autobiography with his wife called "The Time of My Life"?

Answer: Patrick Swayze

Patrick and his wife Lisa Niemi Swayze each wrote separate chapters for the book, written while Patrick was battling cancer. The title, of course, comes from the hit song by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes which was used for Patrick's dance with Jennifer Grey at the end of the movie "Dirty Dancing".
3. Lucille Ball's first husband Desi Arnaz had just two words for the title of his autobiography. What was this simple title?

Answer: A Book

Written shortly after their divorce in 1960, Desi's enduring love for Lucy was obvious even when he shared some of the details of their often stormy marriage. Both married again, but the bond between Desi and Lucy was still strong albeit bittersweet.
4. What American humorist titled his autobiography "My Life and Hard Times"?

Answer: James Thurber

Thurber's book is a collection of essays about his life rather than a straight autobiography. Nonetheless, it makes for an enjoyable and funny read.
5. What female country singer's autobiography (later made into a movie) was called "Coal Miner's Daughter"?

Answer: Loretta Lynn

Loretta chose her title from an autobiographical hit song of hers. Sissy Spacek portrayed her in the movie, and also did her own singing. She won the Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of Loretta.
6. Willie Nelson's autobiography also included some anecdotes written by some of the people in his life. What is the title of Willie's self-penned life story?

Answer: Willie

"On The Road Again" was one of Willie's signature songs. "The Red Headed Stranger" was a concept album. And although Willie WILL always be a Texan, I just made that title up!
7. What was the title of the late Dick Clark's autobiography?

Answer: Rock, Roll and Remember

In "Rock, Roll and Remember", Dick Clark not only chronicles his life, but also shares lots of fun and interesting stories about the many artists and performers who crossed his path.
8. Much of this NASCAR driver's autobiography, titled "In The Blink of An Eye", is devoted to his relationship with the late Dale Earnhardt. Who is he?

Answer: Michael Waltrip

Michael Waltrip won the Daytona 500 race in which Dale Earnhardt was killed. His chronicle of that event is moving as he relates the irony of the excitement of winning the race only to have it tinged by Dale's tragic death.
9. This former network news anchor titled his autobiography "The Camera Never Blinks". Who is he?

Answer: Dan Rather

Dan Rather assumed the anchor spot on the "CBS Evening News" in 1981 when Walter Cronkite retired. The spot was temporarily filled by veteran newsman Bob Schieffer when Rather left CBS in 2005. Many believe Rather's leaving was a result of his airing a controversial news story on then-President Bush's military service.
10. The late Tammy Wynette titled her autobiography after one of her hit songs. What was it?

Answer: Stand By Your Man

All the possible answers were hit songs for Tammy, but "Stand By Your Man" was her signature song and was the obvious choice for the title. Tammy was portrayed by Annette O'Toole in the TV-movie based on the book.
