Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The actress who portrayed Stereotypical Barbie

Answer: Margot Robbie

Australian actress Margot Elise Robbie's career began in 2008 on the television show "Neighbours", playing the character Donna. Robbie's performance as Tonya Harding in the 2017 biopic "I, Tonya" earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress nomination. Margot Robbie, as producer of "Barbie" (2023), bought the rights for the film from Mattel in 2018 and hired Greta Gerwig to write and direct it.

Sterotypical Barbie is the main protagonist of the film. She begins her happy, generally carefree life residing in a Dream House in Barbie Land, but ventures to the Real World with Ken after enduring moments of existential crisis that lead to experiencing often disconcerting episodes of trying to cope with her humanity.
2. One actor that portrayed Barbie's boyfriend, Ken

Answer: Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling's acting career began at the age of 13, when he was an actor on Disney Channel's "The Mickey Mouse Club" from 1993-1995. Gosling has received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his roles in "Half Nelson" (2006) and "La La Land" (2016). In addition to starring as Ken, opposite Margot Robbie's Barbie, Ryan Gosling sang the song "I'm Just Ken" as well as a cover of Matchbox Twenty's "Push" for the soundtrack of "Barbie".

Ken's role in the movie seems to revolve around Barbie - as the narrator declares early in the film, "Ken only has a great day if Barbie looks at him". Other actors who played different Kens in "Barbie" include Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Scott Evans.
3. The CEO of Mattel in the Real World is played by this actor

Answer: Will Ferrell

Will Ferrell's experience as a comedic actor helped him to shine as the often panicky, over-the-top, eccentric fictional CEO of Mattel in "Barbie". Mattel's actual CEO at the time of the film's release in 2023, Ynon Kreiz, praised Will Ferrell's portrayal of the fictional CEO, saying in an interview with "Variety", "There are so many elements of humor and self-deprecation in the movie. And we embrace that. We take our brands very seriously. We take what we do very seriously.

But we don't take ourselves too seriously".
4. This actress provided the voice of the only unseen character in the movie

Answer: Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren won an Academy Award for Best Actress for playing Queen Elizabeth II in "The Queen" (2006). Though her "Barbie" character, the Narrator, is never seen, she provides running commentary throughout the film that is both thoughtful and humorous. One such memorable line the Narrator delivers, as Barbie tearfully frets that she isn't pretty anymore, is, "Note to the filmmakers: Margot Robbie is the wrong person to cast if you want to make this point".
5. This actress portrayed Weird Barbie, who was a 'normal' Barbie that suffered excessive use and misuse

Answer: Kate McKinnon

Weird Barbie represents real-life Barbie dolls that children lovingly deface and mar by drawing on them and otherwise disfiguring them. In the movie, her hair is unkempt and cut short, her face is scribbled on with multiple colors, her clothing is mismatched, and she is frequently stuck with her legs spread apart in the splits. Kate McKinnon plays Weird Barbie, keeping a positive outlook, accepting her appearance and existence with optimism, and assisting Stereotypical Barbie on her journey of self-discovery to the Real World.
6. Creator of Barbie portrayed by Rhea Perlman

Answer: Ruth Handler

Ruth Marianna Handler was a businesswoman and inventor who created the Barbie doll in 1959, and co-founded the toy manufacturing company Mattel with her husband Elliot. Rhea Perlman portrays Handler in her elder years in "Barbie", the actress's diminutive height reflecting Ruth Handler's short stature.

The character in the movie is a spirit entity that assists Stereotypical Barbie on her escapade.
7. America Ferrera portrayed this character, the only female employee shown working at Mattel in the Real World

Answer: Gloria

Gloria's experiences as Mattel's sole female employee enable her to help Barbie rise above the potential pitfalls of a patriarchal society that afflicts Barbie Land. Gloria's monologue on the impossibility of being a woman near the end of "Barbie" serves as one of the most forceful and uplifting moments in the movie.

As America Ferrera told "Vanity Fair", the movie's writer, Greta Gerwig, told Ferrera "I wrote this monologue for Gloria, and I've always imagined you saying this".
8. Teenager in the Real World who thinks Barbie is a 'fascist' who encourages unrealistic beauty standards to young girls and contributes to global warming

Answer: Sasha

Sasha is Gloria's daughter in "Barbie". Portrayed by Ariana Greenblatt, Sasha grows closer to her mother as the movie progresses and they help the Barbies in Barbie Land overcome the "Kendom" gender discrimination that infects the peace and harmony of its residents. Sasha is harsh to Stereotypical Barbie when they first meet, taking Barbie by surprise to be encountered by someone who doesn't immediately adore her. Sasha's evolution as a character in the movie, to be more understanding and accepting of her mother and the plight of Barbie, plays a crucial role in Stereotypical Barbie's own transformation.
9. As the film's narrator declares, there is "only one" of this character - Ken's buddy

Answer: Allan

Allan as a doll was created in 1964, introduced to be Ken's best friend. He is named after Barbie creator Ruth Handler's son-in-law. In "Barbie", Allan is portrayed by Michael Cera, and his character is sympathetic to all the issues and sufferings of the Barbies and Kens around him.
10. This character was a Mattel intern in the Real World

Answer: Aaron Dinkins

Connor Swindells portrays Mattel intern Aaron Dinkins in "Barbie". Aaron Dinkins is a minor, rarely seen character in the movie, who expresses the provocative, if not controversial, thought, "I'm a man with no power, does that make me a woman"?
