Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mermaids
Answer: Winona Ryder
This 1990 movie represented Christina Ricci's film debut, at a mere nine years of age. Along with Winona Ryder, she also got to work alongside Cher and that fine British actor Bob Hoskins. Set in 1963, the film follows a rather carefree single mother (Cher) who decides to move to Massachusetts with her neurotic teenage daughter (Ryder) and her her nine year daughter (Ricci). They have a number of weird and wonderful relationships which both test the family and bring them closer together.
Ryder would earn a Golden Globe nomination for her performance and Ricci would win the Young Artist Award.
2. Speed Racer
Answer: Emile Hirsch
"Speed Racer" was developed from the 1960s manga series of the same name. Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is an extremely talented eighteen year old racing driver. Racing appears to be in the blood of the entire family headed by Pops (John Goodman) and Mom Racer (Susan Sarandon), who run an independent business known as Racer Motors. They are joined in the operation by Speed's girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci). A large conglomeration offers Speed massive money to drive for them, but he rejects it. A rookie racer, Taejo Togokahn, entices Speed to join them for the Casa Cristo 5000 rally. Speed does, until he discovers that he is being used. Spurred on by the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox) Speed returns to race but faces what appear to be insurmountable odds when a $1 million bounty is placed on his head.
The film, directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, was released in 2008 and, whilst it garnered numerous Teen Choice Award nominations (including one for Christina Ricci), it was panned by the critics. It has, however, developed a strong cult following with many of its supporters complaining that it is a "misunderstood" film.
3. Casper
Answer: Bill Pullman
"Casper" is a 1995 supernatural dark comedy that was based on the Harvey Comics' character "Casper the Friendly Ghost". Christina is Kat. She and her therapist father (Bill Pullman) move into a run down old mansion with the task of getting rid of some evil ghosts and ends up befriending one. Christina also got the opportunity to work alongside Eric Idle and Amy Brenneman and, for her efforts, won the Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor.
4. Black Snake Moan
Answer: Samuel L. Jackson
This 2006 black comedy sees Christina Ricci delving into more adult roles. In this film she plays a sex addict who cheats on her boyfriend (Justin Timberlake) while he is deployed with the Tennessee National Guard. After rejecting the advances of a friend she is savagely beaten and left for dead on the side of a road. She is rescued by a farmer and blues guitarist (Samuel L. Jackson) who nurses her back to health and then endeavours to "cure" her of her sinful ways.
Ricci's performance was well received by critics and she went to the extreme of losing several pounds in weight in an effort to attain an "unhealthy" look for her character.
5. That Darn Cat
Answer: Doug E. Doug
This 1996 film is a remake of a Disney film from 1965 with the latter being a hit thanks to its list of stars, which included Hayley Mills and Roddy McDowall. Ricci (as Patti Randall) takes on the Hayley Mills role of a bored teenager looking for some excitement. Little does she know that excitement is about to arrive on her doorstep. A local maid has been kidnapped by a couple of bumbling crooks (Ma and Pa, played by Rebecca Schull and Peter Boyle), who'd mistaken her (the maid) for the wife of a wealthy businessman. D.C, which is short for Darn Cat, is an alley cat who stumbles upon the criminal's lair. The maid manages to scratch a message onto her watch and attaches around the cat's neck. When Patti discovers the cat, the watch and the message, she puts two and two together and starts playing amateur detective. To this end she is assisted by FBI agent Zeke Kelso, played by Doug E. Doug, an actor best known for his role as Sanka Coffie in "Cool Runnings" (1993).
The film was poorly received however, Ricci's performance did catch the eye and she ended up being nominated for a variety of awards.
6. The Opposite of Sex
Answer: Lisa Kudrow
This 1996 comedy drama sees a pregnant sixteen year old, Deedee Truitt played by Christina Ricci, run away from home to live with her gay half-brother Bill, played by Martin Donovan. Deedee then creates havoc in Bill's life, first by seducing his partner Matt (Ivan Sergei) and deceiving him into believing that he has impregnated her. Then she throws another spanner into the works by eloping with Matt. Bill tracks down Deedee with the help of Lucia (Lisa Kudrow), the sister of Bill's former lover, Tom, who'd passed away, but Bill still mourns. Yes, there is a lot going on here and I won't spoil it for you except to say that Deedee has also stolen Tom's ashes and holds them to ransom.
Ricci showed her maturity as an actor in this role and gathered praise from most critics and wound up with a nomination for Best Actress at the Golden Globe Awards.
7. Monster
Answer: Charlize Theron
This American crime drama was listed as one of the ten best films of 2003 by the American Film Institute. It is based on the story of Aileen Wuornos (Charlize Theron), a Daytona Beach prostitute, who turns serial killer, savagely murdering and robbing several of her clients. Christina Ricci plays Selby Wall, Aileen's lover.
This is Theron's tour-de-force. She would win awards for Best Actress in numerous ceremonies including the Academy Awards. Film critic Roger Ebert would refer to her performance as "one of the greatest performances in the history of the cinema". Christina, for her part, would receive a nomination for Best Supporting Actress by the Las Vegas Film Critics Society Awards and Best Kiss at the MTV Awards.
8. The Hard Way
Answer: Michael J. Fox
John Badham directs this 1991 buddy cop action comedy. He teams up Michael J. Fox's Nick Lang, an action movie star looking for a serious role, with James Woods' Lt. John Moss, a hard-bitten detective on the hunt for a serial killer. As expected, Moss wants little to do with the partnership and is constantly looking for ways to rid himself of the spoiled actor. Moss is also trying to woo a single mother, Susan played by Annabella Sciorra, but is struggling to communicate with her. Lang seeks to give him advice but things go from bad to worse when Lang becomes a hit with Bonnie (Christina Ricci), Susan's daughter, who despises Moss. To tell you any more would be a massive spoiler.
The film was met with mixed success with the critics but was a box office winner for the studio.
9. Sleepy Hollow
Answer: Johnny Depp
"Sleepy Hollow" is Tim Burton's gothic supernatural horror film that introduces us to Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane. It is 1799 and Crane, who's regularly criticized for his desire to use scientific methods to solve crimes, is sent to the hamlet of Sleepy Hollow to investigate the murder of three citizens, all of whom have been gruesomely beheaded. The rumours that have circulated through the small settlement are that the deaths are the work of the legendary Headless Horseman. Christina Ricci is Katrina Van Tassel, heir to the estate of one of the area's richest farmers who becomes Ichabod's love interest.
The film received, generally, positive reviews and generated high praise for its visuals and Depp's performance as Ichabod. It would win an Oscar for Art Direction and Ricci would secure the Saturn Award as Best Actress from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films.
10. Addams Family
Answer: Christopher Lloyd
Despite a troubled production "The Addams Family" (1991) would become a commercial success and receive solid reviews. Ricci, who plays Wednesday Addams in this film, got to work with the likes of Raul Julia (Gomez Addams), the delightful Anjelica Huston (Morticia Addams) who would receive a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress, and Christopher Lloyd in the dual roles of Uncle Fester and Gordon Craven.
The film sees Gomez with regrets about a feud he'd had with his brother (Fester) some twenty years prior and not seeing him since. His lawyer, who owes a great deal of money to a loan shark, sees an opportunity here to get his hands on the Addams family fortune by trying to install the loan shark's son, who has a striking resemblance to Fester, into the family. Part of the joy in this film is the witty dialogue and there is none better than the exchange between a girl scout (Mercedes McNab) and Ricci's Wednesday.
"Girl Scout: Is this made from real lemons?
Wednesday: Yes.
Girl Scout: I only like all-natural foods and beverages, organically grown, with no preservatives. Are you sure they're real lemons?
Pugsley: Yes.
Girl Scout: Well, I'll tell you what. I'll buy a cup if you buy a box of my delicious Girl Scout cookies. Do we have a deal?
Wednesday: Are they made from real Girl Scouts?"
