10 Average Questions about Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

Even though it was in Japanese (which I don't happen to speak) I still found "Advent Children" to be really entertaining and very well made. Feel free to test your knowledge of it with my wee quiz here and, of course, have some fun (spoilers warning).

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who do we first see in the film?

Answer: Red XIII

We see Red XIII and his two cubs bounce up the side of a cliff and roar over Midgar. I thought it was a really good way to link the film to the game, since the first scene of the film is the last scene of the game. It just sort of picks up from where it left off (minus 498 years, of course). Red XIII does not have a particularly big part in the film, other than fights, but I'm glad he is in it, since he has always been a favourite character of mine.
2. Which of the following names does not apply to the gang that attacks Cloud on motorbikes at the beginning of the film?

Answer: Kazal

Kadaj is the clear leader of the gang, with Yazoo (Long-haired) and Loz (Short-haired) following in joint second-in-command. They attack Cloud just outside of Midgar, refering to him as "Brother". It doesn't require a lengthy look to realise they have a clear link with Sephiroth - not with all that silver hair.

Their mission in the film is to obtain Jenova's cell (Jenova being an ancient and evil entity from "Final Fantasy VII" that is never witnessed in true form in the film) and bring about the "Reunion".

This will bring about the return of Sephiroth. For those who are not familiar with the game, Sephiroth is the all-powerful villain of "Final Fantasy VII" and Cloud's rival, since he killed Cloud's family and burned down his home town.
3. Which part of Jenova are Kadaj and his gang searching for?

Answer: Neck

"It seems like they have obtained Jenova's neck." Vincent tells this to Cloud after pulling him him out of a fight with Kadaj, near the Forgotten Capital. Vincent has a surprisingly talkative role for such a reserved character, and provides Cloud with a lot of information regarding Kadaj and his gang. Jenova is the "Mother" that Kadaj often refers to in the film.

He knows that by recovering Jenova's cell, he can somehow bring about the rebirth of Sephiroth, although he is not even sure who Sephiroth is.

He can merely "feel it", as he explains to Rufus.
4. Zack has some lines in this film.

Answer: True

Zach appears in the flashback that Cloud has as he stands before the original Buster Sword. "You want to be a soldier? Good luck". Cloud also sees him in the church at the end of the film, as he walks away with Aeris, his girlfriend (as mentioned in the game but not in the film). Zach was Cloud's best friend and was killed before reaching Midgar, several years before the setting of the film. Unsurprisingly, he doesn't contirbute much to the plot but, again, I'm glad they put him in the film as well.
5. What is the name of the syndrome that is plaguing the world during the film?

Answer: Geostigma

The first named character we see to suffer from the disease is Denzel, Marlene's friend. No background information on Denzel is given but Marlene is Barret's adopted daughter from his home town of Corel. The disease itself is caused by Jenova's "genetic thoughts" within the lifestream. According to Vincent, it brings about an excessive functioning of the system that eliminates "foreign substances" from the body. Overall, it doesn't sound like it's a barrel of laughs anyway.
6. Sephiroth's last words in the film are: "I will not become a mere _____"

Answer: Memory

As Kadaj finally receives his "share" of Jenova's cells, he transforms into the all-feared Sephiroth. After a lengthy battle with Cloud, Sephiroth is finally defeated again and says his last words, before being enfolded in a single black wing. He says this in reply to Cloud, who says "Please stay quietly in my memories", after Cloud slashes him repeatedly.
7. Cloud is shot twice in this film.

Answer: True

Cloud is shot by Yazoo in the first attack outside Midgar, when Yazoo's bike flips over Cloud's. Yazoo shoots at his face and knocks Cloud's goggles from him (they must be pretty strong goggles). Then, of course, he is shot more memorably at the end of the film, again by Yazoo, as he and Loz begin to fade away.

This bullet, however, is clearly seen to go straight through Cloud's chest. Cloud then attacks Yazoo and Loz, causing a massive explosion.
8. At one point in the film Kadaj summons a giant monster that destroys a large proportion of the city. This would be called back only when he obtained Jenova's neck. Who was the first to attack this monster?

Answer: Barret

When Denzel runs (quite stupidly) at the monster, Barret's metal hand holds him back. Barret is one of the earliest characters of the "Final Fantasy VII" game and leader of a group named Avalanche, opposed to Shinra.inc. His hand then converts into a revolving machine gun (more typical of his appearance in the game) and he drives the giant away, although temporarily.

It's not long before everyone is attacking the beast, diving from ruined buildings.
9. Which of the following limit breaks is NOT used in this film?

Answer: Final Heaven

Red XIII uses Sled Fang against the summoned monster, becoming the first character to knock it to the ground. Cloud uses Braver against the summoned monster, as he flips, raises his sword above his head and strikes down on it. As he does so, blue light can be seen to surround the blade of his sword. By using this manoeuvre he becomes the second character to knock the beast to the ground (although from a greater height than Red XIII). Cloud also uses Finishing Touch to end his last fight with Kadaj, as the blade is seen to glow in a kind of blue flame and he blows away Kadaj without actually hitting him. Final Heaven is never used in the film.
10. Which former member of Shinra leaves a message on Cloud's mobile phone?

Answer: Reeve

When Cloud's phone is seen to sink to the bottom of a natural well, near the Forgotten Capital, we hear many messages left on it. Amongst the senders is Reeve. He is asking Cloud if he can really make a business out of deliveries and offers his help with it.

He also says that it sounds like something Cloud would do. Reeve is the member of Shinra that operates the controls of Cait Sith in the "Final Fantasy VII" game, spying on Cloud and his friends.
