Directed by Nicholas Hytner, and released at the end of 1994, "The Madness of King George" was adapted by Alan Bennett from his own 1991 play, "The Madness of George III". As the title implies, the film shows the gradual decline of the English king's mental health, mainly focusing on the period between 1788 and 1789, when George III's relationship with his eldest son and heir (the future George IV) was also deteriorating. The film - whose cast included, besides Nigel Hawthorne in the title role, Helen Mirren, Ian Holm and Rupert Everett - was both a critical and a commercial success. Though the film won only one of the four Academy Awards for which it had been nominated (Best Art Direction), it won BAFTA's Best British Film award, and Hawthorne won as Best Actor in a Leading Role. Helen Mirren won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of George III's queen, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The remaining English kings have all been featured in various films.
