Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This menacing, snake-eyed meanie played Angel Eyes, Reese, Jack Colby, and Alfonso Parral. When he went out for spaghetti, he always insisted on going dutch. Who is this actor?

Answer: Lee Van Cleef

Some of his villainous movies are "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", "High Noon" and "The Bravados". His very first film was "High Noon" (1952). He was of Dutch ancestry and his career was interrupted by a serious car accident in 1958. His career was revived in 1965 when he became a major star in Spaghetti Westerns.
2. This no good, low down, Yankee liar put on black leather gloves just before he did his cold-blooded killings. What snake is this?

Answer: Jack Palance

He was born Volodymyr Palahniuk of Ukrainian parents. In his youth, he worked in the coal mines of Pennsylvania and became a good professional boxer. Palance was nominated for an Oscar (his second) as gunman Jack Wilson in "Shane" and finally won one as Curly Washburn by parodying himself in "City Slickers" (1991).

He wrote a song about himself titled "The Meanest Man That Ever Lived".
3. This toothless menacer was disturbing with or without his dentures. He played Judge Roy Bean, Colonel Jeb Hawkins, and Old Man Clanton. Who is this cantankerous codger?

Answer: Walter Brennan

This three-time Oscar winner was as versatile as any actor ever. His early loss of teeth and hair made him always looking old. He could act lovable or despicable at the same time. Some of his Westerns are "The Westerner", "How the West Was Won", and "My Darling Clementine".
4. This toughie played Hector David, Tim Strawn, and Liberty Valance. Who is this tall, gray, vicious ex-Marine?

Answer: Lee Marvin

Lee Marvin was named for his distant relative, Robert E. Lee. He won an Oscar for his portrayal of twins in "Cat Ballou". Other of his films are "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" and "Bad Day At Black Rock".
5. This baddie was a real heavyweight, playing roles as Coley Trimble, Dutch Engstom, and Donnegan. He ate lots of Italian food. Who is he?

Answer: Ernest Borgnine

Ironically, he won an Oscar as a gentle nice guy in the film "Marty". He was a Navy veteran of WWII who had a hit series with "McHale's Navy". His Westerns include "Bad Day At Black Rock", "The Wild Bunch", and "Vera Cruz". He is of Italian extract.
6. This ugly monster played Cicero Grimes, John Fain, Frank Usher, and Mike Sweeney. He was an evil hombre who riled Jake. What is the actor's name?

Answer: Richard Boone

This actor is related to frontiersman Daniel Boone and singer Pat Boone. Once he got on TV, he became a good guy as Paladin in "Have Gun, Will Travel". Some of his movies are "Hombre", "Big Jake", "The Tall T", and "The Shootist".
7. This sneaky, oily, venomous critter played Tuco the Ugly, Calvera, and Charlie Gant (all bandits). His baby doll is actress Anne Jackson. Need I say more? Who is this buckaroo?

Answer: Eli Wallach

This outstanding actor was given an honorary Oscar but probably should have won one for his role in "Baby Doll". His married Anne Jackson in 1948. "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", "The Magnificent Seven", and "How the West Was Won" are some of his films. He is of Polish-Jewish ancestry.
8. This pitiless, buck-toothed monstrosity has been known as Asa Watts the Long Hair. That role alone has made him famously notorious as the back-shooting murderer of cowboy Wil Andersen (John Wayne). Who done this dastardly deed?

Answer: Bruce Dern

In the movie "The Cowboys" (1972), Long Hair's cowardly act of shooting the Duke, in the back, has earned him the hatred of the general public for generations to come. His treachery may be worse than that of the coward who shot Frank Howard. Dern's reply to the public indignation is "Yeah, but they'll love me in Berkeley.".
9. This evil-eyed, mean-looking, bad-tempered rogue might just be the most recognizable villain ever. He has played Tevis, Horse Face, and Tex. He turned down the role of Jack Wilson in "Shane" which was then taken by Jack Palance. Who is this classic villain?

Answer: Jack Elam

On a personal note, Jack Elam was a family friend. He was born in Miami, Arizona, the same place I was born. He and my Uncle Earl grew up as childhood friends. They were always hanging out together and Jack would get into fights with other boys because of his mouth.

A fight would start and my uncle, who was good with his dukes, had to get Jack out of trouble. Contrary to the printed stories, Jack did not lose sight of his left eye because of a childhood fight or at a boy scout meeting. For the first time in print I am telling the true story. Jack and Earl were sitting next to each other, as always, in a school class. Jack pulled hard on the ponytail of a girl seated in front of him. Startled, the girl swung around to face Jack and acidentally stabbed him in his left eye with the pencil she was holding. That's the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. No names have been changed to protect the guilty. Ironically, because of this injury, Jack made his fortune.

Some of his Westerns are "Rawhide", "The Comancheros", and "Vera Cruz".
10. This cold, calculating carnivore has done parts as John Herod and Little Bill Daggett. He needed only two Westerns under his belt to become one of the greatest villains ever. Can you get his shorty name right or do you need some spinach to make you strong?

Answer: Gene Hackman

This double Oscar winner got one for the film "Unforgiven" as a tough-as-nails, small-town marshal. He also starred in "The Quick and the Dead". The other Oscar was for Popeye Doyle in "The French Connection". "Get Shorty" is another of his films.
