1. (1967) Mark Thackeray only took a teaching position until he could find a job as an engineer. He soon realized that what his rowdy, undisciplined class, in London's east end, really needed were lessons in respect, and how to get by in the real world. By the time graduation rolled around, his class adored him, and he had an offer of an engineering position. He tore it up though, because he realized that he'd found his true calling in life.
2. (1963) Annie Hayworth (played by Suzanne Pleshette) was the school teacher in the one room schoolhouse in Bodega Bay, when socialite Melanie Daniels brought that pair of love birds to town. No one really knows if the love birds were the trigger, but after they came the local birds started getting very aggressive. In fact poor Annie was one of the poeple who was killed by them.
3. (1993) Chuck Norstadt wants nothing more than to escape to military school, leaving his sisters and mother behind. When he fails the entrance exam, he enlists the help of McLeod, a disgraced teacher who was badly burned in a car accident, in which one of his students had been killed. Under McLeod's tutelage Nick passes the entrance exam, but also learns some valuable lessons about life and trust.
4. (2001) Paragons of the community, she teaches choir at the local high school, and he is the town doctor. But when their only son becomes involved with an older woman, and is killed by her ex-husband, they are not willing to sit back and let the killer get away with it. He's the one who actually kills his son's murderer, but she certainly pushes him into it - although neither of them seem to derive a great deal of satisfaction from their act of vengeance.
5. (2003) She was the town school teacher, until they killed the man she loved because their skin wasn't the same colour. Then she became 'Kissin' Kate Barlow', an outlaw whose trademark was to leave a lipstick print on her victims. Years later, delinquent boys sentenced to 'Camp Green Lake' spent their days digging holes, looking for her legendary, buried treasure.
6. (1989) John Keating is a remarkable English teacher at an all boys' boarding school. He inspires his students to think outside of the box and live for the day, infusing them with confidence, a belief in self, and a joy for learning (especially for the under-appreciated art of poetry). Carpe diem!
7. (1969) Maggie Smith gives an incredible performance as a teacher at an all girls' boarding school in Edinburgh, just before the Second World War. Honestly believing that she is providing the best possible education for her charges, she ignores the subjects she believes worthless, and teaches her girls about the 'ways of life', focusing her energies on politics, art and especially love. However her own behaviour in that regard soon lands her in trouble with the school's administrators.
8. (1985) When five very different students are forced to spend a Saturday in an all day detention, they are supervised by Principal Richard Vernon. His entire purpose in the film is to appear as a blustering, ridiculous, authority figure that the students can use as a rallying point. United in their dislike of him, they can begin to get past their differences and learn a lesson about stereo-typing. They even have a scene of him emerging hurriedly from the bathroom with toilet paper in tow.
9. (1995) Glen was a musician who really wanted to compose music. He only took a job as a high school music teacher for a couple of years, to help pay the bills while he composed the music that would make him famous. But life got in the way, and years later he realized that teaching music was his real passion, when he found himself fighting tooth and nail to keep the music program alive.
10. (1988) Someone has murdered college professor Dexter Cornell, and he has only 48 hours to find out who, before he succumbs to the poison he has been given. In fact someone seems to have murdered a few of the people in his immediate circle, and it all seems to be connected with the novel that his now dead student (one of the murder victims) had submitted for marking.
