Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The character of Edward Abramovich is played by a man of the same first name. What is his last name?

Answer: Norton

An excellent actor; the two-time Academy Award-nominated, Golden Globe-winning Edward Norton plays the titular role of "The Illusionist". Norton's character is that of the quiet and cunning master illusionist, Edward Abramovich, a.k.a. Eisenheim the Illusionist.

His other roles include "Fight Club", "Primal Fear", and "American History X". Aaron Johnson plays the younger version of Edward.
2. What does Edward choose for his stage name upon returning from his travels?

Answer: Eisenheim

Edward has become Eisenheim, a master illusionist. He starts a show that becomes so popular, it attracts royalty with its amazing feats of magic. Through the show he is reintroduced to his childhood love, Sophie, who is now the Duchess von Teschen (played by Jessica Biel).
3. When Edward and Sophie were children, Edward gave her a gift that she cherished ever after. What was it?

Answer: A locket

The locket, appearing to be a simple oval shape, twists open into the shape of a heart. Afterwards, the heart can be opened to reveal a picture of young Edward.
4. After seeing Eisenheim's first performance, Chief Inspector Uhl (played by Paul Giamatti) is puzzling over how the tricks were performed. He remarks later to Eisenheim that he has seen similar tricks before, but never in such detail. Which one is he alluding to?

Answer: The Orange Tree

After first showing an empty pot, it suddenly becomes filled with dirt. An orange tree begins to grow from the dirt at a remarkable rate, and afterwards Eisenheim tosses some of the oranges to the audience to prove that they're real.
5. During the private show at the palace, Leopold requests that Eisenheim perform his next trick without any of his own props. Eisenheim obliges and creates a trick seemingly on the spot based off of a popular legend. What legend is it?

Answer: The Sword in the Stone

Prince Leopold (played by Rufus Sewell), impressed by Eisenheim's show, invites him to the palace for a private performance. After performing a trick whereupon Leopold's father Emperor Franz Joseph the First is depicted in a detailed sketch, Leopold attempts to analyze the trick and reveal its secret.

When the audience pleads with Leopold to let the show go on, he cedes the point but asks that Eisenheim refrain from using any of his "gadgetry". Eisenheim borrows Leopold's decorative sword and stands it straight up on its tip (apparently balancing of its own volition).

He asks a few men in succession to try and pull the sword "from the stone" but none are successful. Finally, Leopold tries to claim his sword and at first is unable to (earning jeers from the audience); Eisenheim is purposefully embarrassing him in front of his guests.

After locking eyes for a tense moment, Eisenheim allows Leopold to retrieve the sword. Leopold angrily ends the show afterwards.
6. To Eisenheim's displeasure he finds out that Sophie will most likely be married to Prince Leopold, in order to gain influence in Hungary. Eisenheim also learns that he has had a history of spousal abuse. How did Leopold's first wife allegedly die?

Answer: Leopold pushed her out a window

The rumor of the mysterious circumstances surrounding her death are wide-spread throughout the kingdom, although they were never proven.
7. After discovering the body of Sophie, who appears to have died of a stab wound, the coroner transporting her body gives what he believes is evidence to Chief Inspector Uhl. What is it?

Answer: A small gemstone

The gemstone suspiciously looks like one from Prince Leopold's sword...the plot thickens! Uhl later finds another gem in the stables at Leopold's hunting lodge.
8. When Uhl informs Leopold that he has already advised his father, the Emperor, of Sophie's murder and his plot to stage a coup d'etat, Leopold points a gun at Uhl. Meanwhile, soldiers of the Emperor are banging on the doors asking Leopold to come out. What occurs next?

Answer: Leopold turns the gun on himself and commits suicide

After Uhl has finished recounting the story of Eisenheim to Leopold (thus ending a very long flashback), he confronts Leopold with the evidence against him. Leopold says that none of it is true, that Uhl has been deceived. When Leopold realizes that Uhl will not cover for him, it appears that Leopold will shoot Uhl for his betrayal, but when he hears the knocking of the soldiers on the doors, he resigns to his fate and shoots himself in the head.
9. While looking at the pages of the Orange Tree, a man bumps into Chief Inspector Uhl and picks his pocket. What does he take?

Answer: The locket

After leaving the Prince's lodge, Uhl is confronted by a boy who asks if he is the Chief Inspector. After replying in the affirmative, the boy hands him the folder containing the blueprints for the Orange Tree. Uhl asks the boy where he got it, and the boy replies "Herr Eisenheim!" It turns out the man who bumped into Uhl was Eisenheim in disguise, getting back what is his! Uhl tries to chase after him, but Eisenheim departs on a train before he can catch up to him.
10. At the very end of the movie we find out that Eisenheim and Sophie staged her death in order to escape from Leopold.

Answer: True

After Eisenheim escapes Uhl on the train, the Chief inspector has an epiphany of sorts. We are then taken through a montage of Eisenheim and Sophie planning their escape from Leopold; pocketing two gems from the sword in order to plant later, drugging Leopold's drink so that he doesn't remember what he did the night of Sophie's "murder", and giving Sophie a special medicine that causes her to appear dead among other things. An astute viewer may have also noticed a bottle of fake blood in Eisenheim's house when Uhl is searching it for clues.

In the end, Sophie and Edward live happily ever after in a small cottage in scenic surroundings. Although they did kind of frame a man for murder.
