quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Known for several other popular courtroom dramas in his film career, including '12 Angry Men', what distinguished director was responsible for the creation of 'The Verdict'?

Answer: Sidney Lumet

Some of Sidney Lumet's other great films include 'The Pawnbroker', 'Serpico', 'Murder on the Orient Express', 'Dog Day Afternoon', 'Network' and 'Deathtrap'. Wow, what a résumé!
2. As the film opens, we see down-and-out lawyer Frank Galvin really struggling to hold on. Who provides a marvelous performance as Galvin, a drunken, ambulance-chasing wreck?

Answer: Paul Newman

Paul Newman gives a performance that received both Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor. Newman seems so genuine in his role as Frank Galvin, he practically inhabits the character. However, Newman was going up against some tough competition at that year's Academy Awards. Ben Kingsley won for 'Gandhi', and Dustin Hoffman, 'Tootsie', Jack Lemmon 'Missing' and Peter O'Toole 'My Favorite Year' were all also nominated!
3. It seems like Frank Galvin has only one friend, an aging lawyer friend played by Jack Warden, who provides Galvin with a very intriguing case. What is the first name of Galvin's pal, surnamed Morrissey?

Answer: Mickey

Mickey Morrissey is a bit rough around the edges, but he has Frank Galvin's best interests at heart. When Frank decides to take the case to court, rather than settle out-of-court, Morrissey decides to help his friend out. Incidentally, Jack Warden also appeared in Lumet's very first feature film, namely '12 Angry Men'.
4. The case that Frank Galvin takes involves a situation where medical malpractice may have occurred. What is the name of the plaintiff, a woman who has been in a coma since entering the prestigious St. Catherine Laboure Hospital in Boston?

Answer: Deborah Ann Kaye

The doctors on the case, namely Dr. Towler and Dr. Marx, have been accused of malpractice. After anesthesia was performed on Ms. Kaye, she had a strong reaction and threw up in the mask. Her heart stopped beating and it took the doctors about nine minutes to revive her.
5. Things are looking up for Galvin, he is handling an important new case and he has also recently met a beautiful young woman. What actress plays Galvin's new ladyfriend, Laura Fischer?

Answer: Charlotte Rampling

This is a tough role for Rampling, as she plays a Judas in the film. It turns out that she is working for the lawyers who are representing the defendants in the case.

Some of English actress Charlotte Rampling's other films include 'Orca' and 'Mascara'.
6. Defending the doctors and the Catholic hospital against Galvin's plaintiff is a very powerful local law firm. Played by James Mason, who is the chief lawyer for the opposing team?

Answer: Ed Concannon

You may recognize James Mason from his various other film roles, including 'North by Northwest', 'Lolita' and 'Georgy Girl'. He was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for 'The Verdict'.
7. Before the case goes to trial, Galvin's client is offered a fairly substantial amount of money not to take the case to court. How much money is offered as a settlement for his client?

Answer: $210,000

The amount chosen is thus that, if Galvin were to accept, he would make off with $70,000. His fee is a third of whatever settlement can be agreed upon. However, after having taken pictures of the victim, and having considered the fact that the doctors would be getting away essentially scot-free, he cannot accept the $210,000. He insists on taking it to court.
8. Just when things seem to be going well for Galvin, his star witness, another doctor at the Catholic hospital, suddenly leaves for a vacation just as the case is about to hit the courts. What is this doctor's name?

Answer: Gruber

Dr. Gruber has agreed to testify that the other doctors in question, namely Towler and Marx, were negligent in the case. He seems to feel that they no longer deserve to work at the hospital, and holds a great deal of resentment against them. Later, it turns out that he was simply working for the other side, and is now enjoying a nice vacation in the Caribbean.
9. Just when things seem to be very bleak for Galvin and his client, he is able to locate a star witness, Kaitlin Costello, the admitting nurse at the hospital on the evening that his client was treated. In what city does he find Costello working?

Answer: New York City

Kaitlin Costello is now working for a children's school. She agrees to come testify at the trial, and admits to having doctored the patient's admission slip at the request of Dr. Towler. It seems that the patient had eaten a full meal only one hour prior to being admitted, and later, when she had an emergency reaction to anesthesia, Dr. Towler forced Kaitlin to change the one to a nine.
10. Despite the fact that Kaitlin Costello's testimony is deemed inadmissable by the very biased judge during the case, does Galvin's client win?

Answer: Yes

Not only does she win, but the jury decides to reward the plaintiff with a larger amount than that which they were recommended (we never hear the exact amount). It seems that the jury was swayed by the testimony of Kaitlin Costello, despite the fact that it was supposed to be stricken from the court record.
